Just A Sentimental Fool Started by: HuskyRadhe on Aug 13, '17 11:01

As he sat on the corner of West Jefferson Avenue, handcuffed and helpless,  while Mephisto talked to the copper, Husky thought about how he got stuck in this situation.

Husky was a hot headed young orphan who came to the city a couple of months ago looking to make a quick buck. The seedy underbelly of Detroit was the perfect place for him to stir up some trouble and stir it he did. Soon enough he was doing odd jobs for the Rebel Alliance. Robbing schmucks , knocking off stores, boot-legging a crate or two of rum. It was gruelling work, but the crew saw him work his ass off. Husky was smart though. He never flashed his money. No expensive suits or fast women for him. He knew no copper would suspect the guy wearing a soot stained fedora , living in an old shack.

When Scooter came around looking for a getaway driver on a big score he had in mind, Husky jumped at the chance. Scooter had found out that a truck full of top notch Canadian Whiskey bound for the army base at Fort Wayne would be passing through the city in 3 days. It was easy money. The Job went off without a hitch. They stored the booze in a warehouse Downtown, paid off the local cop , sent tribute to Mephisto and started unloading it slowly day by day. They took every precaution, but sometimes fate just isn't on your side. A bottle of this infamous whiskey had found its way to an FBN agent's unwitting son, who gifted it to his father for his birthday. Once Agent Joe Melizzano recognized the stolen whiskey his son handed him it was only a matter of time.

The cop they had paid off squealed, Scooter ran to the mattresses, Husky got pinched buying cigarettes outside his shack. "Ah! Will, I be receiving the famous Detroit Police Hospitality today Detective Hendrickson?" Husky asked the detective once his boys had landed a couple of punches and slipped on the handcuffs.
"You're lucky kid. You've got friends in high places. They gave us our due, enough to pin the robbery on some hapless schmuck. Sit down while the deal is finalized." he said while shoving Husky onto a bench and walking off to talk with Mephisto. "Well if you're not going to arrest me , would you mind picking up my fedora? I seem to have dropped it while I was getting to know you boys." Husky said to one of the cops standing guard. "This sooty old thing? Why do you want it anyway?" the cop enquired while placing it on Husky's head. Husky spat out blood on the pavement then replied grinning  "Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool."

The detective came back with Mephisto , both smoking cigars. He unlocked Husky and said "Alright kid , you're free to go. Try not to get caught next time and save us all the paperwork."
Mephisto waited till the cops were out of earshot then said "Come on, the Don wants to see you."
Husky was not worried. He knew if they wanted to wack him they wouldn't go through the trouble of having him released. But he was nervous, it was his first time meeting the Don after all. About an hour later, they were in the empty cellar of an old winery in Black Bottom. It had been closed down once the prohibition started.

Don Ackbar stood in the middle of the room drinking a glass of whiskey. "This hooch was not worth all the trouble you got yourself in kid," he said while staring at his glass "let's see what you can do with something that is actually worthwhile.  Look around the cellar, what would you do with a shithole like this?" Husky took a moment to gaze at the room and replied, "It's got potential. Setup a bar in the corner over there, a couple of poker tables by that door there, a bookie in the next room , some tables, some girls, maybe a jazz band, some dim lights, a few exotic plants and I could probably class this place up into a proper gentleman's club. Setup a laundromat as a front up top, payoff Hendrickson and Melizzano with the rest of the stolen whiskey. Could turn into a solid earner."

"Good , have some of the boys from the crew help you out . The place is yours, I expect it up and running in 2 weeks. What are you going to call it?" Don Ackbar asked. "The Sooty Fedora" Husky said. "I like it. Has a certain panache to it. Why did you choose that name?" the Don enquired. Husky replied grinning, "Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool."
