Carnival is a simple man in and out of his human shell. Not much to say other than he enjoys the company of many and dislikes the company of very few, his preferences in hobbies are not much but among them it was the jazz, the music of the soul. He would stay long nights in bars and places where there would be jazz and have a few drinks along for the night not going too overboard. Among those beautifully crafted songs there was one exceptional where he would have an extra glass for the sake of it. The name of that particular song was "Hey There" Sang by "Roosemary Clooney" a song deep enough that touched Carnival's soul to it's deepest parts. Sitting on a stool with his body sideways - his legs crossed as he was taking his glass once a while to taste that fine drink of a bourbon, his top hat Fedora leaning slightly on the low side at the tip and his shoes shining to the lights ever so slightly. Carnival's wardrobe consisted mostly of a mixture of single and double breasted set of suits. The one he wore at that fine evening was a double breasted black suit, slightly going towards the grey color. Many were present and seated, some had smiles in their faces and some were toasting glasses in celebration to being a part of an evening such as this. To hear the voice and the lyrics of a beautiful artist like Roosemary Clooney at that time was rare, one of her songs which had deep meaning and which was Carnival's favorite of that artist was the song she was singing 'Hey there'. While listening to her voice, the reminiscing started to kick in. Like any person in the world, everyone has a past, a past where one always has to look back and recall every time they make a move forward for better or worse. Carnival's story began in late 1910. Only Fifteen in age, with his parents in debt to the local mob and his father succumbing in depression because of that reason with his mother one time being well and more times being not, Carnival had no choice but to strengthen his resolve and do good by them. Letting himself be recruited by the same people his family owed money to, Carnival started working for them, with that came the hardships of this thing of ours, beaten to a pulp one time, and getting away with big amounts of cash the next. Most importantly in all of this there was something he gained, experience, and that to someone was the most valuable thing in the world. The time he stayed with this crime syndicate was long and had its hardships. For ten long years Carnival stayed in their shadow acquiring the necessary experience and connections throughout the underworld, once in a while he'd call back home to check on his family that he provided with necessary income each month to make a living. From racketeering going into assassinations and from there moving up in the world to being made. Carnival's main goal had not changed he never wanted to stay in this thing of ours, but the more you're in it for whatever reason it becomes that much harder to get out. Few years passed by, bribes had become a thing, and by now Carnival had much more influence than the mob family he was into but stayed very secretive about his connection and never told anyone in all those years he worked for them, in fact he always stayed cool headed and rarely smiled at anyone, keeping to himself most of the time and avoiding people as much as possible - making everyone believe that he was just a passive guy that did his job and went with it until he payed off his debts. But the thing is he had already payed off his debts, a while ago at that. Only him and his boss knew about that. Carnival didn't even tell his parents about it. 1920. At this point Carnival was 25 of age. His time to make his move came. With a smirk on his face Carnival says goodbye to his so called boss, as he leaves, waves and on his other hand presses a button that was wired to TNT bombs inside every room of the establishment. At that particular time most of the family was together since it was a time of organization, a monthly meeting of sort that Carnival never took part in, but he knew that they would meet like this because all these years he had been with them they always had this routine. Being ready was a motto Carnival developed naturally from the experience, with the connections he had acquired he had friends, friends that knew his hardships and the hardships of every other man in debt to these people. As soon as the fireworks stop, Carnival makes his way to the closest booth to call in everyone and blaze the city with everyone connected to this crime family, that night was a night to be remembered. As a few tears drop down his cheek as soon as he finishes the call and puts the phone back in place, in sensitivity to the subject and all the hardships for this one moment Carnival does not realize that there was a surviving mobster behind him, that mobster points the gun at Carnival and without saying a word shoots in Carnival's direction, Carnival takes a hit on his shoulder and lower back and falls to the ground slowly as he turns his head towards his shooter. The mobster who did the shooting died soon after because of the blood loss from major traumas in his body caused by the explosions. Few minutes pass, laying on the ground, Carnival's conscience begins fading away. Before completely losing conscience he sees a figure, a figure that tries to speak to him, yell even, at this point Carnival had close his eyes. Sometime after, Carnival wakes up, looks around the place he is in. Realizes that it's a private home, and takes a look in all directions. Sees a person sitting there on a chair next to the bed, there was a woman that looked straight without blinking and having her eyes slightly greyed. Carnival quickly comes to the assumption that she is blind but still having no idea how he came here. "Where am I?" Carnival says as he looks more around the room. "Well, well, it was about time you woke up." With a smile on her face she replied and begun speaking. "I've been following you're movements for a while now. You did good but you let your emotions run a little bit too wild at the end, didn't you? Some of my men were asking if you were alright..." She says with a grin on her face, quickly gaining Carnival's attention and at her word of saying 'my men" Carnival got fully surprised and quickly came to a bunch of conclusions that some of his connections and men were most likely affiliated with this unknown elderly person. "I bet you're surprised! It's a shame I can't see that beautiful face of yours and that expression. Oh well, it is what it is. I'll be blunt; We needed someone inside that crime family. Someone that knew what was going on inside and outside with every connection to that group of scum... You get what I'm saying?" As soon as she spoke her grin had lost its composure then had vanished. Carnival gives in a reply of his own. "I was used?" Carnival wasn't feeling down even if he was used, the situation just demanded some answers. "Oh no! It's not entirely like that. Look at it this way, friends with benefits. You scratch our back and we scratch yours kind of thing, we both needed to get rid of a nasty plague that was in our streets." She smiles again as she was finishing her words. Carnival tries to get up but is hurt and his bandages were still covered in blood from both areas that he was shot. "How did you bring me here...?" Curious, not believing for a second that a blind woman in her elderly stage would be able to move him from that chaos. "It's not like I could do it." She laughs out loud. "I had some of my big strong men to deal with that, good thing your injuries weren't fatal. You were pretty messed up." Carnival replies in quick succession. "Sorry for the trouble... and I'm still sinking in all of this information in my head, who would have thought that I was being used like this, can't complain because in the end I achieved what I wanted but still feel bitter about it, thought I could do it with my own power..." As soon as he finished the words his head goes down sulking over everything. The elderly blind woman waits for a bit sensing the silence and says her peace. "It was your power, we got rid of this disease because of you, I couldn't infiltrate that organization for years, just like you, I had my reasons for going against it and I did fine until you arrived and helped them grow exponentially." Clicks her tongue a few times. "That reason and resolve you had made that organization boom in money and power, but not in my wildest dreams would I guess that you were feeding the pig to get slaughtered in the end, only found out after your tried recruiting my men which i quickly gave my consent and let them be yours for a time until that organizations destruction." She slaps her hands in recognition. Carnival still sulking but gets out a few words. "Either way, I am in debt to you. Thank you for patching me up." Carnival instinctively glances at her when he shows his gratitude. She replies. "Don't mention it kiddo, it was the least of things I could have done." She chuckles and goes back to a more serious face. "I'll be blunt. Now that all this is over and your life already is with a foot on the grave since the moment you ended up on this side of the fence I want to recruit you... of sort. Could use a handy man like yourself. You'll live under my roof, your family is going to be well protected, and if there are doubts concerning me you've already seen through my men what kind of person I am." Awaits a reply eagerly as her hand clench on top of her lap. "... I wanted to get out of this world as soon as I was done with it, but by reputation seems like that won't be possible and not to mention I can't make any decisions the way i am right now." Carnival places a hand on his shoulder wound instinctively. The elderly woman replies. "Takes your time, no rush on this one. With that said, i will have to take my leave, even if I'm blind I still have some work here and there, there was a reason why I cut this short." Laughs out loud for a bit as she was making her way towards the door to exit the room they were in. "Thanks again for saving my life." Carnival replies before she exits the room. She stops and reverts her head towards Carnival. "Don't mention it, and give my proposal a thought." She exits the room. Slowly Carnival's injuries begun to heal up, first his shoulder than his back. The wounds were not fatal yet he was constantly being reminded by doctors that came to check on him for health issues that he was in luck, Carnival always brushing their words aside telling them that everyone dies someday. As that whole phase of bedridden ended, Carnival had made up his mind to stick with her new boss, little did he know that he'd be kept for house duty only. As soon as he gave his answer to her he received that position. Few years passed by, Carnival's new boss which he ended up admiring died of old age, her health started deteriorating that ended up in her natural death soon after. The new family Carnival was into crumbled with her death, everyone respected a certain decision she had made while still living for everyone to move on after her passing, so each and every one took different paths. Carnival set his sights of his old connections to begin a new life, maybe even restart his previous activities of danger, life for him at this point had many opportunities for the taking. |
