Did they break the mold? Started by: TonyCastelli on Feb 06, '18 01:40

Tony was sitting inside the Rainy Day Lounge in Seattle when he saw a few of his friends come inside. They began chatting about different mobsters they had interacted with, worked with, or read about in their ancestors journals. As he listened and even shared some of this information himself he found that there were many different mafioso out there. Not just their backgrounds or where they came from as they came from all over the place, but what kind of skills they had or aspired to develop.

There were so many different types of mafioso in this thing of ours that all contributed to a family, a district, or a city in their own way. He saw the importance of them all and began to wonder how others felt on the subject. He began to take note of these different skills and attributes that he found to differentiate one mafioso from another. He finally finished his notes and looked down at the napkin in front of him...

The Hitter: This person has exceptional skill and knowledge of the gun. They dedicate themselves to the killing of others in order to hone their skill. In a time of war they are the ones called upon to go to the mattresses and fight it out with the opposing side. Without them a city cannot defend themselves or go on the offensive....

The Earner: This person brings in the big bucks. They find any way to make a dollar whether they are snatching purses, making drug deals, or playing a game of dice. A lot of the cash flow a crew leader sees comes from this person. Without these people a crew may struggle to afford all of their costs. A crew can sink or float depending on whether they have good earners.

The Public Speaker: This person is very active in the streets. Whether they are telling stories, making speeches, or starting discussions. They keep people thinking or talking across all the cities. Sometimes this person may even work on creating a newspaper for others to pick up and read on their day to day business to be informed. They can even sometimes motivate those around them to be active in the streets.

The Talker: This person, while the title is similar to the public speaker, is different. They are talkative within the headquarters of their crew or around their district or city. They help to get people talking and interacting with one another. They add a bit of excitement or activity to their surroundings. They make sure that a crew doesn't feel quiet and lonely. Sometimes this person can also be seen as the "wise guy" of the group who is always cracking jokes and having fun.

The Old Vet: This person may not be the most active, talkative, or doing much of anything depending on their motivation. The one thing they do bring to the table is experience and knowledge to share with the younger members of the crew. They can find themselves mentoring others who are new to these shores. Sometimes they can be a Consigliere to the Crew Leader using their experience and the logs found in their ancestor's journals.

The Born Leader: This person, while not the actual leader of the crew and without a position of power is a born leader. They find themselves helping those around them and guiding them when the need arises. Sometimes these people becomes sponsors for a crew or over time they may even find themselves holding a position of power within a crew. They do not sit idle when the crew needs something and can help to ease the load of work that a Crew Leader can find for themselves.

The Light Bulb: This person is a creator of ideas. While they may not act upon them or have the skills or resources to make them happen, they share these ideas with their Crew. They can sometimes inspire those around them including the Crew Leader or the Public Speaker. Some people even just have more ideas than they themselves can possibly use or accomplish.

Mr./Mrs. Knowledgeable: These people are able to collect and sort through information for your crew, district, or city. They are smarter than most and can sort through the information that they gather in order to use it for the benefit of the crew. Sometimes that means using their skills during a time of war.

The All-Star: This person is a collection of most if not all of these attributes. There are not many who fall into this category and those who do usually find themselves advancing faster than others. They can become an integral piece of any organization. These members can completely change a crew and how successful they are some times.

Tony looks at his apparently massive napkin and nods in approval to himself. He shares it with the few around him and they nod as well. He then begins to go around to others at the lounge in order to share it with them and spark up the conversation with them. He keeps asking many of them similar questions...

"Which of these do you think may describe yourself? Just one or maybe a combination of both?" He asks one person.

"Do you think there is something that we missed on this list?" Tony asked a patron at the bar.

"Do you wish you could improve upon one of these or is there one you'd like to see more mafioso work on?" He poses the question to a group playing pool.

"Do you think any of these are much more important than others? Or are all of them essential to a successful crew?" Tony asks the few people playing poker as he lights a cigar.

Tony was looking to get as much input as possible as he found the topic very interesting. He found himself to be some of these things more than others. He had found himself surrounded by many mafioso who fit into these categories in Las Vegas. Some were masters of these skills and some were still working on them. He knew there were some who ignored some of these things completely and focused solely on only one or two of these skills. Some were so fresh off the boat they found themselves lacking in all areas and trying to find their true place in this thing of ours.

He finally steps up on the bar and turns to everyone, "So what do you think?"

Kaira listened to Tony's talk about different types of mafioso and for some reason she felt like his list wasn't complete. She looked at AlejandroGuevara and then turned to TonyCastelli and said.

I think you didn't mention The Gambler. That person who borrows money from anyone and everyone, gambles it until he manages to lose everything and get himself banned from the gambling table just to go back around when the ban is lifted.

She giggled and started wondering in which category would she fit the best. Would it be the The All-Star mafioso category?

AlejandroGuevara looks at Kaira.. What she just said felt like a stab right into the heart.

You don't have to categorize TheButcher or Bearski as a Gambler. They have many more skills. It really hurts me that you speak of them like that! And I am not even sure if they loan money to gamble at all..!

Looking back at TonyCastelli, Alejandro takes a sip of his wat-- vodka.

Despite Kaira thinking I am a Born Leader, I think I'd call myself an Earner. I don't know shit about guns, and I feel I could be a great Public Speaker if I would not be suffering from agoraphobia, demophobia and glossophobia.
And even though I hate the making jokes part of a characteristic of the Talker description you just gave, I have no problems with talking within our Headquarters or even in our District. So concluding, I would say I am 30 percent Earner and the other 40 percent  Talker.

Alejandro raises an eyebrow..
What category were the clever people again, Tony?

Boogie was casually walking down the street whistling his favorite tune. He seen many crowds lately with orators trying their best to give it a go in the streets. One to always support anything that wasn’t idiotic and barbaric, he loved to see a good speech on HIS Streets.

“This one time in band camp...”

Boogie thought to himself “nope not that one” and kept walking before he had to slap the orator.

“And if you call the number listed on my cardboard you’d receive a lifetime supply of anal cream”

Boogie immediately reach for his gun. But then he thought about the speech he’d probably get from RomanReigns back at the mansion. For the sake of his own anus he decided not to shoot this one.

Then, as if the Gods had decided to end the torture on Boogie, there stood a man with an unusually large napkin in his hands.

A beautiful piece of work you’ve done here TonyCastelli. Not too often I stumble upon a speech to stay for the whole performance, let alone enjoy it. I look forward to see what else you can bring to the table buddy ol’ chap.

TheButcher was walking by when he heard the voice of his lover Alejandroguevara talking about gambling and categories, he is known as a very good speaker but i have never seen him in action.

TheButcher stood there feeling magical and weirdly creepy Happy hearing his love his Dice mentor speaking with full confidence, agreeing with every single word he said! He suddenly yells “YOU ARE CANT BE CATEGORIZED YOU ARE PERFECTION!” Everyone looked at TheButcher in a weird way but he could not stop looking at Alejandro! With his sparkly eyes and butterfly flying around he had to keep walking or else he will pass out!

I'm a badass.  I really just don't give a shit though.

I wouldn't know what I categorize myself as - but I do know the importance of having a variety of different people in the crew.  There are many ways you can contribute.

Jones was listening to Tony attentively as he had managed to get him very interested. While he explained his view on how a gangster can specialize himself, in a manner that he can become useful and hold a purpose that benefits his family and friends, Jones felt that Tony made a very reliable representation of the reality and that it matched how he personally saw the structure working, only much better. Kaira's suggestion was an obvious fit, as they were living in Vegas and all. He as well thought of another role in which the ability to inspire others would be distinguished further, but the born leader and the public speaker or even the light bulb kind of implied that capability on their own, so he disregarded that point and decided instead to go further with Tony's analysis.

"I think that these roles all fall into premises that we can quickly define as being the holders of an added value to the whole. They exist because they're needed, but also because they are in accordance to the inner-workings of our lifestyle. If we're going to resume the roles I believe we should reverse the coin, and resume the resources that each of these are dealing with and to an added extent, providing. And soon we'll find all the roles possible. If I may."

Jones took a pen from his pocket and started scribbling on another napkin. Enumerating each while raising his thumb and having the other fingers follow as he moved:

"Money. Meaning potential in a conserved state. It's the most tangible denominator to ensure survival and protection, by being (along with time) the resource needed to build/hire the defenses for the sole person and for a whole family. Thus allowing the enforcement of a position of strength within the community. The Earner (of which the Gambler is a part of) is the most apparent role to provide this resource, and though it's the leader that usually manages the money of a crew, often times the role of Accountant is taken by someone else, usually a right hand to the big man."

"Connections. The human factor. The links held between the points each person represents can change the outcome of any divergence before it starts. This is the ultimate and most important resource, making judgement the most crucial capability. Creation and manipulation of these can vary in categorization according to distance. Close quarters being the connections made within a city, district or HQ (the Talker), which have the potential to create and reinforce the idea of team-ship within a crew or between neighboring crews. Global being the relations made across the map independently (Public Speaker) or as a representative to a family or leader (Diplomat/PR/Consigliere), being that the latter is usually of a business and formal nature.

"Fire Power. Meaning offensive strength, is the manifestation of a prolonged state of development of a single ability, which couldn't be raised if not by the assurance of safety (enforced by money and/or connections). If money and time can be converted into the cumulative value that protection represents, then protection and time can be used to increase the offensive capability of a man or family. Those who become proficient in dealing damage are usually the tip of the spear and require a lot of time dedicated in training in order to ensure the survival of their crew. The Hitter falls within this resource.

"Information. Of an immediate nature. All that which happens, if it happens within a city it is generally seen or heard by others. Information can be seen as an echo can be heard, it arises from the actions taken by someone which can be perceived by those who are smart enough to perceive it for what it is. This is of crucial value to a crew as actions are much more of a reliant source of the reality than words can ever be. Mr. Knowledgeable deals with information.

"Knowledge. Meaning experience with how the mafia world functions and how the lifestyle is represented. The vagueness with which newcomers are faced in regards to what was just described as knowledge makes this an extremely valuable resource on its own, which cannot be attained singularly if not through a great deal of perception and trial-and-error. The role of passing-on this knowledge should be regarded with the utmost respect. The Old Vet goes here.

"Leadership. Good leadership is the foundation in which great crews are built upon. The ability to lead requires a good management and mindfulness towards all of the resources listed thus far, but also much more than that. The leader must be able to inspire, enacting on others the exigency he directs towards himself. He creates trust within the crew through understanding without losing authority. The Born Leader, fits in this place.

"Brainstorming. Good ideas are a breadth of fresh air in an environment prone to the stagnation of repetition. The ability to redirect the focus and enlarge the field of view of the community deserves to be a resource of its own for the simple fact that it is probably one of the most fundamental ways to propel engagement by new and old timers alike. The Light Bulb lives here.

Jones looked at TonyCastelli while handing him the paper, and concludes "I think that I could have said more about money. But if I could resume it all even further, I'd go with Social (Connections), Factual (Money, Fire Power, Information) and Intellectual (Knowledge, Brainstorming, Leadership) resources. Logically."
