Everyone wants to be remembered. Everyone wants to claim some significant piece of history as their own. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as that. I remember when I used to clean the shit off the mob bosses shoes. Now look at me, eh? I'm considered quite powerful by some. I've got a basic control of Las Vegas, for fucks sake. Again, unfortunately for me, it doesn't mean shit. I can't even remember the names of the guys who ran Vegas before me, other than Ron Mexico of course, the guy who catapulted me into my position. They've all fallen into obscurity because they didn't do anything worth remembering.

I can't say I'm much of a star lately, despite my outrageous good looks. Hell, I've spent the past week out of touch, trying to renew my gambling licenses, arranging import deals of some...shall we say 'delicate' products, and I'll tell you, I know people are talking. Just who the hell is Alfieri?, they ask. I'm falling into fucking insignificance around here and I'm not liking it. I've always seen myself as more of the reserved type when it came to public appearances. I was never the guy who enjoyed bringing attention to myself. I mean, fuck, the feds could be anywhere these days, right?

I don't know about you but I'm uneasy with people I don't know very well. Some say I'm not sociable. I'm not sure. I can't say I trust more than a handful of people. Even less, maybe. But I'm a business man. Isn't that necessary? Vulnerability is the last fucking thing I need. It's common sense that I shouldn't let people near my more delicate matters.

Right, so I've not got much going for me so far. I don't enjoy public exposure as much as some. I'm not as popular throughout this thing of ours as some people are. I've got quite a decent group of guys though. My organisation is booming. Earnings are higher and increasing, there has been little to no trouble from my guys, and we've managed to keep a pretty steady go at it. Everybody's content. Does the public care? No. Not really.

That's why most of the leaders before me fell into the abyss of insignificance. That's why many of the crewleaders we see now and in the future will fall into the dreadful depths of nothingness. I think of it like a wide river. On one side is fame, glory and success. On the other is failure. A crewleader is placed in the middle of the river, with the current flowing towards failure and a vessel bound to sink. It's now up to the individual to defy the expectations.

The "best" leaders of the past are all those who have made their exploits known to the public. History has proven that public relations is important. Look at the great Godmother Anita. As much as Anita and Ulysses were surrounded in conflict constantly, they were able to consistently manoeuvre the public into their mind set, something my great grandfather very much admired. Whatever it was that happened, their side of the affair was always brought forward and done so with eloquence unmatched and the speaking skills to craft a case of which the public could relate with.

But what of a man like me? I'm just an Italian man who got lucky and was at the right place at the right time. I've not grown up with the ability to craft something out of nothing. Stick me in a seemingly hopeless situation and the best I've got is a sound common sense. Unlike some of the greats, the best I can do is tell it how it is and how I see it, rather then interpret how I think it should be said. That's not me.

I was born to obscurity. I'm from a peasant family, my education is from the streets and not the schools, and I'll be honest, I'm not above most of the street schmucks these days in my actions. I do what I need to in order to get by. I've got a content crew back in Vegas and I've got a couple friends who I trust with my life. Now all I need to do is figure out how to be more, y'know?

Back when I was still a nobody, I yearned to be given the chance to prove myself. I did all that I could to get to where I am today. But now here I am, without a clue of where to go next. I've fallen to the same trap that so many have. I spent weeks gearing up for this, preparing, anxious, and then when blessed with the opportunity I realize how severely lacking I was of one fundamental element. Knowledge. Not intelligence. I'm not stupid. Knowledge of this thing of ours. Sure, we have respect, honor, omerta, whatever. I don't mean that. I mean a sense of direction, a poise that so few possess. Until I find it, I am stuck on the level of all those leaders that have perished over the years.

As you can tell, I did a bit of thinking. I tried to figure out what exactly was marring my outlook on the life I currently lead. Why am I so strained for inspiration? What changed in me from the eager youngster to the unnaturally cynical business man? I'll continue searching for that golden ticket. I'll find a muse and I'll squeeze it for all it's worth. If I remain like this forever, the undertow is sure to wash me away.

I almost love this man.

Don't lie of course you love him LOL

Zig-Zag looks at the two school girls... WAIT! Those aren't school girls!

Stop your giggling and pinning over Alfieri, for god sake.

You two, you know what I think when I read this memo? I think the man's got himself a goal, and he's chasing it. I think more bloody power to him, and I wish him the best of luck. The man is intelligent, and he has a dream, I'd just love to see him get there, I really would.

Zig-Zag folds the memo up and sticks it in his pocket, before walking away.

The Captain isn't just saying this because Alfieri is his boss, (although, surely The Captain's due for Wise Guy wink wink) but he deserves all the praise in the world. As Alfieri said himself, he was just a lucky man, in the right place, at the right time and he's running with it. Not many would accept such a burden without some preparation for it, but this man did and he's doing a brilliant job.

The Captain would also like to praise Alfieri on his admittance of wanting to be remembered. Most leaders nowadays just say they do what they can for their family, they don't care if they're remembered, etc. Come on...what do most of us really want? We want to be great today, and even greater tomorrow. We wish for immortality, but the closest we're gonna get to it, is to be remembered after our deaths.

Anyway, The Captain is getting off topic. He'd just like to say...Alfieri, our bloodlines have known each other for a long time now, and every one of your ancestors has always been a good friend to every one of mine, and I'd like to thank you for that. If The Captain has any say in it, you will be remembered for all time, as one of the best.

Remembrance is a very fickle mistress.

As the small dog who wees in the corner can attest, we are far too often remembered for the things we did wrong, than for the things we did right. The cornerstone of positive remembrance is goal-setting, unwavering dedication, and vision, all of which I know you possess, Alfieri.

You were given Iguana with a set of shoes to fill, a task which you've already strategically laid out and begun executing. I look forward to following you wherever those shoes may lead.

To be honest Alfieri, i don't think anybody really knows how to become successful until they already have done, and even then they don't know what they did right, although they stick at it because they know there doing the right thing. Just give it your best shot, whats the worst possible outcome? - Someone sending you a death threat and you having to move to France.

yes, I think alfieri's come a long way...

And deserves to be on the top.

My elder brother, whom you just accepted, relates to me that he is very honored to work with you.

Many valid points in this memo, eveyones wants to be remembered but as Alfieri says it isn't just about running a family you have to do something to be remembered for. Wise words Alfieri speaks!

Keith, the purpose of this wasn't to try to figure a means of success but rather to reflect on a bit of human nature in relation to how I percieve things happening to me at the moment and about inspiration to be more.

Zig-Zag walks over to Alfieri

Well, mate, you've done a good job so far. You've got the head for it, so run with it. It is human nature that we all want to succeed, and, again, be remembered, I'd place my bet on that's why half of us get into this thing in the first place.
