| The makings of a leader | Started by: Penny_Lane on Jan 02, '08 22:00 |

A lovely young women gets out of a black car. Followed by two large men in suits, she approaches the podium. Clearing her throat, she awaits your attention. I am here today to discuss a subject that catches my interest, and I'm sure many others. There some of you out there that would love the chance to have a family of your own. But do you have what it takes? I want to ask you all, what does it take to be a crew leader? Or what exactly expected from you, before you can get auth? Are there certain qualities one must possess? Or things you must do to be considered? And should it be left to your family head to decide, or a collaboration of all the current leaders? Personally I think to be considered, you should be well known, show great leadership skills, and be very knowledgeable about how things work in our world. Street presence also seems to be a must, but how much do you really need? Sharing opinions and creating the occasional thread is always good, but how often is your presence required? I invite you all to share your opinion, especially the current leaders. What do you think the requirements of a CL should be? Thank you for your time. Penny flashes a smile, and walks back to her car. |

ExternalLink hears the young woman on the podium and steps out of the coffee shop where he was munching on a glazed donut To be a Crew Leader huh? ExternalLink grins I'm not sure if there is a specific Qualification to become a Crew Leader. Unlike most, I don't feel a huge street presence is necessary. Granted, it is great to hear from the Leaders once in a while, but I think street presence has more to do with the Family members than the Leader's themselves. I think being a Crew leader you must be able to accomplish the following: Activity: I notice that it is common for someone as a first crew leader to disappear for lengths of times, or their overall activity in the business drops. I don't understand it, if they can work hard for their Family prior to the title, why such the sudden change? Being a CL is no time to get comfortable, if anything it should be a larger reason for more work. Listen: A good lump sum of Mafioso don't listen to their affiliates. They stick with the few they trust. Granted, you have to pick those you can trust for obvious reasons, but when Family members contact you about concerns or what not, open your ears and give them a chance. Don't blow off. They work just as hard as you, and most of the time it's something useful regardless of how it comes across. Selfishness: Becoming a Family head can change things dramatically. Mafioso's who have yet to have the honor don't understand the work and dedication that goes into it, therefore they are only concerned about Number one (Themselves). They forget the Family is what makes them, not Vice Versa. Dedicate your time to your family, trust me you will receive better rewards for doing so. Diplomacy: A Family head should always have good diplomatic reasoning. To be Family head with no awareness or lack the abilities to talk to other Crew leaders with respect and business like demeanor then you will get no where. Mafia Knowledge: This is a must, how can they run a Family or provide their Family with assistance if they themselves do not have a complete understanding. A Back Bone: That's right I said it. Grow a back bone before asking for Auth. Your Family works hard day in and day out. They put their lives on the line for you everyday, you should be able to do the same. Stand up for what you believe is right, if someone says no, do not back down. You will be viewed as a higher authority figure if you don't let other Mafioso boss you around. With that said I think I have covered the major Categories in my opinion. If you possess the qualities and you work hard to achieve your Goals you'll be granted your reward. Now if you get mad because you have been turned down for Auth, or that you have been told you are lacking in an area that I mentioned above. Well then maybe it's time to reflect for a minute and think, "Am I really ready?" With Deepest regards, *EL* ExternalLink then returns to his coffee shop and donut |

You also need to know when not to set some random as your right hand who is likely to HQ your entire crew in 4.6 seconds... A minor qualm some might say but ExternalLink might disagree... |

That was brought into this Conversation how? I think the young lady was asking for Mature and helpful opinions, not something that happened years ago with nothing relative to this debate. |

It has actually happened on numerous occassions recently so although I'm sure you would like the criminal world to revolve around you I was merely referring to a more minor yet instrumental point which you failed to mention. Less sensitivity please, we aren't playing with toys. |

This is a time honored debate. One of my favorites, because we know that in all honesty anyone can be a Family Leader, unfortunately not all of us are good at it. The obvious skill set for a leader should be (in no particular order) 1) The ability to put together a complete thought. This has actually been an issue for me as sometimes the emotion takes over and my thoughts are sometimes just crazy rambles that make sense to only me, but if you plan out what you want to say and make it understandable then you are doing good. (Also typing things like "wat" "idk" "pls" or anything to the sort, not only should you NEVER be considered but you should die just out of principle) 2) Be strong. If you can't be physically strong then be mentally strong, no one has to know you are weak, make them think you are strong. If anyone remembers the old time leader Uncle Nicky, he was weak, though people thought he was strong. "Surely he gets shot at at least once a day" in actuality it was only a few times...and rumored that he was killed by someone who couldn't hit the water if he fell out of a boat. 3) The ability delegate tasks. This one is tricky, anyone can delegate, but you have to be sure you are choosing someone with the wit to complete these tasks without getting you killed or making you look like an idiot. ALSO YOU CAN DELEGATE JOBS, BUT YOU CAN'T DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITY. 4) The Ability to listen. Another tricky one, some folks like to play the "He's a puppet" card, and a lot of the time this does happen. Maybe a Boss new to the job gets scared they are going to make the wrong choice, or maybe they don't want to make the choice, so a few people that think they know how to run a family begin making the choices for their boss..always bad news...always. I'm not saying having a family adviser is a bad idea, on the contrary, I think its a great idea, but you have to understand that they are your ADVISER'S they give advise and you make the decision yourself. 5) Picking a good RHM. You may be everyones best friend and the perfect Leader, but if you have a RHM thats a complete ASS, then you are going to get snuffed out eventually. Just because she takes her shirt off for you, or just because you hang out on the weekends doesn't mean this person is qualified to RUN YOUR FAMILY WHEN YOU ARE AWAY. Keep that in mind when you choose your RHM, they will be running your family. No matter how much the rest of the world loves you, if they hate your RHM because he/she is an idiot and can't adhere to the above three points, eventually they will start to question you abilities. There are more qualities, but I think this is enough to get started. What do you think? |

This topic does indeed interest The Captain. He feels that there is no one perfect leader. Different people are good leaders for different reasons. You got your leaders who can get along with other leaders, making them well-liked and long-lived. Others rule with an iron fist, and whereas they may not be liked, they inspire a sense of fear into everybody else, forcing respect out of them. There are too many types of leaders for The Captain to go through, so he'll just cut right to the type of leader he admires, and would like to be like. The Captain feels that the best type of leader, is one who has Charisma. You don't what it is about them, but you like them, even when they do something stupid. He admires the type of leader who gets along with everybody, from the little people in his family, to the big people in his family, to the people in other families, but also knows when to tell somebody about themselves, if they need it. If The Captain is ever blessed with a family of his own, this is the type of leader he would strive to be. |

| The Captain forgot to mention one very important thing. He feels that a good leader, doesn't need to be skilled in every, or in some cases, anything. As long as that leader surrounds themselves with the right people who better know what they're doing, they can still be a successful leader. A sign of a great leader, is not being afraid to admit when you don't know something, and find somebody to help you with it. | |

To aspire to be a crewleader is both shallow and selfish. Just serve your family, should the opportunity come your way, and if its deserved, it'll come. Penny, use spellcheck ffs! |

| Frankie doll, I do use spell check. Kindly wipes the drool from his face, and suppresses the urge to kick him. And isn't it time for your nap? Penny laughs, and quickly moves away. | |

Street presence is one thing, obviously the guys gotta know you're out there, listening. Not just to them, but to what others are saying. Someone who is Authed is usually someone that The Commission knows others will follow, lay down the rules, lay down discipline and who knows how to talk to people, regardless of their background. Someone to be respect and feared at the same time. If you can't talk to people, let them know they have your support, you won't last long. Don't get greedy, give your guys freedom but not too much freedom. My opinion, but what do I know? Giovanni goes back to eating his Spaghetti |
