(…Or is it?) I was discussing with an associate the other day about the name of my ‘corporation’, and how I should possibly change it. The man used such phrases as it wasn’t ‘traditional’ and does not give a real sense of what our ‘world is about’. That it was ‘unorthodox’ in comparison with how the old days, the ones we read about in our mother’s and father’s diaries or letters, used to be. And it really got me to thinking about those days, and what my fore-mothers and fathers had ever mentioned about them in the scarce scraps of information they left behind. Honestly? Couldn’t remember too much. As he went on I feel I sort of got a glazed look about my face, my apologies, mate. In the end, though, I truthfully wanted to know- so I asked him, “What do you mean by traditional?” “Italian”. Oh, of course. Italian. What was I thinking? Well, that’s all well and dandy… for the Italians. I know personally, being an Irish man and all, I’d look rather silly having a family name that was of a language different than, well, the English I grew up speaking. So I told my friend as much; I named my family not after this ‘traditional sense’. That there was much more behind why I chose The Catalyst Conspiracy- Badass Inc. Division. Why? I did it as a tribute to the syndicate and the man who gave me my shot in this world- a man who raised me, who gave me a foot up in my crime career, and who’s family line to this day still sacrifice themselves selflessly to help me succeed. The second part just sounded pretty ‘badass’, to be honest. Didn’t give much thought to it then because then- it was just a name. Now to me it symbolizes a whole slew of other things. Yet what he said really got me thinking. Immediately I headed back to my little loft and dug through long forgotten family treasures, and found out that a surprising amount of these old crews used to have labels of a certain style- and certainly not in a language recognizable as English. Back then names like Badass Inc. were quite the rare sight to see, it seemed. Has our world changed that much in such a short time from those days labeled as a chaotic Armageddon? ‘Traditional’ names still find their way in our current world, such as with Sal in New York and Moretay in New Orleans heading up Casa Di Giaquinto and La famiglia di Soldati (respectively), true. Yet it is more common to see family names moving in a different direction: my own, The Iguana Corporation, Alcoholics Anonymous and The Red Fez Connection being some of the bigger names in the United States at the moment. Perhaps some of the current leaders would be so kind as to take a moment to explain why they chose the name they did for their organizations. Or better yet- maybe some of the descendants of the old family heads that walk these streets can shed insight onto why the feel their ancestor used a ‘traditional’ or ‘non-traditional’ name. In the end, though, what I want to ask of you lot is this- is this simply a progression of the times? Are we becoming more ‘Americanized’ and forgetting about our roots? Is the name of an association just a name? Or does it mean that much more? |

The Captain would just like to applaud you on your choice of name, Mr. McTavish. You, unlike some people around here, choose to evolve as the rest of the world does. The sole reason people have problems with names like "Badass Inc.", "The Iguana Corporation", etc, is because they're too damn worried about keeping things like they were in the old days. Well guess what...the old days are done and gone, and they ain't coming back, so move on like the rest of us. There's nothing wrong with keeping a traditional name for your family/organization, but don't judge those who have chose to go in a different direction. They're bold enough to change as the world changes, so don't give em shit just because you won't move outta the dark ages. So in essence Mr. McTavish, The Captain feels that the people who go with non-traditional names, are the people who know that times change, and people should change with them. On the other hand, people who go with traditional names, aren't necessarily stuck in the dark ages, but more often than not they choose them because they dwell in the past and aren't ready to move into the future. It'll be the later group's ancestors you'll see in a year/two years, not the former. But...just think, as the years pass, the non-traditional names will become the traditional ones, and new names will start taking those places. Will The Captain, or anybody else still feel the same way when that time comes, if they're blessed enough to still be among the living? |

*Rochelle listens intently to the conversation that has her Boss pacing around the HQ* I think whoever you talked to had it all wrong. It has nothing to do with tradition. Italian? Haha, they aren't the only ones with traditions, you know. No, this is about two different kinds of names. You have family names, and you have business front names. Both are traditional in the mafia tradition. The family names are like those in Cathy Park's, Sal's, and Morety's families. A family comes together and they name themselves. Then you have the business front names, like Badass, Inc. and The Iguana Corporation. It's just as traditional for a mafia family to pose as a legitimate business. I think if you went outside of these two categories, only then would your name be nontraditional. I don't think any other category would fit with a mafia family, though. Changing with the times is fine, as long as those changes make sense. |

To me i think a name is a really big part of the crew, it helps make the family bond, and i think it helps choose who becomes part of our family. I'll admit that I usually would first try to gain the respect and membership of the crew which had the nice name or one which made me want to be apart of that family. I'm not one for Italian names to be honest. I think Badass Inc is the coolest name, on the other hand I think AA comes in second. I think what Cathy went with is the more smart and elegant name, maybe to attract only those who are high class and I think thats what the Italian names do as well. Wile that being said I think Badass and AA are both trying to attract much friendlier staff. Just what I think probably totally wrong. |
