Waking Up Started by: Anna on Apr 27, '14 23:50

A yawn and a stretch and a quiet sigh. A head slumping back on the pillows, looking up at the ceiling, almost as though waiting for it to part so she could see the clouds in the sky, and watch the birds fly overhead. Or, in other words, a fancy way of trying to pretend she wasn't fighting off the urge to take another five minutes rest. But no. Today was the day, Anna knew.

Taking a deep breath, she pulled the covers back and jumped out of bed, muttering obscenities about the cold as she stomped into the bathroom and flicked on the shower, brushing her teeth as she waited for the hot water to run through. Finally, she pulled off her pajamas and jumped in, allowing the hot water to run over her face and wash the sleepiness away. She could do it, it wasn't a question of that.

She'd been a little out of the mob world, out of the loop, so to say, of late. A few reasons for that. Other worlds had drawn her in and she'd allowed herself to be taken, found herself finding less and less reasons to stick around this world. A few words with the boss man the night before had seen her right for that.

Jumping out the shower, she dried off and planned her outfit for the day - a great believer in a good outfit being a perfect morale booster. Looking in her wardrobe, she decided on slim cut black trousers and a crisp white blouse, well ironed and looking smart. Perfect for making herself look somewhat innocuous in the crowds of people heading to their office jobs in the centre of town.

Slipping out the front door, she felt the drizzle in the air and put the hood of her long black raincoat up. She stopped in at her favorite coffee shop and ordered herself a latte to go, stopped in at the convenience store - too close to home to steal from - and bought herself a copy of the New York Times. All the better to blend in with.

Walking the streets into town, she began to slip into her regular hunting mode - she intended to steal some purses to start her day and get herself back into the swing of things. Slipping around corners and in and out of doorways, her eyes scanned every corner of the streets, looking for the kind of victim with enough change in their pocket for her to get herself a good breakfast and kick some cash up to the boss. Spotting a man in a sharp, expensive looking Italian cut suit, she crossed over the road and walked behind him a way, checking his movements. As he stopped further up the road to watch a busker play away at his guitar, a smile crossed Anna's face - the kind of smile a cat gives when it's prey has left themselves exposed and vulnerable. She made her way over to where the busker played and the man stood watching, and when half a step behind, made as though she'd gone over on her ankle in her heels. Exclaiming "Oh!" as though in pain and putting her hand on the mans side as though to steady herself, in the movement of straightening up she lightly dipped her hand into his coat pocket and came out with the prize, a bulging wallet, which she quickly slid into her large handbag. In the same smooth movement, she moved her hand up to the mans shoulder and muttered her apologies, praising the musician before quickly setting about on her way. Knowing that the man would soon put his hand to his pocket and wonder where his wallet was gone, she set about her usually escape route from any given area - taking as many twists and turns as she could, knowing that the best way to lose any possible chaser was not by putting in sheer distance, but by turning corners.

As she reached the small diner she preferred to use for such celebratory breakfasts, she took her usual seat with her back to the counter and flipped out the wallet, taking out the money she'd need for breakfast and putting the rest in an envelope in her bag for her boss, before putting the wallet back in her bag with a mental note to sell it on later, it being made of a nice leather and having no personalized markings. As the old man who owned the cafe smiled in recognition of her and began preparing her usual, Anna felt a smile cross her face.

'Just like riding a bike', she thought of the mornings work. Perhaps rejoining this world would be easier than she had anticipated.
