The Vice and The Grind (RP) Started by: Dante_Aprile on Jan 04, '08 00:35
It's 3am in New York city. The time of night were the only people out are the sharks and the poor shlubs who get bitten.

Tonight, I left my fin at home...

Sitting at a bar with my head in my hands, I replay the night over and over again. The feel of the felt, the turn of the card, and the sudden rush of confidence that left my body.

I never was good at anything. Couldn't fight. Couldn't steal. Couldn't even shake down a retirement home if I wanted to. So there I sat, night after night, grinding out c-notes one by one.

The grind was a simple enough plan. You'd play a low bet over and over again and, eventually, the odds worked in your favor. If you had too many bad hands in a row, statistically you were bound to catch a steady stream of hot cards eventually, so you'd double the bet after each loss, then go back to the low bet...back to the grind. But every now and then, I'd get so deep in debt that it took a massive bet just to break even. Every time I got close to the big numbers it made me nervous. And every time I'd feel pride creep up on me. Damn you, pride.

So that's how I got here. I listened to the wrong shoulder and took a big bet when I didn't need to. I knew before the cards were flipped that I lost my whole stack. I sat and watched as my pile of chips drug across the table away from me. It took all I had in me just to keep from reaching out and grabbing them from the dealer.

So now I order another shot and sulk. I can't go back to the grind. I just can't. There's gotta be another way to make a buck in this town. I didn't even need steady work. In fact, I loathed the idea of grinding any job. Of course that's what got me here in the first place. I needed an angle. I couldn't rely on luck. I needed smarts. Unfortunately, smarts Isn't something that I have.

As I continue to nurse my trouble via the bottle, a stranger sat next to me. I didn't know it then, but my "angle" had just sat down.
Report Post Tip
I sit down next to the man; the man is unknowing however of the proposition I had in store for him. All I had to ask is a couple questions to the guy, who I say looks like he has been to hell and back. I am wondering how ever if I should ask this question outside. No matter...

Sir, You look like you are in need of money and at the moment I have a job to do which requires me to infiltrate a warehouse but I need a partner to do it for any hope of success. Do you wish to help me out? It pays very well and you will find my employer is very generous.
Report Post Tip
I flinch at first, caught off guard by the stranger. How the hell does he know I'm broke? Or does he? Maybe this is just a con. Maybe this is just a fella who gets his kicks outta hounding the local late night spots looking for the newest freshest meat. Maybe he intends to brings me to a back alley and leave me beaten and broken. Maybe I could tell him to piss off and finish my drink...

Then again...maybe I don't have a choice. I down the shot in front of me and turn to the stranger.

You seem awfully trustworthy for a guy looking to pull a job this late at night. What's the angle?
Report Post Tip
Angle? Maybe he knows how the buisness works. Maybe he is just not interested and thinks I'm playing a game with his mind and life. To many maybes. I need to be certain this man will accept this job either willingly or with a barrel staring down his throat. This job does pay well for me and my partner in this crime even though the only real catch is his life or his freedom if the cops come. Should I be straight foward? To hell with the plan the boss had...

A job that pays this well does have its angles, then again the pay is worth it.

This guy must not have any freinds that care aobut him or family so I'm sure if he does die that he will be a forgotten memory and just a whisper in the wind.

The angle is that if your dumber than a pile of bricks that you'll die or end up in jail. If you goto jail however; my family will break you out within the week. With this job you will join the most powerful crime syndicate in the whole damn city. You will become a man respected, feared, admired, loathed, and with riches you could never imagine.

Usually that speech works everytime, so hopefully the man will not think twice and acept the offer.
Report Post Tip
The man's offer sounds flowery, but promising. Still, play your cards close to your chest, Dante. Get ready for the play and keep em on the line.

Throw in a bridge and a couple of unicorns and you've got a full pitch there, pal.

Clearly, the sarcasm was detected. Still, the guy hadn't walked out on me or hit me. Let's see where this goes.

Alright, friend. Let's go for a walk as you give me the details.

I signal for the bartender and drop my last bill on the bar. I stand up from the bar, straighten my jacket and tie, and reset my hat.
Report Post Tip
Close one...Maybe to close? This man has second thoughts which just seem to be a bad sign to me. Maybe he'll ditch me half way through? Maybe I need to stop listening to the Radio?

A walk would be much to get out for "the walls have ears".

I quickly get up and get out onto the street. How can I put this mission into words? I'll wing it!

I have a question to ask you first though. Have you ever shot a gun before? I don't mean no little BB gun, I mean a rifle, pistol, or even stabbed any one? If not then we might need to go to the shooting range first to help you learn the stuff you'll need to know before going on this adventure.

Winging it works lovely! I should try it more often. The time is 10:00 PM and I need to steal the shipment at 5:00 AM. Between that time we could practice his shooting prolly along with debreif him. That man is crazy as well "Throw in a bridge and a couple of unicorns and you've got a full pitch there, pal" I feel this man may have had a little to much to drink to even aim straight!
Report Post Tip
Although his posture the two men walking in front of him have no idea whatsoever that they are being followed and that the man behind them is overhearing their conversation. As he tries to follow them without being noticed he sinks away in his thoughts.....shooting, guess this world is still filled with trigger happy people. Where was the time that the gun was the final solution, thats words would be almost as good as a pistol down someone's throat. As he walks along he overhears that they are talking about a heist and the possibility about a heist. He clears his throat and get's ready to be facing two angry men

Dear sirs, forgive me for being so rude, but since it's kinda quiet on the street I couldn't neglect the chance of overhearing your conversation. I hear you want to do a heist on a wearhouse. You won't be pulling a heist on the wearhouse on pacific street 23232, now would you? I know some weapons are being delivered at that address. Since I'm low on cash I could need some quick bucks. You, by any chance, need another person to bring this heist to a good success?

As he nervously awaits an answer he lits up a sigarette and stares the two the men right in the eyse
Report Post Tip
I got startled and almost shot the poor guy when he finished his words. I'm a bit jumpy. I guess one more man to use...I mean be partners with will be ok.

Considered yourself hired. Also yes that is the adress we will be robbing tonight. I'm telling you know though, not as courtesy, but as a warning. If you try to double cross or even flinch in the line of danger I will shoot you myself! I will not even hesitate; if i do though it is only to laugh. Now then you just follow where we lead you and quit eavesdropping on conversations. It's a bad habit!

That outa scare him into not running away. I almost bursted out laughing on my serious part. Luckily for me taht guy doesn't and isn't to much harm to us but I guess we could use his body as a shield in enemy fire.Nah! That'd be a waste to there amunition. I crack myself up! Now though we have to get going to the shooting range.
Report Post Tip
24 Hours ago, I was a failed gambler and a drunk. Now, I'm standing in the street with two strangers talking about guns and knives, heists and more guns. A few more hours of this, and I'll start missing the tables. Nevertheless, I seem to be doing alright keeping my mouth shut. As long as I keep my mouth shut, I should be able to walk away from this with my head still attached, and with all it's pieces still intact.

Well this is turning out to be a fine night. Look at us. Three regular cowboys looking for a train to heist. Things are looking shaky so I'll just put it all on the table...

...keep your mouth shut, stupid...

So here's what we got. You got this inside tip about a warehouse trading guns tonight and you wanna make the load a little lighter. Perhaps you want to turn a profit. Or perhaps you want to keep the take yourself. Either way you figure it's gonna require more muscle so you hit the bars in the late hours of the night looking for bodies and you find me. Then we find out that the "inside tip" you got ain't all that inside seeing as how the only other guy out tonight not only knows about the deal tonight, but he wants to rack the place up too. Am I missing anything? No? Good.

So here we are, like I said. There's a good chance that if the two of you know about this, then there's more that know. And the more that know mean the more danger it'll be for me. Sorry boys, but this is a hand I don't think I'm all that keen on playing.

And to answer your question, yes I've fired a piece in my day, but that doesn't mean that I want to do it again.

Yeah, great way to keep your mouth shut...
Report Post Tip
As his nerves start to calm down due to the normal respons which was against all expectations. He listens to what the man has to say, interrupting someone has always been against his believes. He lits up a sigarette while listening

Well, I understand your motives, but to my knowledge, not that many people know of it. Since my source, which is a top hand source, just heared it today, I dont think too many mobsters will be dealing this heist this week.

So my advice, if the other man agrees on it, is that we go in this evening. Let's have the element of suprise on our side and let's beat the others to the punch. You tell me about a hand you don't want to play, since I know the other man is a respected mafioso and since you are talking to him about a heist, or at least thinking about it, that tells me you are in money problems. No offence, but to me you don't look like a man, although perhaps not too sober, that joins into this kind of business without a good reason.

Of course it will remain your decision, but I think we have a good chance of succeeding if we go tonight or perhaps tomorrow.
Report Post Tip
That noe guy is about to get a boot up his ass! Fairly soon by the likes of it. Oh I forgot to ask something as well.

What are all your names? Mine is Martin

Now i can stop saying person.

Were going to the warehouse at 1:00 as planned byt my boss. We might have back up coming or we are the back up. First lets blow off a few rounds at the shooting range where you will have to start practicing Aiming, the both of you. I can't have two dead weights and dead shots. So off the practice we go!

I'm sounding a bit jolly about this. In a minute I'll be screaming HO HO HO. Lets see, can I pull something other, like a speech outta my ass. Nope I'm shit free. Wait...

The final pay as well is 300,000 dollars. Not pesos, freancs, pounds, but dollars. We are being paid by some foreign diplomat. I believe the weopons are fromhis country and that he does not want word to get out and the US not to trust them. Damn politics! Anyway, per man we kill we'll get a 1,000 dollar bonus. On a more cheerful note we have until 1:00 and it is 10:30 at the moment.

I then kept on walking and the shooting range was in sight. I walked in; I hope the other guys did the same. If not, then I'm stuck with no workforce. I better wait here.
