It was a cold and dreary day outside Charlie's car window. She sat and watched the leaves, dirt, and trash get swept up in miniature whirlwinds created by the wind coming off the lake. She recognized the section of town she was driving through. Just down the block was a clothing textile factory that she had first gotten employment at when she came to Chicago from Peoria. Of course it lasted only 3 days.

Charlie thought back to that day.

"YOU BROKE MY FUCKING NOSE, BITCH! YOUR FIRED!" the supervisor yelled as he went running off the floor of the clothing factory. A roar of cheers erupted for Charlie until the supervisor yelled again as he went out the door, "GET BACK TO WORK OR YOU ARE ALL FIRED!"
Charlie could not blame them for ducking their eyes and going back to their work. Jobs were hard to come by during these difficult times. It was the whole reason her parents had sent her from Peoria to Chicago. Times were hard all over the country, but it was even more so in the rural areas. Whole groups of people were mass migrating to the cities in search of means to survive.

As she walked out of the factory, the gravity of the situation slowly started to sink in. No job, no money, equaled no food. Still if she had to do it again she would. No job was worth getting raped, or as her supervisor had call it "showing her appreciation". Well he had received her appreciation all right.
She looked first up the street and then down the street not knowing where to even go next.

"Hey dollface," was spoken behind her.

She balled her fists as she whirled around and the young man held up his hands indicating he was not looking for a fight... or anything else, "Easy dollface. I heard what happened in there."

"What of it?" she snapped angrily to cover her humiliation.

The young man smiled, "I know some people who could use your talents."

"Not interested," she said as she started to turn and walk away.

"They pay well. You can be eating a steak with all the fixen tonight."

The growling in her stomach stopped her, "What would I have to do to get paid?"

The young man smiled, "Just take a package to an address they will give you. That's it doll. Easy money."

Coming back to the presence she thought about something for a moment before turning to speak to Jimmy. "There is a floor boss in that clothing textile a couple of blocks back. Goes by the name Ernie -- Five-ten, heavy set, and balding." Jimmy nodded his understanding and Charlie added, "bring him to that back alley next to the Gallo and Hathaway Account House."
