| The Role of the Snitch | Started by: Oliver_McTavish on Jan 02, '08 03:55 |

I believe it was Shakespeare, do correct me if I am wrong, that had written into one of his works the ever popular phrase ‘do not shoot the messenger’. Has it ever occurred to anyone how often, literally or figuratively, that this does happen? In our lifestyle it is highly likely that any information we receive is from an ‘associate’, that person more than often being from outside the family. We manage to protect our businesses, our ventures, valued members of our crews… and yet in the end, this person- this rat if you will- the one that risked their neck always ends up hunted down like some sort of primal instinct and punished for what they did; whether it be at the end of a bullet and a swim with da fishes or not is a different story. I always sort of end up shaking my head at said person’s funeral, wondering if it was really worth it or not. Through my time here I’ve come across tons of ‘snitches’, from both within my family reporting information outside and vice versa. I’ve witnessed many other transactions between Mafiosi, those that kill those that betray them and their family… and that reward on some level those that give them the information they need. It’s come to my attention that they are, whether we agree with them or not, an important role in ‘this thing of ours’. One that is certainly always looked down on in a bit of a murky light, but one that holds a large amount of weight nonetheless. So what I want to know is this: what is your stance? Is a snitch nothing more than a double-crossing-dirty-rat-bastard-disease that needs to be eliminated for eternity? Or are they the unsung heroes of the world we live in today? Do they really believe in some bigger cause than family? Or are they just being… well, a word I probably cannot repeat in public? Personally, the only snitches I have had to really deal with are the ones that attempt to somehow betray my own family in some way. In cases like that I have no problem sending said individuals to an eternal sleep. Yet in the history of my bloodline there have been some who swear by these people- finding them to be more helpful than problematic for their own business dealings. It almost makes me think- are there others out there who feel the same? Tell me, has one of your ancestors ever been a rat? Betrayed by one? Feel free to share your own opinions and stories here, I am merely trying to get a general consensus on one of the longest standing positions in the history of our ‘organization’. |

Sir I had a rat problem once. Here is how it laid out. I had just turned Boss and I was given the green flag to open my own family, Which I jumped at with all the fugure I could. It was a hard time in the game at that time. and there were bets open on the streets that I would not live through the night. Well I proved them all wrong, Not lacking in attempts though (5 people tried). What the amasing thing was when my time finally came 3 days later it turned out to be my old family Boss, I told me that he did not like the fact that I was more popular than he was. So while I was sleeping he snuck in my own town and capped me. If that is not a rat at his finest then nothing should ever be said about the rest of the problems that we all have come across. |

The Captain doesn't every snitch can be put into one category. As with everything else, it depends on the situation. Sometimes people are snitches to payback somebody for something done to an ancestor or friend, sometimes its done for profit, sometimes its done because they actually feel like they are doing good. One of The Captain's great great great, many times over, ancestors was a snitch, because the man he was snitching against, was seemingly unstoppable, and he felt if something wasn't done, no good could come to the community. A trap was set for him, from one of the very family heads, "working against the man" my ancestor was snitching on, and in the end he was killed. In essence, The Captain feels that in most cases, a snitch, snitches for his or her own personal reasons, and should be killed as soon as they are found. But in some cases, they truly are the unsung heroes, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be killed. They know what they are getting into, before they get into it and know they're probably going to be hunted down, and killed. |

| The difference between 'shooting the messenger' and 'shooting the rat' is that the messenger is a loyal member of his organisation. The messenger has been asked by his superiors to relay a message to you, and so, whatever the message may be, it is the superiors who are responsible. Even though the messenger should die for his loyalty to these insolent superiors, if one went about killing messengers, one would never be sent messengers and so would be more likely to be attacked by surprise. The rat, however, is someone who has brought you a message in betrayal of his superiors. No matter who those superiors are or what they've done, the act of betrayal is what means that rat should be hunted down and killed, lest he, or others in his example, commit these disloyal crimes again. | |

Sadly, I believe it's a given of our life that person A will coerce their old time friend into the life of crime, sending him to a potential rival to gain structure information and so forth. The fact that this is widespread practise, however, does not make it any more acceptable, at least not to me. Perhaps my sense of morality is twisted at the very least, given that I'm a criminal when all's said and done; but to me, snitches seem such an unsavoury and underhanded way to do business. "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." - Luke 6:31. As Keats has proved, I'm a bit of a fair weather Christian, but those guys sure did come up with some good quotes, eh? When snitches are dubbed "rats", I suppose that's a reference to the image of them scurrying around and so on; but I always imagine them as insignificant little creatures, with no conception of anything higher than themselves. They are never the unsung heroes, the do not have a side, they sit on the fence and ally themselves with whomever looks to be the strongest. They should never be lauded, but condemned. |

As much as we all hate rats, I think it would be foolish to overlook their significance. When you're in a position of power and someone from an opposing family comes to you with information, you don't lecture them on Omerta and send them packing. It's underhanded and it's deceitful, but it happens quite often in this world of ours whether we like it or not. Everyone lectures on loyalty and Omerta, but these principles are hard to come by these days. I'm sure people would love to blame it on the coffee shops, and I can see their argument. I think, though, that over time bloodlines become familiar with each other and will always have an affinity for the other--something that is likely exacerbated by the coffee shops, but not necessarily caused by them. For these reasons, it's important to not let sensitive information leave the inner-most circle of your upper structure. This is why ranking is difficult and why it's hard to earn the trust of your boss or his or her right hand. It's also why certain bloodlines are sometimes put into positions far above their rank. It all comes down to trust. |

Mr Oliver... No matter whatever they say about the Irish.... they ARE well read in the classics. You never cease to amaze me and show me that you are far more than the boorish lout you set out to be. Snitches are the bottom of the pit and they should be buried there. The question remains... What is a snitch. |

Well... Snitches are the lowest life forms on the Earth...when they are against you. But what about when a snitch comes to you about witnessing a murder of your own family member? Obviously, you are going to take their information as it is very important to you. Now, I know, they cannot be trusted whatsoever. But if one were to kill that rat, then what will happen the next time one of your family members goes down? No one will leak, or snitch rather, the information that one needs. So snitches are the lowest life forms on Earth... ...when they are against you. |

Jimmy thinks to himself then jots down the things that he thinks of. He does this so he doesn't forget important things. The reason for the mafiosi to go and tell family business is his or her own thing no one can really know why they betrayed their families trust or a long time friends trust. Either way they have shown that they can't be trusted nor do they have respect for the person which they received this information. No matter the reason or the fallout of the information which the person leaked there is only one destination for them, Death. |

I'm embarrassed to say that I ran to join this conversation, believing it was a discussion of Quidditch. *Tango grabs a Bludgers and goes in search of Harry* |

Quid Ditch, you say? Hmm, let me think... pondering, she suddenly brightens. OH WAIT!!! You mean one of those nasty rundown places, where you're constantly spending money on repairs and such only to find out the moment you fix one thing, five others break? You know, here in the good ole' U S of A we call that a money pit. But, if you're from overseas, I suppose a Quid Ditch could be the same thing. |

I don't think my ancestors have ever done it intentionally, although there was this one time... There was a war between two groups of people, most of his friends where in one group and one other friend was in the other group, he wrote down a bit of what his friends were saying and told the other friend, who then told the rest of the group he was with. This was years ago and it sent my ancestry line to leave the mafia for better things for a long time. Couldn't see anything like it ever to be repeated by me. Although I do believe there are many different cases and some are not supposed to turn out bad for the said "rat" and the other "rats" are those that just cant stop giving out the private information laid in front of them. Trust those that you give information too, thats the only way to increase the chances of this kind of thing happening. |

*Tango stares at Curly_Sue* I don't recall ever inviting you to my home, so I have no idea how you know so much about the dump, erm place. But Quidditch is the latest rage in sports my dear. You have Bludgers and Beaters and Keepers and Seekers, and of course the Snitch. And I assure you, I'm as American as baseball and apple pie old chap. Pip pip, tally ho. |

She looks horrified, her green eyes wide as she looks at Tango. Oh dear...nonono I didn't mean you live in such a mean hovel, I just had never heard of this Quidditch and was trying only to puzzle it out. A sport, you say? Is it, maybe, a card game? Why would you name a piece something as derogatory as "snitch"? The Snitch isn't a position, is it? I dont' know if I'd like to be called a Snitch in a game. Is it the type of game you can play the odds on? |

*Tango realizes that she's said too much* The rules of the game are extremely complicated by the standards of modern sports, and game play has been described as a cross between "cricket, soccer and hockey" But umm, yeah, we can play the odds. *Smiles sweetly* |

Prime dutch cheddar looks at the grave of his old friend Moneyrustler76 Sometimes the life of a snitch is disgraced by some but lauded by others. Cause and just may often become tainted across the bloodlines where the principals of loyalty and omerta are clouded by vengeance and desire. Perhaps the role of the snitch is not so clear afterall? Mozarrella man takes out a 5, scrunches it in his palm and smiles, good old Moneyrustler, a friend to all in need |
