A Moment of Thought Started by: Symfora on Mar 30, '18 16:29

It had been a long day. The weather had started to get a little nicer but it was raining today. Symfora had buried herself down into her coat as she walked along with her friend Mario. Mario was a nice fellow that she had met on her travels around the country. He kept her company and quite often was the reason she was never caught when she got up to her usual shenanigans. Today they were walking around New Orleans. Symfora had decided she wanted a change of scenery that day and they hopped the first flight they could find.

"New Orleans seems nice." She stated as they walked through the streets.

"Can we stop walking? My feet are killing me Sym." As she kept walking he could sense that there was something on her mind today. Spotting a park he ushered her to one of the benches that were covered. Since it was raining there wasn't anyone out wandering the streets. Just people trying to hurry from Point A to Point B. "Sit down and tell me what it is."

Symfora sat on the cold bench. Her thoughts were a mess and she instinctively reached for her hair. Nervously, she twirled it around her fingers as she tried to think of the best way to tell him. Would he laugh at her? Most people would laugh at her for thinking so much. Her mind never stopped and when it did it was only so briefly that she barely noticed. Would he even care about what was on her mind if it wasn't the next big heist, or party to crash?

They had such wonderful adventures. Surely no one else could get into the trouble they got into and talk their way out of it. The whites party just the other month was such a huge thing. And they strolled in with their masks and acted as if it was a masquerade party when it had indeed been a very well to do ball for the up and coming ladies of society. They had worn their best feathers and hats. Gloves, and tuxedos. Oh had Symfora caused a riot when she arrived in a tuxedo. People's mouths had dropped that night. She smiled at the memory.

Her eyes now lit up with such a spark. One that only memory could stir up and she blurted it out. Everything just came pouring out like there was no way to slow down or stop it.

"Have you ever wondered if the life you live was the one for you? Did we wake up one day and just say to ourselves that this was it? The cards are dealt and this is our lot? Do you remember as children trying to envision what adult life was like? Would be rescuers? Ladies married to rich men and living the good life with servants and butlers? Or that we would be providing for our wives and children? Oh what about being a laborer, working day and night, or a maid? Would be drop into poverty? Would we sway with education, politics or even wind up spending our days in jail?

How did it come to this? How did we come to these ends? Was it because our parents were too strict? Did they forbid us from this life? Did they wish for the life of crime upon us? Raise us up to earn money in the fastest and best ways possible? Did they make a mannequin with bells to teach you to rifle through pockets until you could grab the money without shaking a single bell? What in the world were we thinking?"

She paused out of breath. Her eyes growing wild with her thoughts as she tried to remember her mother. Did she live long enough to make a difference in Symfora's life? Was her grandmother the one pushing her into this life. Her family had been in this community for so long that she couldn't remember anything else.

"Is there anything else? Could we have been astrologers, gypsies or doctors? Running free and roaming. Learning the stars or the herbs. Perhaps I should have been a midwife. Nah, all that blood and little crying brats. No thank you! But I would have made a find protestor. I have learned so much and yet I feel like there is so little here. So little to offer when people give so much."

Mario was about to speak but she noticed and cut him off. Her last thought came out in a rush of breath.

"Would you have wanted to be something different? Do something different with your life?"

Mario had never thought too hard about it. He was always rescuing damsels from their wild and willful ways. He had never known anything else but he knew he enjoyed what he did. He figured his friend was having another one of her moments where her thoughts went too deep. So he merely shook his head and took her arm. They were soon carrying on their walk through the city and the rain.

The moment had passed for Symfora and she was soon chatting about the next party they would go to. Who they would surely see there and what sort of things they might do to make another boring party much more interesting for them both.
