| Approaching A Leader | Started by: ApolloJustice on Jun 04, '09 16:51 |

He slicks back his hair, straightens his tie, and sets his briefcase next to the soap box before taking his moment to stand upon it. It seems every day I am approached by new faces. Folks without any family history in this business. And this fact alone actually makes me very happy. It is a good thing to see so many turning their back from the petty lives of the common civilian and joining the illustrious ranks of organized crime. So what brings me here today? I come to talk about something many regard as common sense, but something I feel needs to be said. A teaching of the proper ways to approach a leader of this world. Now to those of you whom feel you are seasoned in the subject feel free to add in anything, but those who are not listen. A majority of this issue comes in the form of family invitation requests. This is every mafioso's first step in our world- and first impressions are often the most important. How To Request an Invitation. Most folks will give you an invitation without question if you can give yourself a good image starting the conversation. Presenting yourself to be a man or woman with character and giving the leader a sort of sales pitch as to why you are a good choice for being a soldato for them. In these instances, LESS is not MORE. While no one wants you to write a book, they generally will not want a sentence making up your entire existence. The more work you put into a request the more work you will be seen as doing for the family, the seats are usually handed out to the harder workers first. It would behoove you to be as respectful and honourable as you can when approaching a leader to request invitation. Unless the leader specifically says that one liners are allowed in, it is respectful to give them a synopsis of yourself as laid out in many of the handbooks written by great mafioso before you. Put your heart in it. A Good Request and A Bad Request. The good request is nearly a bare minimum, whereas the bad request is what is probably seen the most these days. And a last note on invitations - Don't send a request to every single bold and slanty suit you see. Research the families a bit, see whom you feel you'd work best with, then request for employment. If you follow my advice and they still reject you THEN move on to the next leader, because it is extremely disrespectful to ask for an invite, receive it, and then go with someone else. The Other Bosses. Now that you are a part of an illustrious crime syndicate it is time to talk about how to address other leaders in this business... point being that just because they are not your boss, doesn't mean that they don't deserve to be given the respect commanded by putting on their suit. Going about asking them for money, insulting them, or any other general disrespect is a big no-no. You should show respect to them in any dealings you may have with them. Think of how your leader would probably speak with them. A sort of WWMLD(What Would My Leader Do) moment. Polite speaking etiquette is also a plus in situations such as these as it gives the other leader a good impression on you - and it is good to have friends in higher places. Well, young mafioso, I do hope that gives you some insight to how to approach leaders. Feel free to ask questions, make comments, and such. Stepping down from his soap-box he hopes to see an increase in proper ways from young mafioso in the future. |

Very nice Sir. I've noticed from both personal experience and from others that there has been a change in how invitations have been done however. Many a time a family will be aggressive in their recruitment of new blood. My first hour in this thing of ours had me undergoing solicitation by four different families in various degrees of subtlety. It was my name of course, but still... |

Appollo this would be nice in theory, But why should they talk to you when then can sit and get an invite with in two minutes and very little talking ? In my mind the problem is the people sending out invites on a whim of a request... The new blood to our world learn from experience, what they learn right now is: Land : Get two invites Send: Can I join your Crew - Get two more Spend a fair amount of time talking to the remaining leaders maybe get an invite, maybe get told you are not exactly what we are looking for. What would you do if you wanted shelter ? |

Indeed this is an issue that I have been made very aware of, seeing as most people I have confronted with need to put effort into a request often find shelter elsewhere. It certainly would be nice for other families to be as strict, but to each their own. Honestly, if someone cannot be bothered to put in a worthy request then they do not need to be put into my family. So if they are unable to do the bit of work at the beginning who is to say they will later? Something many of the new blood need to learn is that who you choose to be your leader is everything in your life and that making such choices on a whim is generally not nearly as beneficial to either party. It boils down to the way the world is supposed to work. Times change, I am just putting forth what the great minds of this thing of ours taught me. |

Voltar, new mafiosos are given more than enough time by far. They have, at the very least mind you, more than two days in which to prove themselves worthy to a family. CL's are on fairly often and even if they aren't, you can talk to their RHM or LHM. I never seen all families indisposed... While there are cases of innocents being wacked down by trained guns daily, which is a separate and serious problem, the chances of that happening to someone new is lower than you might think. Therefore needing shelter is pointless....unless you've shot off your mouth in the streets or to a Bold Suit. If you have, good luck finding a family that would want you. Retribution scrunches her face in confusion I don't quite understand what you mean by the Land/Send statement... |

Retribution let me help you understand what I meant, One I am not talking time or life or death, pure and simply ease. My example's showed level of work involved in getting an invite. Not the need to get it right away. My point was especially for someone relatively new to our world who doesn't know our given protections what are they going to do? Accept the invite from the person they sent "Can I join your Crew" or spend all day talking back and forth while you have 4 invites sitting in your personals already ? I am of the belief we need to enforce policies on SENDING invites NOT try to beat up new people to our world about proper etiquette in asking for one. That can be learned over the course of a conversation with trying to garner an invite. But again why would they have that conversation when they already have invites waiting for acceptance. |

If they requested an invite, using a simple one liner, and received a positive response then they should take that offer. Not because it is easy but because that is respectful. That fits in with the original part of the speech talking about asking for an invite, receiving one, then joining someone else. I do agree that many of the "recruitment" practices have gotten a tad out of hand. When I first started out I was going along without my family line being known, I have seen the practices first and foremost, and although the crew that attempted to "whore" me is no more, I would not be surprised if that still happens. I have always been under the belief that it is the newcomers responsibility to seek out employment though, and thus such actions shouldn't be taking place at all anyways. Those that do it know who they are. But let me say that the topic at hand was not intended to be how the invite is received, but rather how a new blood should go about arranging an invite to be sent. It is good to set example how to stick out, because there will be a time again where there is not as much free space for just anybody. It is important to know how to set yourself apart from those who want everything handed to them. |

I myself have seen the problem Voltar is talking of on many occasions. This is my business by the way, and my way of doing things. So be lucky I am sharing in the streets. I often get 'one liners'. All the time actually. I don't ignore them, I don't think that they're going to be a waste of space. I reply, I give them a chance to do things properly with a few helpful hints about what I expect. I have exchange a few mails in the hope that by the time I am ready to invite, they have shown me that they can actually put together a coherant paragraph of why I should expcept them. You know how many times this has brought a successful invite from new blood? Twice. Why? As during this period of back and forth mails, they've accepted one of the other invites already waiting in their personals. I don't get upset at them, I don't want their death for accepting another invite while talking to me. Well, unless they've flat out asked me for an invite and then asked a number of other leaders the same question. That's flat out disrespectful. Even if they don't know the way our world works. So yeah... |

Oh! I understand what you mean now. I still disagree though...all new players, bloodline or not, are given a tutorial page. From there the can acquire the information about our given protections. Anybody who disregards that page is not using their head and that's not the greatest idea... Stopping and scratching her head, she shrugs her shoulder and goes on... That's an awkward sentence... Why would a person have four invites in the personals!? That outrageous...also keep in mind what Don Apollo just said: "Something many of the new blood need to learn is that who you choose to be your leader is everything in your life and that making such choices on a whim is generally not nearly as beneficial to either party." You're making a first impression to a potential CL. It should be as if it was a job interview and that takes work. After all, you family is going to depend on you if you manage to be trusted with something important and knowing how to put effort into something is very important. Proper etiquette makes the world what it is. |

By no means am I saying Don ApolloJustice is wrong. I commend and thank him for putting in effort the the younger generation. I think the point Voltar is trying to make is, it goes both ways. |

By all means, Jonizzel no such implications were seen. In fact, your approach to those whom request with short breaths and quick words is the very same way I attempt to teach. It is a shame that they are so quick to not listen in turn for an "easier" solution. But it happens. A great mind once said "Just because it is easy, doesn't mean it is the right choice." Or in our case the right way to go about conducting business. |

Apollo, I have been searching for something like this for a while now and have no doubt that I will find it a usefull tool in educating those fresh off the boat as to how best to conduct themselves. Thank you. |

Excellent job Apollo. All too often it seems like I'm getting mails from people who must be blind; my suit all too plainly states to send a good invite request, yet I get mails that read, "Heylo sir, may I join yer krew?" While it saddens me that some people can't spell to save their mothers life, I must sigh and attempt to show them the ropes, which is sometimes difficult, being busy and all. I think if every new mobster took a moment and read this over, they'd be much better off. Sammy hops into his blacked out car and rides off into the distance. Lord only knows what Randolfo and Cindy could be doing to each other when he got back... He prayed there would be no visible markings. |

Excellent Job Sir Apollo, all we can do now is hope they will read and learn from this thread, sir Sammy you can spare sometime of yours to help those who can't spell, may be you can start a school too. but I agree with you when you said
but most of them don't give a shit to read Street threads that will show them the right path to take. Vinicio then turns back to the dark alley he came from to do his drug runs. |

Apollo, Much of what you said here echos my true feelings as well. I'd like to touch on one thing that caught my attention. Keep in mind this a small bit that has little to do with the full subject of the post, but as I said, I fully agree with you.
My father wrote about a potential member that approached him with a long story, almost biblical in nature explaining the entirety of his/her journey to our shores and entrance into this thing of ours. He made note that he was extremely impressed, and touched on the possible notion that, if they put this much time and effort into a "simple" invite request, they will be extremely active within our streets. Just goes to show that some do appreciate story book-esque requests, correct? DG bows respectfully to his boss and awaits a possible reply. |

While you are correct that someone writing out that long of a well put together request is indeed honourable in their intention and by all means impressive, the statement was pointed toward the fact that it isn't something I would ever require of someone. I can understand those who wouldn't take the time to read epic size requests though as we are all busy men and women. But, anyone who can show that much character and will to succeed no doubt earns their right into any prospective family that has room for them. ApolloJustice straightens his tie. |

She smiles as she listens and then coughs quietly before speaking. Myself, as a leader and former Right Hand, I appreciate a bit of effort. The request does not have to be an epic tale such as Moby Dick or The Illiad, but some effort is nice. There are days when all I want to hear from a new member to our community is speech that isn't slurred or broken. In my time I have heard some strange utterances from those new to our shores, yet I have given them a chance. A little guidance and some hard work can turn an illiterate and not overly well spoken person into a budding poet others just don't get it and devolve back into their drunken slurs and made up words. The most important thing to remember is when you approach the leader of a family or one of their hands is that you are making your first impression right then and there. That impression will stick with your leader for most of your lifetime, unless you have some drastic life altering experience that awakens your inner linguistic mastery. Some of my best members have started as illiterate children fresh off the boat, but given the time and attention have come around to speaking in full sentences and using real words. It took a lot of patience, but it was worth overlooking their flawed invite request and giving them a chance. |
