A “go-bag” is defined as “a collection of items you would take with you in the event of an evacuation,” but in a recent article, a reporter asked some well-known people what other items they’d put in their bags besides the most basic emergency provisions which would obviously be in there.

If you were leaving your home in a hurry in the event of a disaster, what items — irreplaceable because of their practical, sentimental or monetary value — would you make sure to include in your go bag?

After grabbing the pre made  survival bag with all the basics. I would also grab a ball of hemp twine,  the 22epistol, the 30-40 Krag and of course ammo for both, a square of clean plastic ( for water distillation), a metal pot, and of course my supply of marijuana seeds.

Fishingrod, knifes, binoculars and some sunglasses.

Beyond the basics:

My phone, laptop, dog, & S&W Bodyguard (plus ammo)

My tablet(fully loaded with downloaded movies & books, of course) with a bunch of backup battery packs just in case the power goes out and maybe my Kindle e-reader as backup. I'll even throw out some essential stuff if it means being entertained for a little bit longer!

My gun. NRA allows me to pack.

I already live in the middle of nowhere.. If I had to evacuate for any reason, I would just conclude the world is fucked and accept my fate.

But to not be the guy that avoids the question... Bear in mind I am also assuming I am at home with my family, and not alone.

1. Pistol, rifle, and shotgun and the ammo.. At least one of each or all of my weapons should time allow and space allow. Depending on the situation these will be used for hunting or killing people, sadly. 

2. Food - Canned food and other non-perishables, I do have some MRE's somewhere also.

3. Tools - Chances are if I have to leave my house I am gonna be roughing it out in the woods somewhere, I could get to my hunting cabin.. But that is about 15-20 minutes walk by crow-fly so.. Assuming that would also be lost I would want some basic tools for building a shelter and gathering firewood.. Saw, axe rope or twine.. Etc.. 

4. Clothing - It's northern Wisconsin, it's Winter like 9 months out of the year so you're gonna want war cloths. Jacket, insulated pants.. The works.

5. Kitchen/Cooking equipment - So we have a rough plan for shelter, food, defense, and clothing. What about water? Luckily once again being in Northern Wisconsin there literally freshwater everywhere. Obviously you can't just go to the lake and start chugging.. Gonna need something to boil it in, a steel pot or whatever. But since we packed that we could grab some knives and other utensils. The knives would come in handy for when you have to hunt and clean your kill.

6. Other People - The added benefit of being where I am is basically everyone living around me I have either grown up with, or am related to. We all know each other. I would like to think it wouldn't be difficult for us to find each other and help each other out. Hard to say for sure until it happen though, I suppose. 

I also am aware that this was suppose to be if you leave your home in a hurry. Reading through it would seem like this would take forever, right? All of the things I have mentioned in each segment are items that stored in similar places. Open the pantry and start throwing canned food in your "go bag." Unlock the gun safe and just grab what you can. Open your closet and grab what can, it's February so luckily my winter stuff is out already. Grabbing a handful of utensils and a cooking pot should not be too time consuming. Once I had that stuff, all I have to do is run out the back door about 70 yards and I am in the woods. From there I can try to meet up with the neighbors or figure out a shelter situation.

I'm assuming it has to be portable, right? So, my entire book collection wouldn't work... At the very least, my leather-bound Poe collection and the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... Damn, I really want to bring my Xanth series, but that's over 40 books, and I can't carry that many in a hurry... Also needle and thread, my crochet hooks, and probably seeds. 

I'm assuming the basics are food, water purifying tablets, clothes, sleeping bag. So other than those I would take:

Notepad and pen

I'd want to take a book but wouldn't be able to make my mind up. 

A photo album

Drop spindle and fleece

Knitting needles

A brick

A fluffy stuffed thing that none of your will ever know about

A pillow

How big of a bag are we allowed?

Pot, maybe some acid. All you can fit in those tiny sandwich bags from the bodega. 

Besides the common, essential items, I would take pictures of my kids, my important documents, priceless artwork my kids did in school, the book I'm currently reading, a pillow and a blanket.. My kids would of course have their own bags, in which they'd probably shove toys, despite me telling them to just take one toy, a pillow and a blanket.

Besides the normal like clothes, a pocket knife .

Water, light food, lighter, paper, pens, cigarettes, my meds, rubbing alcohol, biggest knife in the kitchen, power-bank and my phone (it's still a good flash-light, camera and reader and it has FM radio).

More things, situational:

In apocalypse scenario, I'd take my scrap electric components and chemicals needed to make simple bombs. These can be good to attract attention of other survivors, or as weapons. It may sound unrealistic, but trust me it's easier than it sounds, unfortunately :(

In disease scenario, I'd take pain relief meds and cloth to cover my face.

In chemical attack scenario, it's similar but I'd also carry whatever is suitable to neutralize the compound used. Which is not always easy.
