Same old faces? Started by: TonyN on Apr 05, '18 11:59

Tony had been sitting in one of the bars, just down the road from The Damned headquarters. He had been talking about past mobsters, some of which happened to be on the wall of the bar he was drinking at, almost like celebrities they were, except a lot more powerful. These guys were the old school, the hall of famer's and at their peak they were some of the most influential people of our time, changing the course of history as they lived. As Tony looked around at the pictures of these famous faces within the mafia world, he noticed that a lot of them resembled one another. The same eyes here and there, the same nose on another, some looked almost identical and at one point Tony had to look at the names underneath just to be sure these weren't the same people.

Although they had sometimes gone by different names, often they would be descendants from an ancient blood line, it seemed like it was the same bloodlines always rising to power.

Tony enquired to a guy sitting down the bar from him about this, the man had clearly had twice the amount Tony had as he couldn't seem to comprehend Tony's question and had responded with a blank look.

"Why is it, it's the same old faces that we see rise to power?" Tony asked to himself.

Over the years it had seemed like it is always the same bloodlines rising to power, the same faces are in and amongst those pulling the strings, the likes of SpikeS, Curtis, JTG, Grin, First, Visas and more.

Noticing the mans questions another guy decided to add in his two cents.

"It might be because these people play the game of life differently to the rest, they know how to work the angles, how to rise to the top and be in and amongst those who can call the shots. All of them are resourceful, hard working, have a broad knowledge of what this place is and how best to manipulate. Some people just aren't cut out for the bigger picture, some don't want to control the world or be the most powerful, they're happy to play second fiddle and to just go on surviving for as long as possible. Others just don't have the knack for it, they can't hack being the big guy and that's why the more stronger personalities will often shine through the rest. When you've had good teaching passed down from generation to generation, you learn how best to play the system and when you're able to perfect playing that game, you will often find yourself at the top sooner rather than later."

As you quietly drink and listen to the conversation between the two at the bar, you decide to throw your own opinion in.

I actually appreciate your insights on this matter. For some reason you'd expect this observation to be some kind of complaint, but in this case it seems a recognition of sorts. I think that's fair. Often people can associate negative sentiments with those who hold power, but like most of those people will admit themselves, it's an inevitable part of holding power for a prolonged period. Given the nature of this world, wielding power means disappointing some people over time. Granted some have perhaps taken it to extremes that were uncalled for.

Anyway, whoever rises to some form of power is able to because others willingly submit to it. Many trust and depend on the words and direction of few out of insecurity or uncertainty about their own capabilities or position within a hierarchy. This happens in all layers of life. Leaders lead because they dare to make the call. It's not by default the best call to make, but they dare make it. People follow that confidence because they belive in it, or because they lack their own sense of direction. Neither is necessarily wrong, but it is simply the reason that direction is determined by a select few.

If this community sees a rise to power of similar names as you claim, that's not necessarily an issue.
It simply shows the contrast of skill, determination and identity of few vs the many.

Lucius pulls an old memoir he had found in his great grandfather's belongings. He skims to a part of the writing that had peaked his interest in the man's speech.

"And lo and behold, I saw these dons; as I was a hand, sending gold bars to the gods into the sky. From which rained down protection and various perks that their hearts desired. From there they built their ability with the gun, their bodyguards increased, and their reaches met no bounds. From this, they grew to be an all dancing protected bunch of the Mafia world."

Lucius closes the book from which the memoirs were held, shrugged his shoulders and wandered off to his families HQ.
