I don't know if this has been discussed before, but every time I do a petty crime it's robbing the local post office.
Those places must be hectic as all hell if so many people rob them. But how accurate is such to real life? How often were post offices actually targeted by criminals in the 1930's?
I don't particularly mind which way this conversations goes, I'm just curious. And very new to roleplaying/writing in this genre. I used to do military-focused roleplay whenever I did historical... And with Hetalia characters no less. |

Yeah. Sounds like a heck of a historical accuracy issue. For the record I was asking my Mom- she used to work at the Post Office in a tiny town in West Virginia during the 70's and some of the 80's. And apparently even then, mail theft and so on were pretty rampant in the big cities. And that was after a lot of security had been added into the US postal system. So the more I think about it, the more this whole petty crime thing is pretty believable in that sense. |

Mail theft in post offices are actually still rampant in some big cities... although now they are more connected with terrorism activities than small crimes. As a historian, I can tell you that mail theft was far more prevalent in rural areas during the early 20th Century. There are at least a dozen noteworthy robberies during this period including several train heists. However, as to your question of the historical accuracy in holding up a post office regularly during the 1930s - it certainly would fit the narrative we know. Unfortunately, bank robberies always seemed to attract more attention, particularly at that time because what money was in that bank could literally be yours they were stealing. So you can imagine the hypersensitivity at that time to local heists. |

Not sure how often post offices were hit then but it does sound believable - though I recall hearing 7/11 opened in 1927 or so meaning possible but I doubt they were common yet. |

Fascinating! This is certainly giving me ideas for my character's backstory too. Mostly the idea of her having started off on the criminal life by having smuggled away small yet valuable postage parcels in order to pawn the valuable items and actually have food to eat that hadn't been sitting in the garbage. I mean if someone's desperate enough they'll do some pretty ridiculous sounding things to survive. ... And eventually it develops into full on Kleptomania or some other psychological disorder. |
