Minions walks along the streets, looking left and right as he goes on his way. He picks at his suit, getting all the little bits of gunpowder off before anyone can notice. He looks down at his shoes, dusty, he would have to get some cleaning done later, but not now. Things had to be done before the day finished. Minion continued his walk along the streets he knew so well, taking one left turn after another, then changing to right turns, and finally he stopped. "Debate Walkway" they called it, and as Minion looked around, he could see why. Mafioso after Mafioso after Mafioso were lining the walkway standing on soap boxes, addressing there own little crowd of listeners. "What's the gossip today then?" Minion thought to himself as he started walking on his way again As Minion began walking, passing speaker after speaker, the debates started to get muddles up in his head, and he couldn't think straight. When he noticed a gap, he quickly shifted a soapbox there and jumped on top of it before anyone else could. "Well, now that my head seems a to be a little straighter, I'll try to talk. Look around you, go on, take a good look. Notice all the groups? All the public speakers speaking about any topic that comes to mind? Yeah, I noticed that too. Well, as much as this is in contradiction to what I am doing now. I'll say it anyway" Minion clears his throat, trying to gather more attention "Does anybody actually take in what these people are saying? Or are they just another person, rambling on about some topic you have absolutely no interest in whatsoever, you merely participate in them to make yourself look good? "How many of you listen to these people, and use what they have said in this complex life of ours? Do any of you? "Me, well, sometimes I will hear something I genuinly am interested in, and I will participate, but most the time, it's just another person, speaking about something, possibly even them themselves don't really care about. As I said before, just to make themselves 'look good' and get involved in the community" Minion takes a deep breath, and a swig from his flask "No, no, don't get me wrong. Conversation is great, community involvement is what we all need, but with so many people talking about so many different things, it could get out of hand. "I'd much rather us be talking in groups rather than shooting at eachother in another Mob War, but then again, some of these debates are the prime factor to why wars start, not many times, but it has happened before, and I could honestly say it will happen again "As I said before, don't think I'm totally against a bit of friendly gossip, and some disagreements, those that don't lead to violent solutions, but do we need THIS many debates? Every single day, or even every couple of hours, while so many other debates are going on, there will be another one that starts, and people end up being involved in many debates." Minion smiles, as the crowd begin to pull a face "Yes, I know, that is exactly what I have done, started a debate while there are other going on. But let's see how many people actually pay attention to what I have said, and how many just disregard it as another pointless debate, but still participate. Let the duscussions begin" |

With so much emphasis put on "street presence", I think people tend to come forward to speak on anything. Subjects get repetitive over time, but it's true, what is there to say that hasn't already been said? That being said, I think people tend to brush over the worn out topics. On the flipside, many of the "original" topics that are started revolve around inside jokes, coffeeshop cliques, and well known names and organizations. This alienates those that are new around here, and in turn, these topics are skipped over by them. Perhaps topics get old, redundant, cheesy, and skipped over, but at least people are trying. Maybe there shouldn't be so much emphasis on this "street presence", but I'd rather see the same old topics discussed and ignored, rather than dead streets. |

*she lights a cigarette as she ponders the question* I don't feel that the debates are useless. Even when I don't find myself having a response to the ideas presented I usually learn something interesting. If not about the way our society works then at least about the person who is speaking. I think the idea of 'street presence' is to learn someone's personality. *she drops the butt of her cigarette on the ground and crushes it under the heel of her shoe; seeming to pause and gather her thoughts* Now, I do know that some topics get run through over and over again. This does get tiresome, and some may feel it is a way of just getting seen talking on the corner. However, some of them do bring up new topics and there are gems said even during some of the more dull conversations. So I don't think many people disregard the debates and discussions on the streets. I think you can see this by the activity that is still present here. It isn't often the streets are empty and silent. I think that those that do disregard them are missing out on some important, fun things. The kind of things that make living this dangerous life worth it. (Well that and all the booze...) |

Minion smiles, and looks over to the two participants "Thank you for your views on the subject, they are appreciated. I do agree with both of you. As you have said, some debates are interesting, and draw in a lot of attention and publicity, but on the other other, some less interesting debates will get either none, or very few participants. "Thank you once again for your input. If there is anybody else wishing to share their views, come forward." |
