Having loyal employees is at the core of a successful business the best bosses usually don't get the job done alone but have a talented group of guys around them who know how to take care of business. Finding talent is hard enough, but culturing a sense of loyalty is more difficult, especially when other bosses might want to skim the cream from another crew. Everyone wants earners, guys who worry about the bottom line instead of the clock, so figuring out a way to keep them dedicated means the difference between success and failure. The grunts who are only looking for a paycheck, love them or hate them, need to be convinced that a boss is worth working for, otherwise they can move on; the world always has a high demand for babbos. The cardinal rule of building loyalty is to give your people something worth taking pride in. Loyalty does not come in short gains or get rich quick schemes but only through a lasting effort and ongoing concern for the organization, starting at the top. As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day, meaning it took generations of people working toward the same goal: To build the greatest empire ever known to man. It means that the citizens who created such greatness did not remain loyal only through the good times, but kept trudging on through the lowest of the lows. Everyone wants a raise in wages, but money by itself doesn't build loyalty. There must be a path for a man to follow, a height that a man can climb to through his own hard work. Some guy's dreams are bigger than others, but even those happy in the middle need to have something to roll out of bed for, such as promotions and more responsibility. Some people who make it to the top have no business being there. Plenty of idiot nephews of bosses have given me orders over the years, but their failure to lead usually makes itself known when a job goes bust. Those that don't keep their dollars straight lose respect quickly, and when respect dies, so does loyalty. For those that believe in the business, nothing is more insulting than loose purse strings. Carelessness can get you killed. |
