The Decline of Poker for a Quick Fix Started by: Ascanius on Mar 29, '14 11:35

Poker was all the rage for a period. Crewleaders and gangsters alike would join and play. The availability of tables for us to play at was great. It was the perfect way for us to kill time, drink, and even talk to others. But now if you try to go to those same tables, you’ll find them empty?!?! Why would such a popular venue suddenly empty out?

Well, poker is quite time consuming. Hours can be spent winning, losing, and breaking even. But there was something nice about being able to sit around talking with everyone, and of course trying to figure out who Phantogram was… However, something like dice has a quick turnaround. Toss ‘em, and you win or lose. Very simple. In and out… In and out.

But there’s still something to poker that I think we’re missing. I think it’d be in our interest to try to utilize the tables before they get too dusty. Perhaps we can discuss a proper time on Sunday night to have a nice social game? I know people have expressed interest in creating a regularly scheduled tournament. This would be a good start.

I also believe that the removal and running out of town of all previous underground poker set ups has lead to it's decline. Before one of the motivations for getting on your own poker table was to generate a little extra (that you've probably lost grinding chips) through the rake. However since there are no owners of any of the current poker tables, people have no additional motivation to get on the tables and start actives games if there isn't already one moving.

I think this would be great! I loved playing on the tables with people, but now days you can go sit alone for hours and no one wants to come play.

I would even be willing to throw in 5 credits a week for the winner of a tournament.

That's why I think perhaps a friendly scheduled game might be a good way to bring people together at the tables since the old way of casino owners drawing people in isn't really in play these days.

I would love to see people playing again. Any tournaments would also be a great idea. I don't remember the golden age of poker, but would love to see the tables return to glory.
