Cronus, the usually quiet man, emerges from the alleyway running alongside the Coyote Ugly bar. As he moves towards the nearby streetcorner, he takes notice of all the men and women telling stories, seemingly to themselves, and speaking on a variety of subjects that he had heard more than a few times previously. Sighing to himself, he too, searched, and finally found, a corner on which he, too, could speak... My fellow undesirables, I come before you today to speak about our fair streets. It seems as though we live in a day and age, where anyone and everyone can run out their door, find the nearest streetcorner, and speak about anything and everything, so long as it's not negative towards our Bosses. Call it democracy, but seriously, is this acceptable in our world? My complaint is not a new one, and clearly, others too have become sick and tired of the same regurgitated drivel that is spewed on these streets on a near daily basis. With so much emphasis put on "street presence", I understand the desire to want to run out and speak about something...anything. I also realize that there is little, under the sun, that hasn't been talked about already. For a long time now, we've all been subjected to speeches on Omerta, Loyalty, Why Coffeeshops Are Bad, and a plethora of subjects that have absolutely nothing to do with this world we live in. We've all listened to the "tee-hee's" and "kudos to you". We've heard the "you suck's" and the "I hate you's". By now we've heard that both crewleaders and crewmembers "don't work hard enough", and that both are "lazy". I've heard that new people suck and well known people are great. I've heard it all many, many, many, many, many, many times now. Where are the new topics/ideas/speeches? Now, all this being said, there are some wonderful street speakers out there, and many people are making wonderful strides to make our streets interesting again. My qualm is with those that put so much emphasis on street presence that they regurgitate the same old topics and allow anything and everything to be spoken. New ideas aren't easy to come by, and I'm not even saying some of our old topics shouldn't be dusted off and brought back out to our streets to be discussed again. What I am saying is, wouldn't this world be a much better place if some thought was put behind our ideas and speeches here? The irritated man, upon finishing his rant, moves off thinking to himself "Even if people disagree with me, at least I did my street speaking for the day". He chuckles to himself, then disappears around the corner and out of sight. |

There may not be new topics to discuss, but I believe there are an endless supply of ideas out there. We just need to tap into them. I think if one thing separates the old days from the present is that we don't have anyone coming up with new ideas any more. It's always got to be a rant or a story. We could liven up the streets if instead of trying to think up new topics, we tried to think up new ideas. Dick Gozinya's Idiot's Theatre, WMOB Radio, Poppy's Street Parties, Sly Cooper's Sunday Times, are a few examples of ideas that mobsters used to use to liven up the streets on boring days. These were neither stories nor rants. Think outside the box, and we can get out of this monotony. Next time you want to say something, think less about what to say and think more about a new and original way to communicate. |
