The night was going smoothly... Hope had no idea what was planned for her or that the city itself was rising to accept her as the new Godmother. All of the plans were in place, and Hope had just walked in to the nearly vacant bar with Garth in tow. Everyone let her flounder for a bit, but then L.A. descended upon The Phoenix in tandem. Elyan and his pack gladly joined in the fray to celebrate with the city. Everyone grabbed drinks and mingled as Alexander Knight showcased his talent behind the bar; both in mixing drinks and serenading the ladies...And a few gentlemen. Renegade grabbed a drink and raised it high, yelling for a toast. His words were inspiring, and had everyone calling for Hope to make a speech. "SPEECH! SPEECH! SPEECH!" the excited crowd chanted as their beloved city leader was finally exalted in her hostile take over! Elyan was certainly as excited as the next to hear her words of encouragement and wisdom for the city's future. Everyone cheered loudly as the small stature of Hope began to peak over the crowd as she climbed on top of her bar stool. Praise erupted... And that's when chaos fell upon the night. Elyan heard it, probably before anyone else did... The click of the metal hammer of a gun pulling back and locking in place. He turned toward the sound, but the loud crack of noise breaking through the sound barrier quickly disoriented him. A gun had gone off, and in such a crowded and condensed place it made the pressure change worse as the air quickly expanded around the heat. Elyan felt it in his ears, and he could feel the pain of the rest of his pack as well... But then it dawned on him... Someone had been shot, but who? As if all the thoughts and pain had run through his head in an instant, he turned just in time to see Hope start to tumble from the stool. A second shot went off and he saw it catch her shoulder... Then a third, but it looked to have missed. He turned to look toward the sound and noticed Shomecossee and Demitri both tearing out of the back door... A few others followed suit. Turning back to Hope, he knew he needed to help her. His best trackers had taken off after the enemy, or at least to gone to defend the homestead from attack. Wherever they went, he knew they would handle themselves fine. They were his Pack after all, and he trusted them. So his attention was on Hope... He rushed to her, pushing a few people out of the way, and quickly found Garth's gun aimed at his head. "You sure I'm the one you want to use that on?" He eyed Garth warily before Hope's bodyguard dropped his gun. "You're just, you worked with that Cheese guy... I wasn't sure if we could trust you since-" "NOT the time! Garth!" Elyan griped before looking back to Hope. "Shit, Hope, you're going to be alright. It really doesn't look that bad." He grinned as he lied through his teeth. She smiled up, knowing he was lying, but the appreciation was in her eyes. He looked at the bar, everyone still frantically either rushing about, or just beginning to pick their heads up over whatever they'd dove behind. "ALEX!" Elyan yelled, knowing the young swooner was probably still tucked behind the bar. "I NEED ALCOHOL! NOW!" "You and me both bu-" one half drunk patron started before he saw Hope lying on the ground bleeding. He froze, then turned and lost his previous drinks on the floor. Alexander peeked over the bar top and, upon seeing Hope, he quickly scanned the bottles until he found the strongest swill that the Phoenix kept and hopped the bar. A quick slide of his ass over the counter top and he hit the ground sprinting, skidding and sliding to a halt next to Elyan. He looked up and took the bottle, "That'll do..." Looking around, he pointed at two of the other member of L.A., Aislin and Jonny the Con. "Both of you, I'm gonna need help, get over here!" He pleaded as he put the cork of the bottle in his mouth and tugged until it popped open. Leaning down closely, he looked into Hope's eyes, apologies oozing from within him even though they were not spoken. "Someone get me some pliers! AND A STRIP OF LEATHER!" he yelled out before gripping Hope's hand and waiting. He couldn't do anything until she had something to bite, and there were people to hold her down, and someone to dig in her shoulder and retrieve the two metal pellets that were buried inside of her.

Damn I love Los Angeles Aislin thought as she sipped on a martini that Alexander had made. The whose who of LA was in the building tonight to celebrate our lovely Hopes accession to Godmother publicly, for she had always been our Godmother privately.
Aislin recrossed her legs as she listened to those around her. She was a woman of very few words, but she was also a woman who saw everything. The room was well lit, but smoke heavily permeates the air, the smell of cigar smoke and whisky clung to nostrils with every inhale and exhale.
After Alexander's speach Hope with the help of those closest to her stood up on a bar stool. Everyone stood along with her and gave her a round of applause. The ever humble Hope began her speech by saying, "Thank you my people of Los Angeles, my friends, and last but certainly not least my family. I am honored..." Her voice trails off just as a man enters from the kitchen.
Things happened quickly after that. Aislin rose in time to get off a shot before being tackled by her bodyguard, she heard two more gun shots quickly follow. Chaos reigned. "she's been hit!" Someone shouted.
Aislin landed hard jarring her shoulder in the process. "Sorry boss." Ricky D said. Aislin nudged Ricky D aside. "Get off me you big bastard. You ruined my shot!"
Getting up Aislin looked around attempting to find the injured party and to her dismay Hope sat on the floor with blood slowly pooling beneath her from a wound on arm. A t-shirt was wrapped tightly around her arm to stop the flow of blood, but Aislin knew that more drastic measures would need to be taken and soon.
Aislin moved passed her bodyguard and rushed to Hope's side and the sweet smell of metallic was overwhelmingly intense. Reaching for Hope's hand Aislin locked her gaze with Hope's, "His entire family is dead, no one is safe. You do not come to our city, shoot our matriarch and live. His head and those that follow him are yours on a fucking platter. I swear on my papas life."
Rushing out the door with Ricky Don following closely behind Aislin turned the corner and ran smack into her worst nightmare.
"Miceli Bontate, what the fuck are you doing here?" Aislin raised the gun pointed it at his head. Her finger placed on the trigger trembled. Miceli placed his forehead on the gun knowing she wouldn't shoot him. He looked Aislin square in the eye and said, "Do it Ma belle. Shoot me, shoot me!" Miceli demanded. Aislin looked her nightmare in the eyes and pulled the gun away before looking away.
Miceli took a step towards Aislin and Aislin took a step back. "Ma belle..." His voice trails off just as shots are heard around the corner.
Aislin didn't even spare Miceli a final glance as she and Ricky D who did what bodyguards do eased off into the background at the sight of Miceli raced behind Aislin.

I like coming to The Phoenix, it's quiet and their service is great. Tonight was going to be different. Word had gone out that the family was throwing Don Hope a celebration on her promotion to Godmother. I showed up early, as is custom for me, and walked to the bar. I waived the bartender over, "A drink kind sir." I winked. I took my drink over to the small table in the corner. I glanced around at the few folks here, a handful of regulars. As I waited for the party to begin I reflected on the past few days..... I heard the door open sometime later and watched as Godmother Hope and her bodyguard Garth walked in. I only met her once, maybe twice, but knew her on sight. Garth, by reputation only. She looked around the place and walked to the bar. She ordered a drink and sat down. It was time. The door opened again and family poured through. I got up to join the crew. We all gathered around Hope with smiles and handshakes and toasts. Drinks began to flow. As the cheers and laughter slowly died, someone shouted "SPEECH! SPEECH!" We all joined in. After a few moments, Hope got up on the bar stool and was about to speak. The first shot I heard was close by, the next two behind the crowd. I, like almost everyone, hit the floor. I turned towards the sound of the first shot and saw Aislin looking towards the door. I quickly looked and saw a shadowy figure duck out. I got up and asked those around me if they were ok. I looked to where our Godmother was and saw her on the floor, blood running down her right side. Aislin was kneeling beside her. She said a few words and headed for the door to give chase. I checked to make sure I had extra bullets with me and was gonna follow. Over the chaos I heard someone say ".....gonna need help, get over here!" I turned a saw Elyan next to Hope pouring alcohol on the wound. I ran over and squatted down next to Elyan, he was yelling for pliers and strips of leather. I took the alcohol from Elyan and set it down. I spoke to Hope, "Ma'am, I need to see how bad it is." as I was about to pull back the makeshift t-shirt dressing two hands grabbed me, one on each shoulder. "What the hell are you doing?" Eylan and Garth said pretty much in unison. "She needs medical treatment, we need to get her to the emergency room." I stated as I shook the hands off me. "No shit?" Garth said "And you are?" he asked in a not so nice way. "I'm Jonny. I was a field medic, second battalion 16th Infantry, battle of Somme. I need to stop the bleeding." The authority in Hope's voice got our attention, "Damn it Garth! Let him do it." I pulled back the bandage, two bullet holes. The higher one was a through and through. Pressure front and back to stop the bleeding. The second one was lower, no exit wound. "Shit!" I said. "Ma'am, I am gonna have to take the bullet out. I won't lie to you ... it's going to hurt like a son of a bitch." Her eyes were strong and she nodded quickly to me. "Elyan? Pliers?" I asked. He handed me the little tool box the bartender had given him. I quickly opened it and found a pair of needle nose pliers and a pen knife. "Best it's gonna get." I said and asked a few people around to hold her down. I grabbed the alcohol bottle and poured it over the pliers and the knife. I used the knife to open the wound a little. This would allow the pliers to pull the bullet out without tearing more skin and tissue. Tears rolled down her face a bit, but by God, Hope didn't move. The worse was yet to come. I took a deep breath, held it and leaned over our Godmother. I used two fingers to hold the wound open and, gently as I could, used the pliers to try and grab the slug. I'm glad I asked for people to hold her, as soon as I found the slug and started to pull it out she started to struggle. I know that feeling and she was doing better then most. I worked as quick as I could and got the damn thing out. I set it aside for a moment and retied the t-shirt into a better dressing. "Garth. Hold it here and here and apply pressure." I said backing away as he moved in. I picked up the slug and looked at it. I walked over to Elyan. "Small caliper, a thirty eight is my guess. She should be ok until we get to the hospital."

Ely seemed confused as Aislin grabbed his arm and mumbled something about taking care of the shooter. "No - wai-..." It was too late. Aislin was already halfway to the door as she pushed through the crowd of people. With a sigh of resignation, Elyan turned back to Jonny. Apparently, in his befuddlement from Aislin's rushing off, Elyan was pouring the alcohol on Hope's wound... Jonny took the bottle from him and set it down. After the exchange from Garth and Jonny, and then Hope's assertive command, things were seemingly back on track. Hopefully, they would be able to get Hope stable and then they could transport her. The other bartender rushed a small toolbox over and passed it to Ely, who happily passed it to Jonny as he asked for pliers. While the man looked through the small box, Ely stood and removed his belt, folding it in two, and then sticking it in Hope's open, awaiting mouth. "Bite down when I say, and don't stop until I tell you too, understand?" Hope's determined nod reassured him that she'd be okay... Even if she left the bar and cried once she was healed, she would be okay. It wasn't easy being someone's target practice. Ely knew that far too well. Jonny continued to prep his materials, alcohol over the pliers and knife to sterilize the tools before putting them to use. As he leaned over to talk to Hope a bit, Elyan waved the gentleman that Jonny had summoned over. "Hold her legs, I've got her arm, Jonny has her other. Hope? Now would be the time to bite. Don't let go until I say so, okay?" Hope grunted as she bit her teeth into his belt, nodding emphatically as Jonny cut her arm open. She handled herself quite well as he opened the wound further, but Elyan could almost smell the seething fear rolling off her, pouring from her pores as a cold sweat covered her body. Goosebumps formed across her body, forearms mostly, and Ely readjusted himself to hold her again. "Okay, relax your jaw for a moment." Ely coached her, allowing Jonny a chance to prepare himself. As he took a deep breath, Ely nodded to Hope who bit down hard again. This time, however, it wasn't quite enough. The pain of the pliers digging around in her arm made her writhe and squirm against them. Ely placed his hand smack dab in the middle of her chest. She glared, but there was no time for dignity. Placing his weight on her made it harder for her to jerk her arms around and risk more tearing and injury. Instead of squirming, Hope gripped whatever she could with her free hand and squeezed hard. Elyan grunted, making Jonny stop and look at him with a brow raised. "Nevermind me! Focus!" Ely grunted out, and Jonny complied. He made quick work of the situation and soon had the slug out of Hope's arm. Everything seemed as if it wouldn't take a turn for the worst, though blood loss and infection would now be the biggest worries. Ely stood and readjusted himself before pulling his belt from Hope's mouth. She went to say something, but Ely covered her lips with his hand. "Rest, Godmother... We'll get this taken care of." He stepped away from the group as he put his belt back on, rubbing where Hope had almost bitten clean through. He smirked, taking note of the strong jaw she had. No wonder she was a great leader, a bite as bad as her bark. He chuckled to himself at his own joke, considering the source, before regaining his composure as Jonny walked up. "Small caliber, maybe a thirty-eight you say, hmm?" Ely repeated back to him. "Well if everyone doesn't have one of those... Hopefully, someone will catch the bastard that took this chance. I'll make sure they are hanged by the feet til death." He grumbled... Breaking the man's neck was too quick of a punishment for shooting his dear Hope. She'd made him and his pack feel welcome in L.A. She had offered them safe haven, and Elyan was nothing if not loyal. Call it his -nature-. He looked over to Hope and then to Jonny. "Come on, maybe we can flag down a car... Or steal one." Ely looked back to Garth, "Keep pressure on that! You understand? If she dies at this point, I'll hold you just as responsible!" Garth flipped Ely off, and both Ely and Jonny yelled back at him in unison... "PRESSURE!" Garth almost jumped at the sheer volume and quickly reapplied his grip to keep her from bleeding out. Once outside, Elyan turned and stopped... "Wait, you have a car here, right?" Ely asked... "Or do we actually need to try and steal one?" He was serious, but the thought made him chuckle a bit... Steal a car, save a Godmother. This was truly turning in to one HELL of a night!

"No, I have a car. It's just down the street." I told Elyan. We went out the door, both careful and alert. A block away I found my car, boxed in by two others, "Well, shit hell and damnation." I said. I looked up and down the street. The most accessible car near us was a Duesenberg Model J . "That'll work just fine." I said smiling. We ran over to it and got in. The keys were in the ignition and I started it up. The purr of the straight eight was as beautiful as the car itself. I shifted into gear and raced up the street to the bar. I left the car running and got out. Reaching inside my coat, I pulled out my Colt 45. "Elyan, go and get Hope. I'll stay here on guard." He was off in a heartbeat. He ran inside and I looked around, trying to see everywhere at the same time. The sound of a approaching vehicle got my attention. I leaned against the car and concealed the Colt slightly behind my back trying my best impression of a bored chauffeur. I glanced at the car as it drove by, just a family heading home. The boy in the back smiled as they drove by, I smiled back relieved. Waiting is boring, waiting while on edge is a different monster altogether. Time has no aspect or meaning, I know Elyan has only been gone a few minutes, but it felt like an hour. "Come on, lets go." I said as if trying to hurry up the night. The door opened about two years later, it seemed. Elyan came out, did a quick look around and glanced at me. I nodded the coast was clear. He leaned in, said something, and stepped aside. Two of our crew came out followed by Garth with Hope at his side. He had his arm around her for support. He saw me and they started escorting her towards the car. Elyan followed closely, he had a sense of awareness about him that seemed almost unnatural. I opened the back door and held it as they approached. Garth carefully helped Hope into the car and climbed in beside her. I closed the door and thanked the two for their help. As they headed back towards the bar, I noticed a few people looking at us from the windows. Concern on their faces. I looked up and down the street before I turned to get in the car and saw Elyan do one last quick look around himself before getting in the passenger side. Looking in the mirror at Hope I said quickly, "It should only take us about fifteen minutes to get to the hospital." She nodded in reply. The drive was, amazingly, uneventful. I pulled into the ER driveway and got as close to the hospital door as I could. Quickly Elyan and I got out. He took a few steps away from the car and scanned the driveway. I went into the ER and told the nurse on duty we had a gunshot victim outside. If she was shocked it did not show on her face. She called for a doctor on the intercom. I ran out to the car and opened the back door, Garth exited first and carefully helped Hope out. Two nurses came out with a wheelchair. They quickly got Hope seated, and Garth and the two nurses rushed her into the ER. I walked over to Elyan, "So far, so good." I said. He nodded without comment, but continued to stare into the darkness, watching.

The air was thick and the atmosphere seemed to choke off every sense; sight, scent, sound, everything except for touch. Perhaps it was the chaos driven events thus far that had every hair on the back of Elyan's neck standing, or perhaps it was something else entirely. He stared off into the darkness beyond the city lights. Something felt off... Why tonight? Who had done this? Was there motive to kill the Godmother, or merely send a message? Was it a crime of opportunity, a botched plan, or maybe even a perfectly executed plan? What if Hope wasn't the real target at all but just a distraction? Maybe they knew the whole city would practically shut down to protect her... Maybe they- His train of thought was interrupted as he heard Jonny walk up behind him. He took a deep breath and cleared his mind, continuing to stare off into the night. "So far, so good." Ely nodded but remained quiet. Opening his jacket, he reached in and produced a small cigarette holder and a zippo. He tugged one for himself and offered another to Jonny and would light it if he joined. He put flame to his own cigarette and puffed until the end glowed a bright orange and he felt the smoke fill his lungs. He held it for a moment before exhaling slowly with a sigh. "What the fuck happened?" It was rhetorical... It was obvious what had transpired, but the hidden question beneath was crystal clear; -WHY- had it happened? Ely took a second drag off of his cigarette before finally turning to look at Jonny. "We shouldn't wait out here. Someone needs to be with Hope through this, and I don't trust Garth by himself. Not that he isn't capable, but they were brazen enough to shoot our Hope, our fucking beacon of light, in the middle of ALL of us... What's to stop them if it's just Garth there?" Ely turned to head inside, jabbing his cigarette into a standing ashtray by the door to the ER as he entered. He made his way to the front desk, assuming Jonny was on his heels. "I'm looking for the gunshot victim, Hope? Is she going to need surgery? Or will she just be in the trauma center?" "Actually, they've got her in surgery right now to patch up the wounds. Whoever removed the bullet, the doctor said it was obvious they'd had -some- form of training. He'd be glad to have you help here." She offered a weak smile, knowing it wasn't the time or place to be offering a job, but thought she'd relay the message. "That would be the other gentleman who is with me. He's the genius behind removal... We'd have taken care of her ourselves had we had the proper tools." He offered a smile, "But I'll make sure he knows he's invited to take a stab at some of these patients." It was a horrible, rotten joke, but the nurse cracked up and lost it. Her sense of humor was... interesting to say the least... "Take a stab at them!" she repeated between breaths... "Ohhhhhh that's a good one. That made my night sir, thank you!" She walked over to a clipboard on the wall... "She'll be moved to room three-oh-seven after surgery. You can wait there or in the waiting room... I can page for you after surgery if you'd like." "No no. I'd prefer no paging, and do me a favor..." Ely slipped a piece of paper to her with a room number and pulled her close, whispering quietly in her ear. "I've got it on good faith that this room is currently empty. Tell no one, make sure -no one- knows of the change... But this is the room she will go to." The look on the nurse's face was confused at first, but she began to understand and nodded as she pulled away. "Yes sir, we'll make sure to keep her condition in mind." She was good. A cover for the true nature of the whisper in mere seconds. Maybe she should work -FOR- L.A.'s finest, instead of just as a nurse. Lord knows she'd make more money working with the Mob. Ely made his way back over to Jonny and placed his hand on the man's shoulder... "She'll be in room three -" Ely tapped his shoulder once, "- oh -" then squeezed his shoulder "- seven..." and lastly tapped it five times again. Hopefully, Jonny would get the hint, but Ely purposely wanted anyone who might be listening to think that Hope was still going to room 307. Instead, however, Hope was being relocated to room 105 where she would be heavily guarded by family, and -no one- would get in to see her without being checked, and without an escort. No one would see Hope alone unless she commanded it, and no one would be the sole guardian of the door. Simple, necessary precautions to keep their Godmother safe until the culprit was fitted and swimming. "I'm going to go outside and smoke another cigarette... She' in surgery now, but they offered you a job. Said you were handy with that bullet removal." He chuckled and gave Jonny another pat on his shoulder. "If you go to the room, then I'll meet you there in a bit... Otherwise, you're free to join me outside if you'd like. The fresh air helps me clear my head sometimes."

With Hope in surgery, there was little to do so I followed Elyan out to have a smoke as well. He offered me a cigarette. I took it. "Nice job on the tap code, took me a second to figure it out. I understand why. Until we know, we can't take a chance." I said, Elyan looked at me and nodded in agreement. I looked out into the ER parking lot of the hospital and enjoyed the quiet. "HA!" I barked, not meaning to startle Elyan, "... take a stab at some of these patients." I snorted. A laugh, even a small one, does wonders for relieving stress. We finished our cigarettes in silence. I snuffed mine out on the bottom of my shoe a put the butt in my pocket until I could find a garbage can. "Thanks for the smoke Elyan, I'm going to go up to Hope's room and check out the surroundings. See where any threat might come from. I'll see you up there." As I passed the nurses station, the nurse told me that Hope will be out of surgery in a half hour or so. I thanked her and continued on to room 105. The room was halfway down the hallway. I went in to make sure there were no other doors into the room. Nice, only one way in and out. I thought. Plenty of hallway on either side, we will know who is coming before they get there. Elevators and nurses desk at that end and stairs at the other. I walked to both ends of the hallway and made note of the five other rooms. Besides 105, there were four rooms for patients, two were empty, and a janitors closet near the stairs. I walked to the nurses station and ask where the restroom was. She pointed me in the right direction. I went in and splashed cold water on my face. It's going to be a while until our crew gets here. Gotta stay alert. I splashed my face some more, washed my hands and combed my hair. I went back to the nurses station and asked about the two patients. One was a teenager with a broken leg the other was a old woman in a coma. I thanked the nurse and went back down the hall. I grabbed a chair from each of the empty rooms and set them on either side of Hope's door. The stairwell door opened and Elyan came through. He walked over to me, also noticing the other doors. "Two are occupied, two empty and a janitors closet on the end." I explained, I also told him about the two patients. "It looks safe for now." I said. A small look of relief briefly touched Elyan's face. We sat down in the chairs to wait. It didn't take long. The "bing" of the elevator put us both on our feet. The doors opened and two nurses were pushing the gurney with Hope on it towards us. Garth, followed close behind. I opened the door and held it as they brought her in. While the nurses were setting up the IV, I filled Garth in on whats happened. As the nurses were leaving one stopped and told us that Hope should be awake in a few hours. I closed the door quietly and sat in one of the chairs I placed earlier, Garth came over a took the other chair, Elyan leaned on the wall opposite of us. "I want to thank you Jonny and you too Elyan for what you guys did for Hope back at the bar and here." Garth said, "It was a lot to ask for." For a man like Garth to say thanks, he had to swallow some pride and admit he could not do it all alone. "It was for Hope, it was without question. And a pack sticks together." Elyan stated. I agreed with Elyan "It was nothing, besides I got to drive a Duesenberg." I said. A few moments later the nurse that Elyan was talking to earlier came down the hall. "Excuse me, but there are some guys downstairs asking to go up to room 307." she said. "Show me." was all Elyan said as he walked down the hall. The nurse quickly followed. "Now what the hell?" I asked Garth. He got up, put he back against the wall and rested his right hand inside his coat. I took the hint and followed suit against the other wall. Elyan came back down with eight of our crew in toe. Garth and I both relaxed a bit. Elyan was directing traffic, two guys at the door, two at each end of the hall and two went back down to the lobby. With that settled he came back over to stand with us. I looked at both "We have some time before she wakes up, lets go get some coffee." I said. "Oh yeah." and "Indeed." were the replies. As we walked I asked Garth were he was while Hope was being operated on. "Watching them, of course." he said. "They let you in there? While they worked?" I asked. Garth just looked at me for a bit, "Observation window. Don't be a dumbass Jonny." he smirked. "Oh. Right. It's been a long day. Where the hell is the coffee maker at?" I huffed and quickened my pace. I could hear laughter from behind as Garth and Elyan followed.
