“Caw , Caw, Caw.”

“Caw , Caw, Caw.”

The shrill scream of the seagulls made Clement Di Raje look up from his files. His large red brown mahogany desk was neatly organized with a small scale replica of his favorite ship “Il Oceano Cocchio”. He slowly looked at the window, and realized the sun was setting.  He wanted to finish of the letter he was writing, the letter that would make his dream come true, and more importantly the dream of his now dead beloved wife, whom he loved so much. She dreamt of sending their son abroad to the United States, the land of freedom and opportunities. He was writing to a friend of his in there regarding arrangements for his son, whom he is sending there for highter studies. Once he finished writing the letter, he called his assistant Edmondo, who has been with him for over 3 decades.

“Edmondo ! Edmondo !“

A thin fellow in a shirt, tie and a suspender pant rushed in.

“Yes sir! What do want me for?“

“Edmondo, make sure you post this letter today itself.  It is very important for Shawn.”

Edmondo loved so Shawn much, so he was more of a son to him. He has been seeing the boy from day one, and is proud of what he has achieved so far in his life. He himself had a boy, Luca, who was Shawn’s best friend, and used to play and study with Shawn, but lost him when he was abducted by the mafia for not paying his loan. A young Shawn came and hugged Edmondo on that day, and was with him till Shawn moved to the US.

“I will make sure the postmaster sends the letter out today itself. Do you want some more coffee sir?”

“No Edmondo. I am on my way home. I am taking Shawn out for dinner today.”

“That will be good for him too sir.  Let me better start now, else that old station master won’ t send this mail today.”

Having taken his cue, Edmondo was about to leave when he forgot that two men where waiting to meet Clement.

“Sir, the Giuseppe guys are here to meet you. They have been waiting to meet you for a long time.”

“Ok Edmondo, send them inside. I will talk and make sure they understand really well this time.“

Edmondo left his boss, and went to the two guys sitting down outside the office there.

“You can go in now.“

Those guys nodded a curt acknowledgement, and walked to the door, and gave a sharp knock.

“Come in.”

“Hello Clement, Giuseppe sends his greetings.”

An irritated Clement grunted.

“What do you guys want?”

“A plate a fried fish, and a pitcher of beer.”

Saying this both guys roared into laughter.

“Cut the crap.  Tell me what you guys want.”

“Well, Giuseppe wants to know your decision.  He has never waited for someone so long.”

“He didn’t have to wait.  I had already told him that I will not carry his goods. He can find another shipper.”

“Giuseppe doesn’t like to take NO for an answer.”

“Well that is all I have got to say.  Now if you guys will excuse me, I have to leave for the day.”

“You have made a grave mistake by refusing Giuseppe’s request.”

“I don’t care.  Just close the door while leaving.”

Giuseppe’s henchmen stormed out of the room, banging the door shut. Clement momentarily looked up at the door to check to see if it still was up, before returning to finish his work. He then put the files back in the shelves and stood up.  He poured himself some bourbon from the flask he had in the office, letting the fiery sting warm his throat and relaxed him. He then left his office, walked up to his car, his chauffeur had already opened the door of his brand new 1928 Fiat 525. He instructed his driver to take him to home.

Clement’s car honked upon reaching the gate of his home, and by the time his car reached the porch from the gate, young Shawn was already on the porch to greet his father.

“Papa, How was the day?”

“As usual Shawn, files, files and more files.”

“Awww Papa, are you too tired? We can go out tomorrow.”

Even though Shawn was telling his Papa that they can go tomorrow, he noticed Shawn’s face has already fallen.

“Shawn, I am not that tired.  Let’s go for dinner as planned.”

“Yay! I will go, and get dressed then.”

Saying that Shawn rushed up the stairs to his room. They had gone to one of Shawn’s favorite restaurants, and reached home late at night. Then Clement called Shawn to his office in their house, and discussed about his higher education in United States of America. Shawn didn’t want to leave, but accepted when Clement told him that this was his mom’s dream too.

1st May 1928,

Port of Gibraltar, British Oversea Jurisdiction.

“Caw , Caw, Caw.”

“Caw , Caw, Caw.”

The familiar sounds of the Seaguls brought Clement De Raje, back to the present. He was day dreaming about how his beloved son, Shawn Raje, will build their Shipping company into a global conglomerate, a dream they both shared. He was sitting on the deck of “Il Oceano Cocchio”, and they were on their way to New York, United States, where his friend, Shane McMahon, a famous importer and exporter of textile was living. Shane has made arrangements for Shawn to join the prestigious City College of New York. Shane was a great businessman. Clement noticed Shawn loitering around the deck.

“Shawn, come here.”

“Yes Papa?”

“I know we share the same dream, but now it is time to turn this Global shipping company into a conglomerate”

“Yes Papa. I will put all my efforts into it.”

“In the last mail that Shane sent, he said you can help him in his import and export business.  During free time he will teach you the tricks of the trade.”

“Papa, that is going to be so exciting. I have always been attracted to international trade. Later after I finish college we can start one in Palermo, too.”

Clement smiled as he looked at his son getting all exited. He was sure one day, Shawn will make him more proud than he is already.

10th May,

Bronx, New York, USA

When the clock struck 6 AM, the “Il Oceano Cocchio” was sailing towards the New York port, Ellis Island.  The immigration point into the United States, was visible, and “The Statue of Liberty” was standing magnificently, like an angel, guarding the city of New York. The promised land for many immigrants. Clement woke up Shawn to show the beautiful morning view of New York.

“Shawn! Shawn!”

“Shawn! Wake up.  We have reached New York.”

“Give me 5 minutes more to sleep papa.”

“Shawn! Wake up.  Look at the Statue of Liberty.  It looks magnificent. Come take a picture of me with the Statue of Liberty in the background”

Shawn pulled himself out of the bed, and blinked his eyes to look clearly. Even though his eyes burned, he opened them to see the magnificent monument.  He then looked at the city that lay ahead, the place he will call home.

"Rosalie!  Come now.  It's time to go home!"

As the two caskets were lowered into the ground, a couple urged the small saddened brown haired girl that it was time to go home.  Home? Where was home now?  Eight years old and all alone, green eyes filled with tears at such a tragic loss.

Her aunt and uncle took an 8 year old young Rose into their home when her parents passed away.  Their house was small and cramped with 5 children already, and 'adding one more mouth to feed' was a common phrase her aunt had repeated til the day Rose left.  She always felt like the outcast in the bunch, given rags to wear, extra chores to complete, very little food.  The vineyard her uncle owned was where she spent most of her days working to 'earn her keep'.

Rose would daydream as she got lost in the vineyard rows, hiding and pretending she was anywhere but there.  She remembers sneaking off to the city several times, and lurking by fancy restaurant windows.  That's where her fascination with the Mafia lifestyle began.  It wasn't hard to recognize who certain people were, even to a child she still heard whispers all around town, when adults thought she wasn't listening.  The fancy cars to expensive clothes, was an alluring attraction to this lifestyle for a young kid.

As a young girl she couldn't imagine the kind of deadly work that went on behind the scenes, in back alleys, in backroom offices, casinos, and the like.  The need to make ends meet, business dealings successful; it was all beyond her thought processes, and all Rose focused on was this was how the other half lived.  She vowed one day she would do what it took to get there too, but little did that young girl realize what lay in store for her.

March 1929

As Rose grew older, her rebellious nature became uncontrollable for her aunt and uncle.  She stayed gone most of the time, only coming home to sleep and perhaps grab a small amount of food.  She found a part time job as a courier for a local business owner.  She worked hard, and saved every penny earned.  Rose had ambitions and dreams of leaving Palermo, and a deadline to leave.

Rose will never forget the name, Luca Morales, the young mobster who befriended her when she was 15.  He was three years older, but he grew up in the lifestyle, so the life of crime seemed to age him a bit faster.  Luca never really told Rose about his past, and when she asked a couple times his jaw got tight, and his eyes dark.  He never really said much other than he missed his father.

Luca was the one who landed her the courier job.  Luca looked after her like a kid sister.  He told her several times, 'you got spunk kid', which always made her smile proudly.  Rose knew who and what Luca was, and she was warned many times over by nosy uppity women, that 'hanging round with the likes of that rascal Luca will bring her no good'.

"Ya know kid, you remind me alot of myself, full of spunk and ambitious."

Rose beamed a shy smile feeling quite pleased hearing Luca tell her this.  She admired him so much.  He was the only one who really seemed to take notice and acknowledge her as a person.

"Thanks Luca.  That means alot."

"No worries kid.  You just listen to what I tell ya, and you will get somewhere 'k."

April 1930

A year later after the courier job began, Rose had scraped and saved enough to buy a few clothes, a ticket to the promised lands across the waters, and some leftover to begin her new life.  She saved every penny she could.  Luca had told her that he was headed to somewhere called New York City, and she had begged to go too.  After a few calls, and favors, Luca came through for Rose with a place on the same boat.  Bound to the Americas in a week.  Her dreams were finally coming true, so she packed what few belongings she had.  A small porcelain figurine was all she had left of her mother, her father's Bible, and the few articles of clothing she bought, were neatly packed in a bag.

"You gonna miss Sicily Rose?"

"The only thing I will miss is being able to put fresh flowers out for my parents."

Rose had a saddened look cross her face at this thought, but took a deep breath and focused on the future.

September 29th, 1935:

The 29th of September was Honesty's birthday. He never really celebrated it because he was living with his father, Reason, and no one else. Reason didn't even celebrate his son's birthday not because he didn't want to, not because he didn't love his son, but because he was busy working for Archy most of the time. He rarely had enough time to take care of his son. He only cooked and made sure he had everything he needed. Honesty didn't mind; he was independent. He didn't want to work in the crime world and Reason told him that was okay. As long as his son didn't end up a nobody, Reason didn't mind. Honesty had no idea what he wanted to do when he was older, but he knew that he loved reading. He was reading during day and during night. Sometimes, he wouldn't have slept for a night or two because he was marveled by the book. Considering that not many people went to school back then, and didn't want to end up like the most of the mouth-breathers, Honesty read and read and read and never got tired of doing so. On this special birthday, Reason had given him a book: "The works of Shakespeare." This English writer and poet was Honesty's favorite.

June 12th, 1940:

Honesty was now 23 years old. Something in his mind snapped. He read to much; had an overdose. He was living in dad's house still and he was doing nothing of his days. Reason would come home pissed off at his son that he was doing nothing of his life. He respected Honesty's choice for not living the Mafia life, but he was going to force Honesty into it if he didn't do something of his life. That day, he enrolled in the army and began his new life. He was tired of having his father always on his back. He never knew that was the last time he would have seen his father.

August 14th, 1941:

Honesty disembarked from the plane and tried to find his father. He wasn't there. His lieutenant told him that he messaged his father letting him know of his arrival. Honesty waited hours before he realized that his father wasn't coming. Serving a year in the army protecting his country and this is how Reason repaid him. He called a taxi and told him the address, hoping his dad didn't move. When he arrived, he rang the doorbell and no one answered. Weird, Reason thought, his car was in the garage. He looked around the house for 15 minutes before finding a hidden key. he unlocked the door and found no one home. There was a bullet hole in the wall of the living room that went through their couch. What the Hell? No blood, no body, nothing. He went to the kitchen and found a note.  I'm sure you know where I am. Come find me where your dad always went after work and call this number before leaving. Honesty called it and someone picked up. "Hello?" The other person on the line hung up and Honesty rushed to the bar where his dad always went after long hours of work. When he arrived, a limo was parked outside the bar and no other cars. He knocked on the door and a big burly guy opened the door a crack, looked at him and the let him in. There was a man on a stool, drinking. The man was dressed nicely for a place like this. There were five people in the bar: The bartender, the man in the tuxedo, Honesty and two big, strong men. He walked towards the man and asked him who he was. The man turned around and presented himself as Archy. He told Honesty about his father's death. Reason had been snooping around in the police force because he suspected a rat there. He told Archy of this and advised him not to do anything rash. Reason had tried to be careful, yet failed. 2 weeks after Honesty went to war, Reason was shot in the head by the traitor. The rat hadn't known that Archy was supposed to meet him at his home with another for business. He heard the gunshot and Archy, his two most loyal bodyguards and business partner rushed to the house to fin Reason dead, blood everywhere and the traitor. They shot him twice in both kneecaps and then his bodyguards dragged him off to the HQ. Archy and his partner cleaned up the mess and then prepared the funeral.

"He's still at our HQ. We were saving him for you."
"I want to kill the bastard!" Archy took Honesty in his arms and said, " We were going to let you, but let it be known that once you kill the man, you will be working for us. Think of it as a contract for work in the Mafia world. Reason was an honorable man. He made the ranks wuickly within us. It's a shame that he passed away, but these things happen. He will be dearly missed. Now, what is your answer? Will you get rid of him or shall we?"

Honesty looked in this man's eyes and his eyes had a surprising amount of charisma. He felt absorbed by this man's words.

"Yes, I will."

New York

Shawn was pretty excited about this new city, New York. He had been here once before, but that was a short 5 day trip. He had accompanied his father on a business trip, and remembers sightseeing with his Uncle Shane. They had a great time together. He even cried on the last day of the trip because he wanted to stay back in New York. Now things have changed.  He will be part of this beautiful city, his new home. Uncle Shane was waiting there at the port because he was excited to meet his friend and godson.  Shane was Shawn’s Godfather during his baptism. After the immigration process, Shawn and Clement saw Uncle Shane waiting for them at the entrance.

“Hey Clement, how are you buddy?“

“Hi Shane. I am fine.  How are you? You haven’t changed a bit.”

Shane looked young for his age. He had not married, and spent most of his young age building his huge empire, and he was currently running. He regarded Shawn as his son, and well technically Shawn was his Godson. Shawn rushed and hugged his uncle.

“Uncle Shane, how are you?”

“I'm fine Shawn, how are you?”

Shane hugged him tight, and then they left for his home in Bronx. It was huge bungalow, with a beautiful rose garden and a driveway through that led to the front porch. After Shane climbed out of the car, and opened the door for Clement, he proclaimed.

“Welcome to the McMahon Residence!”

The house had a marble flooring and rosewood doors. Shawn was excited to stay there. Shane had asked his butler to take all the luggage, and put in their respective rooms. They rested for most part of the day. Shane and Clement went to “The Elite Business Club” in the evening to meet their friends. Shawn was given a vehicle with a chauffeur to go around sightseeing, but was instructed to be back home by 8 for dinner. Shawn, Clement and Shane spent the next couple of months sightseeing, and even went on a trip to Las Vegas. Shane had taken a much deserved break, and it was good time to get to know about Shawn, and the vice versa.

July 4, 1928

Bronx, New York

They had just returned from their trip last week, and better part of this week went into shopping things for Shawn.  He was getting ready for college. On the first day of college, Shawn was so excited. He was accompanied by both his father Clement and Uncle Shane. They left him at the college gate and wished him luck. Once Shawn got out of the car, Shane excused himself from Clement, and exited the car.

“Shawn have a great time at college, study well, but don’t forget to enjoy the college life a little bit. You will not be able to get this time back again in your life. So do enjoy life a bit. “

“Okay Uncle Shane.”

“ Also make sure you don’t get yourself into trouble either. You are a brilliant boy, and you know how to manage things.”

“Yes Uncle Shane, I understand. I won’t let dad or you down.”

“Good Shawn, Now get going we will meet up in the evening.”

Shawn got accustomed to New York and college pretty well. He was felt very sad when time came for his father to leave back to Palermo. He had promised to be back there next May, so that they can spend time together, and even take him out on a trip. Time flew fast, Uncle Shane got Shawn a brand new car to go to college when he turned 18 in December 1928.

February 24, 1929

Bronx, New York

A dreaded telegram ripped Shawn’s world apart. Clement and Edmondo were killed by Giuseppe for not agreeing to carry his goods. Shane hugged Shawn, and promised to himself to take care of him as his own son. Shawn and Shane tried everything to try and get justice, but no one in Palermo was ready to go against Giuseppe. Shane used some of his mafia connections, and found out that only a mafia can take out another. Shane was heartbroken that he couldn’t do much. Shawn also heard this, and decided to avenge the death of his farther and caretaker.

March 25, 1930

Bronk, New York

It was late in the evening; Shawn had a few classes earlier in the afternoon.  Since one of the classes got cancelled, he decided that he will go work out in the gym for a little bit. If he wanted to become a Mafioso, he needed to make sure he is well built for it. After the workouts, he was walking towards his car, and it was dark and deserted.  There was he saw a mother and her son walk by smiling at him, and he smiled back. Just when he was about the get into his car, he heard a loud shriek.  Shawn turned right back and saw the mom and son being pulled into the nearby alley. A group of thugs were trying to mug them. Shawn immediately ran to help.

“HELP! HELP! Helllllupp!”

“ Hey, leave them alone.”

"Mind you own business, kiddo."

Shawn tries to pull the mother and her son towards him, but one of the thugs pushed him to the ground. Shawn became furious, and noticed a log of wood nearby. He reaches for it, grabbing hold tightly then started smacking the thugs real hard.  The thugs were unable to manage Shawn’s nasty blows, and  abandoned the mugging, disappearing down the dark alley. Shawn then takes the mother and son to their home in his car before returning home himself.

August 5, 1930

Bronx, New York

It was decided that Shawn can work in Shane’s office when he is not at college, or out with his friends. He will start with the managing their textile division. Shane wanted to train Shawn in all the divisions, and he was looking at Shawn to take over the empire eventually. Shawn started going to the suit shops, and he was learning the tricks of the trade pretty fast. He had a natural flair for business. He helped Uncle Shane streamline the business, and started making more revenues.  The college courses and hands on working, gave Shawn the extra boost.

While working in the suit shop, he got acquainted with lots of Mafiosi. Shawn brought in a lot of changes into the suit shop. He wanted to export the suits, and import the raw materials required. He knew his uncle had a import/export agent in South Philadelphia. He wanted to meet with him, and begin working together.

November 15,1930

Bronx, New York

It was a cold day. Shawn just wanted to be inside the whole day. He visited their suit shop, and went about the day to day running of the store. He pretty soon wanted to go out for a walk because he was bored sitting inside the shop with little business in the morning time due to the weather. Just when he was about to get out of the shop he noticed a familiar face, but he wasn’t able to place where he had seen that face. The other gentleman also stopped midway, and turned towards Shawn. He had seen that face somewhere. Then it dawned on Shawn, this was Luca, his long lost friend and Edmondo’s son, who was abducted by the Sicilian Mafia. Shawn immediately rushed towards Luca, a stunned look as the young man realised it was Shawn from Palermo.

“Luca! Goodness! How are you?”

“Shawn! Wow!”

“I can’t believe this. I thought I will never be able to see you again in my life.”

“How are you Shawn? What are you doing here? How is Dad, Uncle Clement?”

“Wait lets get inside.”

Shawn explained how things changed in their life after Luca was abducted. How Shawn came to New York. Luca told him how he was forced into the Mafia after he was abducted, and how he met a little girl, who was like a sister to him.  Luca described how he had come to New York with her. Shawn then told what happened to their fathers.  This enraged Luca beyond control. Shawn talked him out of doing anything stupid, and asked him to wait till he was powerful enough. Shawn also expressed his desire to be part of the Mafia.

December 3, 1930

Bronx, New York

Shawn had taken Luca to “The Flying Elephant” bar in the Bronx. There Luca introduced Shawn to Utopia-, a mafioso from a family in South Philly.  They had a drink together, and discussed various things. When Utopia left, Luca started again about how his blood was boiling to seek revenge right away. Shawn assured him since he was also going to get into the mafia, and he wanted Luca to wait patiently till the time was right. Since Utopia's boss was going to be traveling a bit on business trips, he wants Shawn to meet him in a few months.

America: The Land of Opportunity

May 16, 1930

"Hey Rose.   Did ya get that package delivered for me this morning?"

"Sure thing Luca.  Mr. Mancini said I was one of the best young workers he has dealt with."

Rose smiled proudly at telling this news to Luca because Mr. Mancini was  well known here in Bronx, New York.  It was a matter of knowing who was who, and the right connections, so Rose could one day make a better life for herself.  Luca helped her out so much, and she just wanted him to be proud of her on her own merit, and not just his coat tails.

July 8, 1930

Rose ventured out time to time over the past couple months snatching purses, collecting wallets, and meeting as many people as she could. She knew what she wanted, so she decided it was up to her to go and get it.  She had learned everything she could from observing Luca, and listening to his guidance, so she spent time honing her skills.  One day soon Rose was hoping to join a family, and feel a part of something real. She missed the closeness of a family, and that struggle urged her on helping her to succeed.

August 18, 1930

Things were starting to become odd in the Bronx.  Luca was slipping off more and more to the bars, and this left Rose concerned nonstop.  She had covered for him more often lately, and Rose wished she knew what the problem was.  When she would ask, he would simply shrug things off, and tell her to not worry about it.

"But Luca.  I don't know what I will do without you.  You're the only family I've got, so you need to get it together.  Please!  For me!"

"Listen kid.  You don't know what I know, so it's best you let it go."

"Don't call me a kid Luca.  I've grown up alot in the past couple years."

"You will always be a kid to me."

Luca grabbed the flask from his pocket, and went to the couch.  Stretching out and relaxing a bit, he took a long swig, then closed his eyes.

"I can feel your eyes on me kid, so grab a seat and relax, eh.  Things will get better one day.  I won't always be around, so ya gotta toughen up and get streetwise."

"But Luca..."

"No buts kiddo.  Facts are facts.  This life we live if unpredictable at best.  We live for the moment and take care of our own.  Listen, I wanna tell you some stuff in case anything should ever happen to me.  There is a place I want you to go, and get the hell out of New York.  Promise me!"

Confused and feeling a bit saddened at the thought of anything happening to Luca, Rose was smart enough to understand this lifestyle held no guarantees.  She has seen too much in her young years to know the impact of being in this business.  She wanted desperately to shake her head, and refuse to listen, but she knew he spoke the truth.  It was up to her to carry on his legacy, so she listened to everything he had to say.

"Got it kid?"

"Yes Luca.  Go to Philly and look him up.  I got it."

Lowering her eyes to ward off the threatening tears, Rose learned to hide emotions at times because she didn't wanna appear weak in Luca's eyes, or make him look bad.  She took criticism with no attitude, and turned it around to improve herself.  Her goals were aimed high, and she had every desire to see them fulfilled.

September 13, 1930

"Luca.  Luca, wake up.  Mr. Mancini is looking for you.  What happened?  You were supposed to be there last night at the museum."

"Go away kid.  I'm beat."

"Look, I know something is wrong for the past few months.  Now c'mon and tell me for pete's sake."

"Sometimes you just don't know when to quit kid."

"C'mon Luca just tell me.  Does it have anything to do with Edmondo?"

Luca rolled over with a scowl on his face, and barked angrily.  He didn't know how she knew about his father, and he cursed himself for drinking so much, and talking in his sleep.  Lately the nightmares had gotten worse and worse, as he remembered how he was snatched away as a young kid.

"Kid.  You don't anything, so if you value our friendship, I am gonna say once more to leave it."

December 29, 1930

Rose waited for three hours at the coffee shop before giving up and heading home.  Luca was supposed to be here ages ago.  Now she was getting worried because this pattern was all too regular these past months.  After checking at the apartment, and finding nothing, Rose began calling to all his local hotspots.  Coming up empty handed, she had no choice but to wait.

January 5, 1931

"Rose don't worry.  I'm sure things will be okay.  Luca probably had business to take handle."

"Mr. Mancini it's been a week now, and no contact.  I can't help but worry. He hasn't ever done this, not letting me know anything."

"Dear calm down.  If you need me for anything you know where to find me , but I have an important meeting to attend.  I will check on you later Rose."

"Yes sir.  Thank you."

Rose looked around the empty apartment with a frown.  Luca always made sure he left word if he had to travel, but he just up and disappeared. Now she fears the worst, and the tears threatened to spill over her cheeks as she sat down.

A Place to Call Home

January 14, 1931

New York City was chilly as the wind splashed across her cheeks.  Rose dabbed eye with her handkerchief as another tear rolled down her face. It was a senseless death, and it left her confused and feeling bereft.  Luca was all she had left in this world, and now he was gone.

He had taught her so much on survival, money making, and knowing how to perfect the art of pickpocketing with minimal, if any, detection. Rose had even accompanied him on a small heist.  She was mainly the lookout, but hey it was a step in the right direction.  She was trying to show her worth, but now she wasn't sure what to do.

Rose loved the big city appeal of New York, but Luca had given her a name of an acquaintance in Philly.  Luca said to go there if anything should happen to him.  She gave one last look towards the tombstone before laying a red rose down with a soft goodbye.  Sighing softly, Rose thought about the journey ahead, and where she might end up.  Philly...

February 4, 1931

Rose found herself on Main Street, chilled to the bone, and starving.  The evening air was freezing, so she bundled herself up more in the wool overcoat as she located the diner she was searching for.  The consierge at the hotel recommended this local hotspot, saying the owner knew just about everyone and everything here in South Philly.  That's just the kinda place Rose was looking for because she wasn't quite sure where to find the man she needed.

"Welcome to Pat's King of Steaks!  How may I help you Miss?"

The middle aged gentleman had a broad smile, and a slightly receding hairline, but overall seemed harmless and friendly to her.  Rose smiled softly at the older man, and allowed him to greet her as if she were family as he led her to the end of the counter.

"We have a wonderful special of the day, Pat's Famous Philly cheese steak and fries."

"That sound good.  I will have that thank you."

"Joe!  A special for the lady, pronto!"

The diner was somewhat empty for the time of night, but Rose imagined the cold weather kept most people home.  Home.  She wished she felt at home somewhere.  Sighing softly, Rose reached for the ice water in front of her.

"Ah cara!  Such a sad sigh.  What is troubling you dear?"

"Oh nothing sir."

"Please my dear.  You do not have to 'sir' me.  I am Pat, and that is how you should call me, yes?"

"Yes, s... Pat."

"Ah now that is done, what is on your mind ?  Is it a boy, no?"

Shaking her head, Rose couldn't help but smile at that.  Boys were the farthest thing from her mind.

"No.  Not hardly.  It's just I am new to the city here, and looking for a certain person, but not sure where to start searching.  The consierge said you knew everyone here in South Philly, so I thought perhaps I should stop by."

"Ah yes, cara.  Who is it you are looking for?  Perhaps they are nearby, yes?"

"His name is Archy.  A friend of mine told me to look him up soon as I got here."

A certain look crossed Pat's face, an all too familiar look of the lifestyle to which Rose was accustomed.  Nodding he told her all will be okay, he will make a couple of phone calls.

"You sit tight cara, I will keep an eye on you.  Just enjoy your dinner, yes."

"Thank you Pat."

Joe set this delicious looking plate of food on the counter, with a soft word, and took off back to the kitchen as Rose noticed his reddening cheeks.  She was famished, and nearly had her entire plate devoured by the time she heard a strange animal sound right before a hand touched her shoulder.  Rose turned in surprise as she noticed a camel next to a young man.  His hand extended towards her, offering a smile as he spoke.

"Evening.  I hear you were lookin' for someone."

"Yes.  A friend of mine gave me a name of an acquaintance of his here in Philly, and said I would be welcomed and taken care of there."

"Mind if I join you?"

Nodding in acceptance, Rose waved her delicate hand towards the barstool next to her, as the gentleman took a seat.  She glanced back towards the camel, and arched her eyebrow.

"Ah thank you.  Oh don't mind Astro, he won't bite.  So...tell me who is this friend who sent you here."

A look of sadness splashed across her face as Rose mentioned Luca's name to this man.  He nodded as if he knew Luca, then waved to Pat for something to eat for the camel and for himself.  Pat didn't seemed to be bothered by a camel in his diner, so she wasn't gonna be concerned either.  He learned about her past, her childhood, and her ambitions. After a few more questions, and answers back and forth between the man and herself, Rose finally couldn't stop herself from thinking this family sounded like the place for her, and she wanted in, but she needed to find this Archy fellow.

"So, Rose is it?  Do you have any other questions?"

He took another bite of his cheese steak, and waited as Rose took a deep breath, and asked the next question.

"For now just one more.  Would it be possible to meet Don Archy tonight, and see if he would welcome me into the family?  Sorry that's two questions I guess."

Smiling, the gentleman took a drink, grabbed the napkin to wipe his hands, and turned to face Rose.  He briefly looked towards the camel, and winked.

"Sure.  I happen to know that 'Don Archy' would be most welcoming to have you in his family."

"Really?  Would it be possible to meet him soon?"

"Sure. Sure. That can be arranged."

With a smile, the gentleman hopped off his stool, stood next to the camel, and extended his hand once more to Rose.

"By the way let me introduce myself.  The name's Archy.  Let's see about getting you home.  C'mon Astro this girl needs to get home."

The chuckle from her new boss echoed through the diner because the look of surprise on Rose's face was priceless.  Here she was worried about making a good impression on her boss-to-be, and all along Don Archy himself  was the one sizing her up, and approved instantly.  That one word stuck out to Rose most out of everything else he had said.....'Home'.

It was late on Feb 3rd, Archy was roaming around the streets of Detroit after finishing some deals with the locals dealers here, enjoying the rain and the late night breath, he had no plans of what to do next. He noticed a a young lady snatching purses like there's no tomorrow, stealing and extorting shop owners with her weapon, the lady had no tags, she was a mere gangster with no plans, Archy followed the lady quietly into a backalley, he withdrew his gun and cocked it, as the lady disappeared and was counting her bounty, Archy pressed the cold steel of his colt to the back of her skull and whispered "Things don't go like that here, you should have joined a family before starting your criminal activities like that" in her ears, before pulling the trigger. A loud bang was heard and the youngster was swimming in a lake of her own blood. Archy quickly took a drift and left that alley, a few minutes later he was at the airport heading back home to Philadelphia, he arrived at the Philadelphia's local airport and Astro was waiting for him outside, the two took the car and drove home to their headquarters.

"You got a blood stain on your shirt Archy, what happened in Detroit?"

Archy checked his shirt, he hadn't noticed that before.

"Oh Dear! I never noticed that, glad no one else did, that could have gotten me in trouble. It was nothing big, just a local thug causing too much havoc in Detroit. It's taken care of anyway, let's just head home, I need some rest."

The two remained quiet as they arrived to the humpers headquarters, each headed to his office, Archy got changed and rested on his couch, as he poured himself a drink. He was half way through his bottle of gin when he got a phone call.

"Looking for me? Okay I'll be there soon."

Archy had received a phone call from a friend who works at one of Philadelphia's local bars, saying that someone was looking for him, he got dressed and called for Astro to join him then they both took off to Pat's King of Steaks' shop. As they arrived to the place, Archy pointed to his guards to stay outside, and walked in alongside Astro. Patrick noticed Archy arrive with Astro, he walked to greet them and whispered something in Archy's ears, as he pointed at a lone lady sitting at the bar across them, Archy nodded in acknowledgement and headed her way, he greeted her.

"Evening there, I hear you're looking for someone, mind if I took a seat?"

The lady was welcoming and invited them to join her, she was staring at Astro all the time, she looked a bit worried at the presence of a camel in a bar, so Archy comforted her.

"Nevermind Astro, he's my friend, he won't bite."

He laughed as he looked at Astro and nodded at him to take a seat nearby, then waved to Pat to get their regular orders ready.

"So who sent you?"

Archy heard the lady's side of the story as Pat arrived with his meal, Archy started eating as he listened to her, the two exchanged a few questions as they got to know eachother more.

"Well I am sorry for the loss of your mother Rose, I am sure it was plain business not personal."

The lady nodded in agreement.

"I know sir, nothing can be done to change the past."

Archy smiled and asked if she had more questions.

She was full of enthusiasm and probably had a ton of questions to ask, but she only asked about meeting Archy and being part of his family. Archy smiled and nodded at her.

"Don't worry about that Rose-Raje, I happen to know that "Don Archy" would love to welcome you into his headquarters."

Archy could notice the wide smile drawn on her face as she asked if it was possible to meet up with Archy soon, Archy grinned as he got off the stool and extended his hand to the lady.

"Let me introduce myself properly now, I am Archy Don of the camel humpers and this is Astro, my best friend and assistant, he helps me run the humping operations on a daily basis. Who can have more experience in camel humping than a real camel?"

Archy chuckled at the look of surprise drawn on her face then pointed to Astro who was nearly going to munch the plate too after finishing his meal.

"Come on Astro, this girl needs a home, let's go get her one."

He then turned back to Rose and smiled.

"Come on Rose, let me show you your new home."

He turned to Pat and pet the man on the shoulder, then slid a 20 dollars note in his pocket, Pat smiled gratefully at Archy and thanked him. Astro got out first to get the car ready to drive the three home to the camel humpers headquarters.

A place to call home

January 1, 1931

Bronx, New York

Shawn and Luca met again in “The Flying Elephant” bar to celebrate the New Year. Luca was looking like he had been drinking a lot of late. Shawn asked him to cut down a bit on the drinking. Luca told how Archy wanted to use his skills in South Philly, in a few months. Luca said then he can have Shawn with him there.

“Shawn, this new year will be a great year for us.”

“Yes Luca, we have finally met after all these years. You and Shane are the only ones in my life now.”

Luca called for a toast.

“ Shawn, I will never leave you. We are brothers, we are a team, we are mafia”

They happily discussed about what they are going to do in future, business, family….

January 11th, 1931

Bronx, New York

Shawn woke up at the wee hours of the morning. He had woken up from a bad dream, but he had a premonition something bad is gonna happen. Since it was very early in the morning he just tried to go back to sleep. But ended up tossing and turing in the bed with no sleep. Finally he gave up on the sleep, went about his morning chores and was ready by 8 in the morning. He was in no mood to go to work today, the bad dream kept him on the edge, so he decided to pay Luca a visit.

He got in his 1929 Studebaker, and drove towards Luca’s place. As he turned into the street, he noticed there were a lot of police cars parked and a huge gathering. He instantly knew something was wrong. He parked his car a little before Luca’s house, and started walking towards the gathering. He saw a old man standing near the gate.

“Hello Sir, What happened ?“

“Ah, some young thug was shot yesterday.”

“Who?“

“Luca, he was always looking for trouble.”

Shawn's feet suddenly gave way, and he stumbled nearly falling, but was quickly caught by the old man. Shawn hastily composed himself.

“Son are you alright ? Did you know Luca.”

Shawn was overcome with emotions, and he nodded yes to the old man before continuing inside towards the house. At the entrance he saw a lot of Luca’s friends had come to pay their last respect. He slowly walked inside and tears welled in his eyes, today he had lost his dear friends, Luca’s memories came flooding in his mind, together with them came the memories of his dad and good old Edmondo. He lost yet another soul in his life, all he has in his life now is Shane.

He wanted to know why, why his beloved friend had fallen. He heard couple of guys talking saying Luca had been in Brooklyn the previous day for business.  It was there Luca had met a Sicilian by the name of David Giuseppe, the younger of the Giuseppe brothers from Palermo. Luca tried to kill David out of rage and vengeance, but was shot down by his bodyguards. The flame of revenge grew brighter in Shawn's heart now. He had lost three of his beloved to Giuseppe Family.  He didn't want to lose anyone anymore. Shawn walked away determined to make amends for all theses deaths.

Uncle Shane had called Shawn to his bedroom in the McMahon residency.  Uncle Shane was in his bed, propped up with the pillow. He looked old and pale. On seeing his uncle in this position Shawn rushed to bed.

“Uncle Shane! What happened to you?”

“Ah, just the regular blood pressure variations and exhaustion.”

“But you look all pale.  Wait let me get the doctor.”

“Its fine Shawn. Our doctor came about an hour, and he has given me medicines. I will be back to normal in a couple of weeks.”

“Uncle, you need to take care of your body. You need more like couple of months rest.”

“Well that is what the doctor advised, so Shawn, now that your course is coming to an end, I need you to take care of our other business as well.”

“Uncle, Don’t worry about the business, I will take care of it.”

“I know my son.  I want you to go to Philly tomorrow. Our Import/Export agent there is trying to scam us out of our money and goods. I need you to go and find at a new agent there for our business.”

“Ok Uncle, I will do that. I kind of know an Import/Export agent in Philly already.”

“I trust your judgement in this Shawn.  Import and export business is in your blood.”

Saying this both Shawn and Uncle Shane laughed before Shane had a spell of coughing. Shawn asked his Uncle to not stress, and left saying he had to make the arrangements for the trip to Philly tomorrow.

February 20, 1931

Old City District, Philadelphia

The winter morning in Philadelphia was no different from any other day. Shawn had taken the early morning flight from New York to Philadelphia. Upon reaching Philly, he was picked up at the airport by their company manager, Richard Paulson. They climbed into a swanky sky blue Delage D-6.  Uncle Shane had bought the car when he visited the import and export business last year. They drove down to the guest house, and Shawn refreshed himself then got ready to go the office.

“Shawn, are you ready? Can we leave for office now ?“

“Yes Richard, I am ready, but lets go and meet John Salvatore first.”

Shawn noticed a Richard’s face turn white for a few seconds before he recomposed himself.

“But Shawn, we haven’t got an appointment with him. It will look rude if we dropped without an invitation.”

“Come on Richard.  It will be a surprise for John to see me here.”

Richard had thought that Shawn was here just on a courtesy visit, but now that Shawn wanted to meet John Salvatore first, he was worried Shawn had come to know about the arrangement between John and himself.  Richard took the longest way possible because he knew John will leave for his daily dose of horse racing, and wouldn't be back to office around 12 for lunch.

“Richard, how long will it take from here”

“We will be there in a 5 mins.”

As soon as they reached the John’s office, the security let the car in seeing Richard. There Richard saw John’s car still there in the parking lot. They entered the office, and requested the receptionist to inform John that Richard had come to meet him.

“Richard! How long have you been working with us?“

“I have been working here for the past 10 years.”

“Good! Good!”

John’s receptionist led them to John’s office, and a heated argument ensued between John and Shawn. Just as Shawn was leaving the room John bellowed an empty threat.

“I will see how you export your goods without my help. You are doomed.”

“Good, enjoy the front seat view”

Shawn left with a eerie smile which confused both John and Richard. Shawn knew the right person who can help him now. He then informed Richard to take him to the office. Shawn spent the rest of the afternoon looking at the files. He then left for the “The Golden Chariot” bar in the Old City District. As soon as he entered the bar, he asked the bartender for Utopia. He pointed him towards a man in dark black suit. Shawn approached him slowly.

“Hi, I am Shawn. I want to meet Utopia.”

The men in dark suit looked at Shawn form top to bottom and then nodded him to sit in front of him.

“Why do you want to meet him?”

“I met him with Luca in December in New York. He asked me to meet him when I come to Philadelphia.”

Upon hearing Luca’s name Tony stiffened a bit. He missed his friend a little bit. He signaled one of his bodyguards to inform Utopia about Shawn.

“How do you know Luca?”

“We grew up together.  We were very close.”

“He was a good friend of mine.”

They shook hands as the bodyguard returned, and ushered Shawn inside to Utopia.

“Hi Shawn.  How are you ?”

“Hi Utopia! I am good, thank you. How are you ?”

“Good! Good! So what brings you to Philly?”

“I am here on business.”

Shawn explained how he started taking care of Uncle Shane’s import export business, and how John Salvatore has been cheating his uncle. He was here to set things right. Shawn wanted to see if Utopia could help him get a import export agent. Utopia introduced Shawn to Lynchy of Lynchy’s Import Exports the next day.  From that day onward, Uncle Shane became Lynchy’s biggest client.

July 3, 1931

Old City District, Philadelphia

It was 5 months since Shawn and Lynchy forged a business deal. By virtue of his business Shawn had to travel a lot. This enabled Shawn to start doing odd jobs for Lynchy. He started doing drug runs to different cities, and even assisted Lynchy in running a few loansharking operations.

Since Uncle Shane recovered well, and started going back to his office. They also planned to expand their business in Philadelphia. Since Shawn was given complete incharge of all operations in Philadelphia, he moved to Philly. This enabled him to spend more time with Lynchy, Soon Lynchy started trusting Shawn with bigger jobs.

December 21, 1931

Old City District, Philadelphia

The Old City District was having the air of festivity, life was bustling around, and kids discussing about what they want from Santa Claus. Shawn was sitting in his car, waiting on this cold day. He longed to get inside the bar across the street, and get a quick drink or two, but decided against it. He needed to focu because this day was important, but he didn’t know this day was gonna change his life for good. He saw Chris Sanders walk out of the bar, his fat belly, and round face made him look rotund. He was drunk like a fish, and was stumbling and staggering as he tried to find his car. Chris Sanders was the new labor union leader at the port, and had been giving Lynchy and Shawn a lot of problems. He was trying to impress people. He was lone guy, no family or friends, so spent most time at the port, and was helping the police to crack on the illegal imports and exports.

Shawn and Lynchy had spoken to him the previous week.  They wanted him to stop snooping into their business. He was arrogant at his best. Shawn was pissed, but Lynchy advised him this was not the time nor place. They had decided that Chris Sanders had to go and swim with fishes, of course with the cement shoes on him. They decided to take him out, and Shawn was given the task. This was the first time for Shawn to kill some one. He has not taken a life in his lifetime. He was all nervous the previous night, and slept through the day. Chris Sanders was always surrounded by his union members. His regular routine was to go to work in the morning, drink and get wasted in the evening, and ending up at his single room apartment for the night.

Shawn started following Chris as he started walking towards the 8th Elms Street and 24th Sable Street. Shawn started to follow him. Shawn knew on days when Chris was drunk too much and alone, he would leave his car, and walk in this direction. Just before the junction, Chris enters an alley, and kept walking until he reached Katrina’s house. Chris had an affair with Katrina, but hardly anyone knew about this connection. Shawn waited till Chris entered the house, and then hid behind the dumpster near Katrina’s house. Chris walked out in a few minutes to smoke. Shawn came from behind the dumpster, and spun a stunned Chris around.

“I told you to stay out of the way!”

“Who the f’ck are you ?”

Chris Sanders eyes popped out as he realised who it was, and when he opened his mouth to scream, the only sound he was that of his blood choking his slit throat. Shawn quickly looked around to check if anyone else had seen him. He wipes the blade with his handkerchief, and put it inside his coat as he casually walked back towards his car, got in, and drove towards home. He needed a shower.  Shawn knew he could kill if was necessary, but didn’t expect to do so with this much ease. The murder of his family and friend turned his resolve into steel. Once he finished it, he remembered Lynchy was throwing a small Christmas party for his employees.  Shawn was invited, but he was tired and wanted to go to bed early. Lynchy had specifically told him not to miss it at any cost, so he decided on paying a quick visit.

As soon as Shawn entered he knew this was no small Christmas party. There were lots of people.  People from different walks of life were there. He noticed Lynchy and Utopia talking with the city mayor and a tall stranger. He then noticed Tony Ventroni. Shawn had grown close to Tony since the day they had met back in February.

“Tony boy! How are you?”

“I am good Shawn. How are you? How was your day?”

“So far so good, but I am a little tired, so want to wind down in the bed soon.”

“Oh, come on! You can stay a little bit longer today.”

“Well I will try.  Let me say hi to Lynchy, and be right back.”

“Ok go and meet him fast, I think Archy is leaving soon. Hello sweetheart! You wanna another round of champagne?”

Saying this Tony went along with a beautiful girl. Shawn smiled as he walked towards Lynchy. Lynchy noticed Shawn, and waved him to come to him. Lynchy excused himself, and came to meet Shawm.

“Hi Shawn! How did it go?”

“Hey Lynchy! It went smoother than I thought.”

“I knew it man, I know you had it in you.”

Lynchy then patted Shawn on his shoulder.

“Now, here is the surprise that I promised you.”

Surprise?

A confused Shawn followed Lynchy, Lynchy then introduced Shawn to the Mayor and Don Archy. Shawn looked at Don Archy awestruck. He had heard a lot about Archy from Luca, Utopia, Lynchy and Tony. He never dreamt of meeting Don Archy anytime soon, so this truly was a surprise.

“Archy, Rogers this is Shawn, and this is Chris Rogers, Mayor of Philadelphia, and this is our Don Archy.”

Shawn shook hands with both, and Lynchy started explaining how he and Shawn started doing business together, and grew into friends. They spoke for a little while till the Mayor had to leave. Lynchy went with the Mayor to send him off, leaving Shawn with Don Archy.

“So Shawn how long have you been in Philadelphia?”

I have been coming here since this February, but moved here for good in July.”

“Where were you before that?”

“I did part of my schooling in Italy and in England, before returning back to Italy, and coming to New York for my College.”

“That is interesting, you seem to have traveled a lot.”

“Yes Sir I did.  My dad had a big Import Export business in Palermo. I used to travel along with him during the holidays.”

“So you are with your Dad here?”

“No I am here with my dad’s friend, Uncle Shane. He is all I got now.”

“I am sorry for your loss.”

Lynchy joined them after sending off the Mayor.

“Archy, Shawn has been helping me a lot in the past few months.”

“That is good Shawn, Lynchy is a dear friend of mine, and any help you do for him is a help to me.”

“Archy, like I told you, Shawn helped me set up the latest round of loan sharking. He knows a thing or too in that as well.”

“Shawn, nice work.  This racket is raking in money, and I can use a guy like you.”

Saying this Archy looked at Shawn and Lynchy and Utopia. They winked back at him.

“Lynchy, before I forget, did you get the union leader issue sorted?”

“Archy, Shawn just sent him swimming with the fishes.”

Archy congratulated Shawn then pulled Lynchy and Utopia to have a quick word, before long all the three came back smiling at Shawn. Then Don Archy took Shawn aside putting his hands on his shoulder.

“Shawn, Lynchy and Utopia have spoken very highly about you. They don’t talk like that about someone  so soon, so I am happy to invite you into our family. Are you ready to be part of the our family.”

The whole world spun around crazily for Shawn.  Today has been so good. He pinched himself to confirm that he was not dreaming. He was happy earlier just to meet Don Archy, but now he is being invited to join the family by Don Archy himself.

“Sir, Thank you very much. I have been waiting for this moment for so long, now it is here, and I don’t know what to say.”

“We are happy to have someone like you in the family. I know you are going on a business trip tomorrow to England I hear, I want you to take care of a few items of business for me.”

“I will be glad to do that Sir.”

“I will make the announcement in the family once you come back.”

Don Archy and Shawn discussed the job that needed to be done in England. It will be a couple weeks before Shawn will be officially introduced to the family, but today is the day he had been waiting for so long, and this is the place he wanted to be in.  The place he can call home.
