Cunning's first lesson Started by: Cunning on Jul 30, '10 19:58

:Cunning was walking down the sidewalk in a daze, the words of his sponsor, crew leader, father, and other role models repeating in his head:  "You must support the family."  "Don't do anything to endanger the family."  "Family comes first."  Cunning was a man who had grown up relying on himself--doing things his own way.  Just the thought of relying on others emasculated him.  But he was new to the crime world, and Philadelphia was a dangerous city--much more dangerous than the wild of his rural upbringing.  He would have to learn to adjust his behavior.  He would have to learn to work as a team:

:There must be something that I can do to really impress the crew on my own, he thought.  I really want to make myself stand out.  He remembered what the more experienced gangsters had shown him; how to brandish his pistol like a snarling pit-bull in the faces of his victims.  How intimidation yields results that even direct action sometimes could not.  He decided to try something:

:Stepping quickly inside an art gallery, he approached the clerk:

"Guess what, chief.  It's time to cash out.  I'll be taking everything you've got in there," he said, gesturing to the cash register.  "So empty it out for me."

"Oh no." the clerk responded with some doubt in his eyes.  Though he stood slightly taller than Cunning, he was not as broad, and his voice made him sound less than half the size.  "I'm not falling for that again.  I just paid one of you goons a week ago.  Just get out of here before I call the cops."

:Cunning laughed and drew his weapon.  The clerk flinched when he spotted the barrel:

"Now I'm not going to ask you again, chief."  Cunning heard new confidence in his voice.  The clerk began to shake, not taking his eyes off the barrel which Cunning now waved in front of his face.

:The clerk opened the register and began piling the cash on the counter.  Cunning couldn't help but think about how right his mentors had been about intimidation, but how wrong they had been about the family aspect.  He may need them for protection from other crime families, but he would do just fine working on his own:

:As Cunning stepped forward to gather up some cash, he was hit hard from behind, and felt himself pitch forward, hitting the corner of the counter sharp and awkward across his shoulder and forehead.  Cunning's abrupt entrance had caused him to overlook the security guard, who now pinned his arms to his sides as his gun flew right over the counter, hitting the clerk in the gut and landing at his feet:

:With his head lowered, absorbing the clerk's angry words in shame as he watched his own weapon now waving in front of his own face, fear for the law or for physical harm was the farthest thing from his mind.  He realized that he would have to learn how to work as a team, here.  He would have to learn how to organize crimes properly and to cooperate with his family:

I have many strengths, he thought, but perhaps I can be more effective when alongside my comrades.  With their strengths added to my own, we can do big things.  I will shine brighter from within the collective flame of the group.

After busting Cunning out of jail, Dayman sits down with him at a local bar.

Listen i know you got balls, you have to, to try and rob an art gallery by yourself.  but you'll find that you'll have a lot more success, and money, by working with your family. If you would have let me know i would have been right there beside you and could have helped with that security guard. Then we would have made out with some serious loot.

Cunning and Dayman have a few more beers and discuss their plans for the next time they would enter that particular art gallery.

:Cunning laughs and picks his head up a little bit:

Yeah, I know it.  I should have known better than to tackle that place by myself, but I really wanted to prove myself on my own, you know?  I'll definitely get you and some of the others involved next time.  I've already got some things planned for how we can give that damned security guard and the sniveling clerk what-for next time.

:Cunning sips his beer before leaning in towards Dayman.  Their conversation becomes inaudible:

sounds like your learning fast. im not expert, but what ive learned is that to prove yourself to your family you have to prove yourself with your family.

Dayman and Cunning go back to drinking and planning their next heist.
