Sometimes Things Get Worse Before They Get Better Started by: Shini on Dec 02, '17 05:16

Shini was sitting on a curb, chin resting on his folded hands as he thought about what to do now that he was homeless again. The Golden Eagle, his ever loyal and faithful companion, rested on his shoulder as usual. The bird was attempting to tidy up the distant looking man's hair. The man and the bird were interrupted from their activities when a really fancy car pulled up. The Golden Eagle went back to the work before him while Shini watched as a well-dressed man exited his vehicle and went into a building. With the distraction gone, he was pulled back into his thoughts when he heard footsteps and voices. Shini frowned and looked up to see a group of three surrounding the fancy car. He tensed slightly, knowing that something bad would happen.

"Hey, you three should leave that car alone if you know what's good for ya!" He shouted, gaining the group's attention.

"Shut it pipsqueak and mind your own damn business! This has nothing to do with you!" The one who seemed to be the ringleader of the group shouted. The men then went back to their tasks at hand, removing knives and pulling an egg carton out of a sack.

"I said, leave it alone," Shini repeated, standing up and receiving an unhappy response from his bird.

The group turned to look at him again. "And I said to shut up and mind your own business. Besides, you can't make us do anything. Not you or your bird." The ringleader said.

The short man sighed in annoyance, not really in the mood for a fight but knew there would be no backing out at that point. "You'd be surprised what we can do. Eagal, let's show these guys who they're messing with." He said before the bird took flight before swiping down at one of them and began a pecking frenzy, causing the man to scream. Shini then pulled out a knife. "So, who wants to go first?" Both men responded by charging at him, one holding a bat and the other a knife. The male went after the one with the bat first, ducking when the blunt object swung towards him and jabbing it's owner the side with his knife, hearing a satisfying wheezing noise before the man collapsed and dropped the bat. Needing a new weapon, he picked up the bat just as his other attacker moved for a stab in his neck. Shini blocked the attack with the bat, hearing the man curse when the knife became stuck. With the other being defenseless, he swung the bat at him and hit the defenseless man's kneecaps. There was a grunting noise when he connected then the sound of his target falling. Shini quickly delivered a final blow to the back of the man's head before looking to see how Eagal was doing. The bird seemed to be doing fine, having the final attacker on the ground in a fetal position.

Capazzo smiled as he just finished with an important meeting. He was starting a new business venture and had to come meet with a couple vendors. Once he was finished he headed outside. He reached into his pocket as he exited the building and pulled out a cigar. Capazzo then saw a body laying bloody on the street. It was odd yet he was calm, cool and collected as always. He lit his cigar and saw yet another body next to his precious car, one of many...his 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom.

He turned and saw a very short man and also a bird with him. He looked at the stranger.

"Oi...what the hell happened here?" Capazzo surveyed everything and asked the short man.

Shini looked at the man, recognizing it was the owner of the car. He brought the bloody bat to rest on his shoulder. "They didn't listen so I had to make them leave your car alone. They were going to total it."

Capazzo nodded slowly and took a puff of his cigar.

"So uhhh, just you, your bird and your bat take care of all that huh?"

It was impressive that a man of his stature could handle all these people, even with a weapon. Capazzo looked around to see if this was some sort of joke or setup. But nothing. Perhaps he had a bunch of people with him, like a gang. But once again, nothing...no one.

"That's a nice job you did there."

Capazzo looked over to his car and surveyed it. It was untouched, not a mark on it, he nodded once more. He looked around and there was a few civilians in nearby businesses and people driving up and down the roads. Capazzo shook his head as the thugs were actually attempting to boost his car in broad daylight. He realized this was a expensive car but didn't think no one in their right mind would try to steal a car that could only be afforded buy a well connected man. Capazzo was grateful the bird man stepped in and handled the situation.

"Thank you, I appreciate that very much. Here..."

Capazzo reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out a wad of cash as he inhaled some more of the cigar then he handed the man a stack of cash as he exhaled the smoke from the cigar.

"Please, take this as a generous thank you."

"My bat? Nah, this is his bat." Shini said, pointing at the man with the knife in his side. "That knife is mine though." He answered as the bird settled on his shoulder. "Than-" He was about to respond when his stomach growled. His mind went blank for a moment, surprised by the noise. "Thanks but I can't accept the offer."

Capazzo listened as the man spoke. He had declined The Don's offer and had this been another situation he would've simply and calmly walked up to the man, broke his neck, left him for dead and then got in his car and drove home however the man clearly had no idea who he was or what he did. What Capazzo did notice but mostly hear, was that the strangers stomach started making noises. If the man didn't want his money then maybe he could offer him some food.

The truth was Capazzo liked the way this guy did business. If he could take out three men in the state he was in he could probably do a lot more with the right training and proper guidance all while having the protection to do it. The wheels in Capazzo's head started turning and things were falling into place. The boss stopped wasting time and got to it.

"Sounds like your food could use a bit of a pick me up. There is a good diner right around the corner from here, what's say we go get that stomach a bite to eat?"

Capazzo puffed his cigar as he awaited a answer.

While Shini couldn't accept the money, he didn't mind the sound of food. "Eagal, why don't you go hunt for something? We'll meet up later." He told the bird. The eagle flew off before he nodded. "That offer I can take. It wasn't my intentions to be disrespectful and reject your money. I just can't accept money for something that anyone proper person should do. Besides, if the cops decided they want to shake me down while I'm in this state with that wad, something bad would happen."

Don Capazzo smiled as the man discussed his reasoning for turning down the offer. It made sense, in addition to the man's obvious weapon skills he also had a mind on him, that was a great combination. Capazzo gave the man a nod to head toward the car. Capazzo was happy the stranger was going to take him up on the offer to get some food.

"Okay, that was pretty smart thinking. Those fuckin pigs are always trying shake someone down."

Capazzo angrily said as he made his way into the car. He opened the other side and let the man in. Capazzo looked as he got in then a few moments later drove off.

"Alright, next stop is...food."

The Don drove through the streets of South Side as he was contemplating getting this man into his organization as quickly as possible. Capazzo had no idea what the man's name was but he knew he wanted him in his family. There was a lot of work still to be done on the stranger but at least he was starting out with some positives. Capazzo looked at him and asked a question.

"Do you own any suits?"

The man look puzzled as Capazzo laughed. The man didn't know it but he was in the beginning stages of joining one of the biggest underground criminal organizations in Chicago. The Capazzo Crime Syndicate.
