Sue jumped as if she'd been stung, and indeed she had by his very nonchalance.

Ah...well there's not much to tell Nikki, really. He was a scrawny kid, and the boys knew better than to hit a girl. I had an advantage, that's all.

She sipped her tea to stop her voice from trembling, wincing at the lame excuse. Nikki was family... why didn't she just come clean?
Report Post Tip
It seemed such a short answer from Sue, who had always been more than forthcoming with gossip, news, and even idle chatter. In fact, it seemed quite odd that she would not spill every juicy detail instead of sitting there sipping her tea. It worried Nikki.

Is everything alright, Sue?
Report Post Tip
Her concience stung her as she smiled falsely at her friend.

I'm fine, Nikki...so Gabe's the guy that beat out the inevitable rush of men at your door, eh? How did you meet him? Is he serious? Are you serious? Are you guys making plans I should know about?

She hoped her effusive bubbling diverted her friend's thoughts, then nonchalantly threw a bomb out in front of her.

You know what his family's into, right? I mean besides the wine and all that.

She eyed Nikki carefully.
Report Post Tip
Nikki smiled, as it now all made sense. Sue knew about Gabe's double dealings and was erring on the side of caution for her dear friend. It made Nikki cherish even more the relationship that she and Sue had always shared; Nikki usually being the one always waiting for Sue's advice. Of course she knew about the familial dealings, and soon Sue would understand that Nikki was not as naive as she used to be.

Just as she parted her lips to respond however, the commotion from the gathering in the plaza had reached a fever pitch. Several diners had stopped their midday meal to look at what appeared to be a heated fight.

Heathens...

Nikki uttered under her breath, but all the same, she turned her neck to see the ongoing altercation. Raised voices all around, including the increased din at the cafe captivated her complete attention. She didn't notice the waiter returning to the table.
Report Post Tip
Something made the back of Sue's neck crawl...her mother'd always told her to go with her gut; instinct would save her ass more than even common sense a lot of the time, especially with what she was into nowadays. She followed Nikki's gaze, her eyes narrowed to slits as she attempted to see what the fight was about without looking like a gawker.

She stifled a tiny scream as the waiter materialized, seemingly out of thin air.
Report Post Tip
"Miss Phoenix, there's been a problem. A Mr. Lazloo Alfieri is on the phone for you. If you'll just follow me."

Nikki turned around to see the waiter in his khaki slacks and polo shirt. At the mention of Alfieri's name she nodded, though her face was clouded with concern. Lazloo never contacted her on her days off. It had been their agreement from the onset. Nikki had enough time managing her working days, and until this time he'd always respected her wishes. This breach was only evidence that something was desperately wrong.

Nikki rose and put her napkin on the table, brushing her dress to smooth out any wrinkles. She reached for her purse and turned to Sue.

I'll be right back, hon. Just a bit of business to sort out.

She nodded to the altercation and smiled.

A blow by blow when I return though.

Turning, Nikki slowly followed the waiter through the thickening crowd.
Report Post Tip
Sue recognized the name instantly, and wondered what the hell the boss was calling on an off day for. Nikki had told her how great he was because of the fact that he DIDN'T call her on her days off. Sue motioned to the waiter. When he returned, she nodded toward the fight.

So, what's going on there?

The waiter smiled, but shrugged.

Sometimes it happens, miss. Would you like a dessert? The cook's got a speciality that's enough to make you think you're in heaven!

Sue chuckled and nodded, deciding to go for the dessert. It'd give her something to occupy her as the fight continued and she waited for Nikki to return.

Since the banquet night at the Wilkeshire, her mind had been playing weird tricks on her and as Nikki passed by one of the only people in the cafe not watching the altercation in the streets, she felt his eyes on her above the newspaper he held in front of his face. Delusional, she thought to herself, as she followed the waiter inside the small cafe. The building itself was minuscule, calling for all seating to be outside.

"Mr. Alfieri asked that the phone be taken in a private room. Just this way, Miss Phoenix."

Nikki followed the man through a door just inside the building, through a hallway that didn't look to be part of the cafe at all. The decorating was different, and it had the slight odor of refuse and mold. At the end of the hall the gentleman held open the door and Nikki looked inside. She saw nothing, except for the darkness of the space.

Is there a lightswitch?

Nikki felt around on the wall, but the moment she put one foot inside to get a better feel, she felt something hard hit the base of her skull. First everything went very hot, and then very dark, as if the room had swallowed her consciousness.

From behind the news paper BunnyBoy was listening to the whole conversation wondering if anything would be useful for later.

Hello? Hello? Operator?

Gabriello pressed the hook of the telephone repeatedly, having lost the connection with the person on the other end of the line. He hadn't recognized the number on the note, but that wasn't unusual in his line of work. Strangely, when he'd dialed the number, someone picked up, but said nothing. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a few people from the cafe getting up to stare out the window. That sent a chill down his spine- something wasn't right. He didn't know what, but it was enough for him to drop the receiver and hurry toward the outside table.

Sue, what's going on? Where's Nikki?

He kept looking over where the commotion was, trying to see what was happening, then glancing back at the door of the cafe

Jimmy not wanting to be seen at the site of the newest crime to hit the streets watched from a distance,as the crowd gathered around the body,Jimmy couldn't see anyone he recognized that could have been involved.

Hmmm, maybe this was just something some random street thug did? I need a drink and a bite to eat.

Looking across the street he seen a nice looking cafe that he would hit up.

Theres the place I suppose.

Jimmy walks by the windows and glances at the faces against the windows staring at the scene across the street. Entering the place he looks around to see if the place suited him or not. A waitress approaches.

"Will it be a booth or table, sir?"

Booth would be great one against a back wall if possible.

"I do have one available right this way, please.

Jimmy was always aware of what was going on around him but having a wall at his back when possible made it easier for him to let down his guard a bit. While walking to his booth Jimmy spots someone who looks kinda familiar but he isn't sure if he knows them for sure or not. So he just nods has he passes.

Thanks doll, you've been a peach. I'll have a glass of water please.

Sue jumps with a start, coming out of her stargazing reverie at the panic in Gabe's voice.

What? She had a call from the boss, Gabe...I don't know where she went but the waiter...wait...where'd that waiter go?

Sue's heart sinks into her stomach and a sickly feeling comes over her. SHe hadn't thought anything of the unfamiliar waiter giving Nikki the message about the phone call but now she wondered if there was more to it than just staffing issues.

Gabe..I don't see the waiter that gave her the message anywhere...

Howard sat, waiting, watching for his moment to approach,he placed down his newspaper, drunk the last of his tea, brushed himself down and headed over to towards the comotion

Hello Sue, I don't think you know me.... but I work for Iguana Corp and i have seen you around.

What the hell is going on here? Also have been keeping you an eye on you and Nikki as you sat here, who was the guy that Nikki went with....Im pretty sure he wasnt a waiter,he had the same clothes but I noticed his hands were greasy and he had no name tag...Is she ok?

Howard was now worrying where has Nikki gone...
Report Post Tip
Gabe barely heard Howard introduce himself before he had flown back into the cafe. He grabbed the first waiter he saw by the collar with fire in his eyes

Where is your private phone!?

The waiter stammered and sputtered

"W..we don't h-h-have one, sir."

Literally throwing the waiter aside, Gabriello went to the back of the cafe, pushing people and objects out of his way. He stormed through the kitchen

Nikki! Nikki? Babe?

The next path he blazed was to the hallway where there was only a broom closet and a loading dock from the back of the restaurant. Gabe stopped and looked around outside from the dock. There was a strange smell in the air- like burnt rubber. He looked down and saw tire treads laid on the cement. Muttering a string of curses under his breath, he hopped off the dock and ran like hell around the building to the front of the cafe. He grabbed Sue's arm and started to pull her from her chair

We gotta get out of here- Nikki's gone.

He looked warily at the new gentleman standing at the table

Who are you?
Report Post Tip
Howard assumes he is referring to him

Hello, Gabe, I am Howard I work with Nikki who i presume you are seeing...?

I came over when i saw the comotion from over the road at the Cafe over the road, I was just saying to Sue how i do not think the person Nikki went into the back with was a waiter...

Is there a back door to this place?

Howard could hear a muffled noise but assumed it was his immagination
Report Post Tip
The queasy feeling intensifies as Howard's words sink in. Damnit how could she be so stupid!

Damnit...no I didn't see that Howard...shit she's in serious trouble.

Gabe! Do you have a car? Howard! Can you get a hold of the boss and tell him something bad's happened and see if he can call in some favors to see what's going on? I'll go check with the Maitre'D and see what he has to say.

True anger darkens her tone.

God Himself better help those responsible out on this one, or they're not gonna make it.

She storms off to check with the headwaiter about his staff.

Somewhere inbetween consciousness and dreamless sleep Nikki heard rumbling sounds and the uneven vibration of the floor beneath her. When she was finally able to open her eyes, she saw only darkness and felt a throbbing on the back of her head. Holding her hands in front of her she was able to feel for a wall to her right and behind her, but to her left and in front of her was just empty darkness. She couldn't be sure, but it felt as though she were in the back of a larger truck. As if to confirm her deduction, the room seemed to bounce as if hitting a pothole, causing Nikki's head to snap back and strike the wall. The darkness swallowed her once again.

Gabe pulled his keys from his pocket and nodded

My car is a few blocks down. Go talk to the guy and see if he knows anything, then meet me outside. Howard, come with us, if you can. We're going to need as much help as we can get.

He took off like a shot down the street and hopped into his car. Not obeying any traffic laws, he sped up the street to the cafe and squealed to a stop to wait for Sue and Howard
Report Post Tip
Gabe i'll come with you, but i'll make my own way up, i have a few "influencial" friends that I should speak to first see what they can get for me... and then i'll pick up some bodies and be on my way.

Howard remembers the Cheif of Police owes him a small favor

Howard runs towards his car, jumps in the drivers seat and heads towards town.
Report Post Tip
Gabe nodded at Howard and watched as he sped away, then looked back at the cafe and laid on his horn for a moment

Sue, lets go!
