Ambitions Started by: Moretay on Jan 13, '08 12:02
Once again I am here to ask for your thoughts on something that has been going through my mind

Recently I was speaking with two different people. One was saying how he wanted to go on to be a well respected person around here, possibly even a leader. I was, as you can imagine, very pleased with this. Knowing he has something which is driving him on making him push to gain the respect and knowledge needed to succeed around here.

Then I was speaking with someone else. A respectable business man who doesnt want any responsibilty working with the family. All he wants is our protection, He keeps the cash rolling in for me and calls into the HQ sometimes. but he is away working abroad a lot and so cannot be around for us as much as he wants. Now dont get me wrong when he is around he helps out and does everything required of him but he knows he wont be in town long enough to help out with anything major.

Now what is bothering me is this. one person with ambitions, one without. Does that mean the person without ambition is not important to the family? After all, he gets involved, helps out when he can and has been honest about letting me know its not possible for them to do as much as others. so should they be looked down upon for it.

my personal opinion is that everyone has their part to play on making the family work. whether it be your Right Hand or someone that just goes out and helps make cash for the family. but I would like to hear your opinions on the subject.

No i dont think the person without amibitions should be looked down upon because he is he doing what you ask of him when he can and hes being realistic that he cant hold responsibility of anything within the family because he hasnt got the time. He could say yes,yes ill do this ill do that and then do nothing but he has been honest and told you the facts which is a quality you need.

Ambition is something we should all have, at least in some form.

Even the ones who do not strive for the top may still have ambition. And sometimes we need to weigh out our qualities. It shows a great deal of character to be so honest as to admit you do not want or cannot reach that next level. It shows even more loyalty to his leader, as it would seem his plan is to stick by his family until the end. Is it not ambitious of this person to hold these qualities?

I think that ambition is about the most important qualities anyone can have. It's not easy to improve without the ambition to do so, and it's certainly not easy to excel. However, a coworker (or anyone, really) don't gotta have ambition to actually be good, as you pointed out. If someone already is good, lack of ambition won't necessarily worsen him, but I doubt that he'll improve very much. Myself I want to be among the best, I bet you want that too, and to be that you have to work with the best. I don't really think it matters if you're working under or above 'em, you'd still improve. That's just my thought.

I'd say that it's up to each and every one to set his or hers goals and no one elses business, but in the mafia one gotta think one step further: do you really really know his ambitions? I honestly can't trust people without ambitions...

I don't believe this is a question of ambition and lack of ambition. Perhaps the second gentleman's ambition is to stay alive and be successful. Certainly we all have this ambition in us; it's what keeps us alive, at the very least.

Just because his ambition doesn't stem beyond that is not something that I feel should be held against him. Some are made to be leaders; others are not. I feel that ambitions for great goals is a good thing, but knowledge that one will never attain those goals is something else. I, for one, realize that I most likely never will be a crewleader, and therefore, I have no ambition to succeed in that manner. Instead, my ambition is to move up in my family and keep doing the work I am doing, in order to help the family.

If there is folly in this ambition, then I apologize. But it what I do and who I am, and my ambition will most likely never stem beyond that.

While you may feel that the second person does not have ambitions you are in fact quite wrong there. Just because they do not wish for a position of responsibility the fact that they keep coming back and doing they best they can for you while they aren't abroad shows that thye aren't just using you for protection.

While their ambition may not be as clear cut as the known one of maybe one day becoming a familyhead they still have the drive to do what they can when they can for you and your family. People that spend a long amount of time abroad and then come back and give it their all are rare to find, there are many in that position that, when they do come back do it to catch up on mail and do the odd bit of work rather than devote themselves to what the family needs.

Though this is a tough subject I do have a few words to say about this small question that has been asked of us. It is my opinion that anyone that helps in any way is important to the family. Now if this person does not help as much as another then he will not get as far as the latter. The first man should not be given the axe just because he can not be around as much as another gentleman, but that is not to say that the second man in this situation should not get better treatment and be given more of a chance to go farther in life. After all, his hard work should count for something right?

In The Captains not so humble opinion, just because one doesn't wish to be a leader themselves, doesn't mean they don't have ambition. Each person is different, some of us strive to one day take the reigns of an organization, or family of our own, others are just followers by nature, and there's nothing wrong with that. A leader wouldn't be a leader, if they had nothing to lead.

Some people just have the skill, or the time to be a leader, and those in power, should be grateful. Personally, The Captain wouldn't want too many people with ambitions of being a leader, in his family. He'd get sick of rebuilding each time after somebody left with half of the family.
Report Post Tip
Why have ambition? There's few opportunities for those with it.

As is, I think a lot of people, just show up, do what they can/want, chat with friends, and leave it at that these days. Hard work has gone by the wayside, because rarely is it noticed or appreciated. We live in a world where those that use old names continue being given things that others, even though they work harder, aren't. Why put in effort? Why be ambitious?
Report Post Tip
I think everyone has some type of ambition. Some have different ones than others, whether it be ranking, making money, or some higher position. As long as a person is helping out the family in some way, and not slacking, they shouldn't be looked down upon. Not everyone aspires to go on to greater things, but are happy just being in a family, and helping out.
Report Post Tip
Cronus, I think you are confusing effort with ambition. A person may be very ambitious and want to get ahead in life, but may never put in any effort in order to get there. On the other hand, a person may put in hard work for their family without having an ambition to work up to being crewleader one day or anything of that sort.

I believe that there are many hard-working people out here with few ambitions, just as there are many ambitious young gangsters out there who never put in the effort to make it to where they want to be.

Ideally, if a person has ambitions to reach a certain point, he or she will put in the effort to get there, but not everyone will. Ambitions, like dreams, are good things to have, but in the meantime, there's nothing wrong with working hard and making money or whatever.
Report Post Tip
That was my exact point.

Why bother having ambition if all effort is wasted? Clearly I didn't confuse the two. The two go hand in hand. People wonder why people don't put in effort? As I said, many people don't put in effort because they've realized that to indulge in their ambitions usually leads to disappointment when they are constantly overlooked.

On the flipside, sure there are some with ambition that aren't willing to put in the effort. My point was regarding those that have given up on ambitions due to the fact that their efforts have largely gone unnoticed.

Ambition is what drives us to make that extra cash for the family. To kick up more than everyone else. To out beat there opponents. Thats how I see ambition in my eyes. To prove your worth something to the people that matter. This is a world of people of ambition. Everyone is trying to outbid everyone else. Thats why this world is so great.
Report Post Tip
This is very nice but sometimes people have lives,

they have to live and everyone has to understand this.

Being ambitious is great but in some instances it isn't possible to

contribute all the time others think is needed for the family.
Report Post Tip
In my opinion, Moretay, you are right.

One person may have ambitions, but that doesn't make him any more important than the one that doesn't have ambitions. Every member is important in their own way, none more than the other, but all equal.

Think of it this way, the one with ambitions someday wants to leave the family and possibly be a leader, but the other one is perfectly fine with being a regular mafioso and serving his family the best way he can. While the one with ambitions is still in the family he is just as important as everyone else, ambitions or not.
Report Post Tip
I agree with Moretay that everyone has an important role in the family no matter what position they are holding though I'd have to disagree with him on his point that the latter has no ambitions at all. As what the others have said, the latter's ambitions are not as clear cut as the former, either he aims to stay alive or to make his business prosper, whatever the case, he still has one.

Moreover, I'd like to think as some people mentioned here that everyone has their own ambitions but only a few succeed in realizing theirs. I think that ambitions are not the sole basis in defining the importance of a person. Some may be very vocal in their ambitions but fall short in their path towards their goals and some may not be vocal and instead, they let their actions speak for what they aspire to achieve. Also, some may have good ambitions and others sadly have selfish ones.

In addition to ambitions and what I believe constitutes the bulk in weighing the importance of a person is looking at the person's contribution to the family. The mere fact that the business man is doing his part for the family, as opposed to one who joins our family and does nothing afterwards, the businessman is then considered important to the family. It all basically boils down to the one who does his part.
Report Post Tip
Although it is true that everyone within a family holds an important place in the family no matter what their position in fact is, you will have a hard time finding someone who is acting completely selflessly. Mafioso bust each other out of jail not for their benefit but for their own and they donate often just to build a good rapore with their boss therefore allowing advancement within that family.

Basically there is no such thing as a selfless action.
Report Post Tip
Your right, there can never be a selfless action, but I think that is a pesimistic opinion. Sometimes its nice to think that people DO do things out of the goodness of their hearts and not just for self gain. Even if its not entirely true
Report Post Tip
I can see your point Signore but I would have to disagree with the both you on what you say that there is no such thing as a selfless act in this thing of ours.

If what you say is true then what do we say of the RHM/RHW of each Crew Leader? Not disrespecting or demeaning the prestigious position of Crew Leader but I would just like to prove a point and for the sake of argument the RH position is the best example for this case as it can be argued that a Crew Leader can act for his or her own self-serving interests.

Going back to my point, the RH position is one of the best examples of a selfless act. As the most trusted man/woman of their crew leader, they bear the brunt of responsibility of their family and give as much as a crew leader gives up for his or her own crew. A RH puts his or her own family's needs above theirs. Such position takes a lot from a person, personal sacrifices to be made, and dreams to be given up for the sake of the family. Along with such dreams is the chance of running their own crew.

And that is why I say that there are selfless acts in this thing of ours and it's not that hard to find one.

im with super. not everyone is meant to be a leader, but in no way should that person be looked down upon. some people have the qualities and some dont its how it goes. who knows one day that non-ambitious man may see the light and want to be a leader in this world but untill then he should be left where he/she is, and commended for the job they already do.

just my opinion.
