Daughter of the Night Started by: Vesper on Oct 15, '17 17:21

Vesper walked slowly along the Navy Pier, listening to the music emanating from a nearby stage and enjoying the anonymity of the crowd. She rested against a rail and looked out at the water, thinking of how much life had changed for her in the past couple weeks.

A month ago, her father had been alive. William Lamoureux was not a rich man, but he was a good one. His life revolved around his daughter. During the day time he would sleep, while his daughter would read and dance with Madame Maguerite next door. In the evening, William would go to work. He was a security guard who alternated between several different warehouses and businesses. Madame Maguerite had to work at night as well, so little Selene Lamoureux would go with her father to work. There were only two rules for her: 1) Always be within earshot, able to answer her father's whistle with a whistle of her own to let him know she was okay. 2) Never be seen by anyone, so her father did not lose his job. Selene was very good at both of these things.

She excelled at blending into the shadows, finding places that other eyes would miss. While her father patrolled, she would follow him around through the shadows. Sometimes she'd even catch a trespasser and whistle twice from a safe place. When her father sat in his chair, she would read or practice her dancing. It was unconventional, but there are many, many worse ways for a girl to grow up. As she got older, Selene would occasionally still tag along and keep him company.

But her adulthood had really began two weeks before, when her father had collapsed on the job. It was a heart attack, and despite the screams of the young woman to the empty warehouse, he was gone far, far beyond a doctor's care. The next few days were a blur. The shuffling condolences of the rest of the tenement building, along with a few leering glances from men who'd been deterred by the presence of her father. The dark alleys. The stolen meals- until one lucky baker happened to notice the silhouette back-lit by car headlights and caught her. The prison, where a powerful man had helped her escape, and the church where she'd met that man again. Where she'd chosen her new name after evening prayers.

Cesare Torretta said that he would have use for a thief. She supposed that that was what she was now. The opposite of her father, in some ways, but she doubted he'd mind. In some ways, she was still the same little girl, hiding in the shadows and waiting for her father's footsteps to start again.

Selene- no, Vesper- smiled down at the water and wiped away a tear. It was time to go to work. With a few steps, she vanished into the crowd.
