An evening stroll. Started by: StJames on Jun 26, '18 22:17

Jay was walking alone along the sidewalk leading up a large bridge that seemed to stretch on forever over a massive river. It was raining hard in the cool night air as he continued to trudge on one step at a time. It seemed like an eternity, but after an hour he found himself at the summit of the bridge looking down. He could hardly see the waves in the river as the rain blocked his view. All below seemed black. He stared into the blackness with the thought that the emptiness he was looking at was the very same that he felt inside.

His friend was gone. His friend decided that life was not worth living in the end. There was no knowing why. No one could know for certain. Jay felt a cold numb throughout his body before his hands seemed to grip the guard rails. Before he realized what he was doing he was on the other side, facing a plummet certain to end anyone's existence. He hands gripped the guard rails now from the opposite side. The rain whipped across his face in a fierce manner making his eyes squint hard and his grip begin to slip slightly.

Jay grinned as the sudden realization that he could be dead any moment hit him. He was literally closer to death than life at this very moment. One false move, one unlucky gust of wind, even so much as a loss of concentration whatsoever could spell the end for this man's life. He couldn't understand how someone so great, so much better than him could decide to throw it all away. It left a scar on Jay. He tried to brush it off as best he could, but at the end of the day there he was only inches from death.

He wish he could just ask why. He wanted to know if it was worth it. He wanted to know his friend was happy. He wanted to know if his friend made a mistake and now suffered an endless torment. He wanted to join his friend. He wanted to enjoy the eternal peace. He wanted to be there for his friend for support in the eternal torture that awaited them. He wanted, he needed to shed his loneliness that engulfed him when he heard the news. The news that the last time he'd seen his friend was just that, the last time.

Jay's train of thought was interrupted by a sudden burst of wind that whipped rain around hard enough to sting Jay's face. The sudden force caused Jay's right hand and left leg to lose their placement and he began to flail for a moment before regaining his stance. His wrist slammed hard on the handrail and came loose from his wrist falling down towards the river. Jay counted as he watched it fall. Twenty seconds passed before he saw the smallest sign of a splash beneath him. He looked straight out now, the sky dark grey only lit dimly from the moon behind the storm.

Saturn hadn’t expected to be out at the noir hours of the night, often opting to reclude at her current miniscule abode and shelter herself from whatever the day had thrown at her- perhaps as a way to forget about past events or hang on to whatever shred of innocent she convinced herself she had- but events that happened prior had led the girl to sleeping in and missing not just her typical morning jog away from the blistering city, but a job for the boss. For Saturn, this meant the rest of the day was spent working her ass off. As she felt the wind guide her blonde locks behind her, trailing in the surprisingly crisp autumn wind laced with the sharp onslaught of rain droplets the girl found herself endeared by the environment she’d never before let herself explore.

Rounding the corner of the stone path the girl’s hands worked their way to her hair, pulling the stubborn blond locks from her forehead against the harsh wind so she’d  be able to get a clear view of the trail infront of her. What she did not however expect to see was the back of a man, casting a harrowing shadow against the bridge he hunched against. At first the grey orbed girl thought she was seeing things, as her glasses didn’t mark the usual place on her facial frame, instead they sat in her pocket so they wouldn’t come in harms way during her run, however she found as she squinted against the nasty autumn dew that there was indeed a person against the ledge. The wind picked up as she observed the stature and the body seemed to struggle with keeping their balance, as if they were a mere object of the winds judgment.

Against her better judgment, Saturn’s curiosity kicked in. Was there a logical reason for a man to be embracing the onslaught of one of the seasons most deceitful days infront of the shallow expanse of river? She naively let her legs guide her forwards, her hands crossing against her chest as the intense coolness of the autumn breeze engulfed her frame due to her sudden break in physical action. It was a manner of ensuring she remained warm, of course it was probably fruitless.

Unable to recognise the man from his back profile, and wary of what his intentions were, she kept her distance, letting her voice carry through her thoughts rather than her actions. Her chapped lips open and she let her words call out, laced with concern.

“Oi, mate!”

She found herself resisting moving closer, instead she shifted her feet so she was more firmly planted to the ground and was able to resist the winds mighty push.

“What do ya think you’re doing, you’ll fuckin’ tip into the grave if the wind has it’s way with ya!”

Jay was just about to let out a sigh and let go when he heard the voice of a woman call out. Jay didn't look to see who it was, he was certain whoever it was would leave him alone after being ignored. The he heard her call out once more stating the wind would take him to his grave. This put a grin across Jay's face. He did not look at the woman, but instead spoke calmly, yet loud enough for her to hear him.

"The wind didn't put me here young lady. You can carry on."

Jay leaned forward looking down into the black abyss that was the river. He wanted to jump badly. He wanted to end things, but he wanted to do so alone and with his own thoughts. He needed this girl to leave him. The last thing that he wanted was to put someone else in the same position that he was in. He decided to look over to her and when he did his eyes widened. It was a young girl he had seen around the headquarters. This was certainly not good for either of them.

"You should forget what you've seen here, and go home."

Jay said with a calm, yet insistent tone.

Saturn was beyond concerned, that was a given. If the wind didn’t carry the man to the bridge, then his true intent hinted by the almost content tone of his voice. Before the could further interject the man’s position shifted and her eyes met his own. A chilled breath was carried through to the girls lungs with sudden urgency and she stumbled backwards in alarm- she recognised this man. By his sudden facial flinch Saturn concluded he must had realized her own identity too despite the sweats and the saturated appearance.

A sudden urgency took over the girl’s mind as she surveyed his facial profil, what reason was there for him to be out here with such a solemn glaze in his eyes unless... She forced herself to take quickened steps forward so she was before the man, her arms across her chest with stubborn intent. There was no way she was just going to leave him here and go home. He was higher than her, sure, but it wasn’t an order.

“I should, shouldn’t I?”

The girl let out a huff of annoyance, digging the heel of her sneakers into the ground as she plotted her next move. She knew nothing of this man despite seeing him around a bit, and she had little-to-no place interfering… But morals be damned, he looked out of it.

“But mate, that’d mean I’d have to see you go home too. Things are easier to forget when a mind’s quelled of it’s worries, y’know?”

Keep conversation. That was her tactic. She just needed him to turn away from the bridge, or something. Even if he wasn’t planning anything beyond stupid her mind wouldn’t allow her to leave this place with ease after seeing that look in his eyes.

Jay was in a bit of a trance as he heard the girl speaking to him. He couldn't really make out what she was saying. It was almost as though her voice was a distant echo. Jay let go of the railing with one arm and stretched it out in front of him. The cold wind whipped at it and caused him to spin around and now face the road that was behind him. He saw her again. She seemed to have finished what she was saying so Jay gave her another look.

"Sorry, what were you saying?"

Jay hadn't heard a thing, or at least, he hadn't retained any of it. His mind was someplace else. It felt as though his mind was fading from the reality of the situation he was in and the urge to be with his lost friend. A battle was waging deep with in his psyche. He did not know how this night would end, but he knew one thing. He desperately needed this girl to go away. He scratched his head for a moment before speaking again.

"What's your name anyway? I'm terrible with names..."

Saturn’s eyebrow hitched as the familiar man blatantly told her he wasn’t listening, and she fought the urge to call him out or snap in annoyance, instead she clasped her hands tightly in front of her chest to resist displaying her pissed off demeanour and gave the man a forced quirk of her lips. Observing the mans obscene behaviour Saturn was well aware he wasn’t very focused, perhaps even lost in the world around him rather then the communication that was supposedly occurring between them- it’s like she was speaking to a rusty ass air filter.

“Name’s Saturn. And I was jus’ informing ya it’s easier to forget things, say, seeing you hopelessly devoid of all might by a bridge, if the situation was stranded by both parties.”

She clicked her tongue, one of her clasped hands moving to red on her hip as she took another step towards him. It became a game of tactics to keep this man’s attention and keep him from spiraling mentally to the ill depths of whatever hell he wanted to visit for a holiday. Perhaps Saturn was just acting on pity, she wasn’t sure yet, but all she knew is if she wanted to help she’d have to act quickly. She’d have to keep things short, sweet, and easy for him to keep up with or else she'd lose any attention she'd managed to capture- if any.

“But let’s not dwell on the specifics, aye? Chuck me ya name, then we'll get talkin'."

When the girl spoke her name Jay noticed that he had yet to meet this girl. He didn't want to strike a conversation. He quickly pulled himself back upon the bridge and safe from falling. He shook off the urge to jump with a refreshing urge to continue on. It was not due to any event whatsoever, it was simply, and suddenly, what he wanted. He looked at the girl who seemed confused and asked for his name. Jay took a few steps increasing the distance between them before giving her a nod and a coy grin.

"Have a good night!"

He said before he walked away and jumped into a cab. He was home within minutes and stripped off his soaked clothes and jacket. As he stepped into his shower he turned the knob until the water came out hot. He stood in it for what seemed like ages before climbing out, drying himself off and climbing into bed. He was asleep in seconds and upon waking up the next day he sat up and looked as the sun was beaming through his bedroom window. The day was bright and he smiled.
