Qualities of Leadership Started by: RoRoG on Oct 18, '10 17:53

RoRoG walks out onto the street after watching the events of the past few months and considering all the implications of those actions. Rogues, takedowns, and failed leaders have all affected this entire thing of ours in some way or another. While its old news to the majority of us who have read the diaries of their ancestors repeatedly, RoRoG walked out onto the streets to discuss the topic with the community as a whole.

Would you be prepared to pay the necessary price in order to become a leader of men and women? I'm not out here to claim that I'm perfect or that I'm my opinion is exactly right concerning this topic, however, I think all of us can agree that leadership holds a special responsibility that some people have taken far too lightly. People who have only paid attention to their personal goals, and people who didn't have the patience to allow their family to grow, among others have all lost everything at some point in the last few months. Considering recent events I think it's reasonable to discuss what the responsibilities and qualities of a leader are as far as this thing of ours is concerned.

First of all, any leader is directly responsible for the lives of all those who work underneath them. That specifically means that any action the leader takes will directly affect the lives of everyone who works for him or her. Actions like randomly shooting risks the lives of everyone who works under you and is hugely irresponsible. Ask the recently deceased family members of Magua's or, going further back, the family members of ClarenceWorley's, just to name a few, how important is to work for a leader who will not take lightly the responsibility of keeping those who work under them alive.

These men have claimed that they were too uninterested in our way of life or too drunk to care about the consequences of their actions, respectively. Both of their families have been slain on the streets through no fault of their own other than choosing to follow men who did not honor the responsibility given to them. It has been said before on these streets that when you join a business you are expected to follow the rules and be an honorable member of that operation. I believe that at the same time, a new employee trusts their boss to be stable and provide the best opportunity possible for them to succeed. If you consider searching for a good employer lightly just based on the first offer or mail you receive then you may risk falling into a place where your life is just going to be a chip in the pile of your bosses' stack, ready to be thrown away on a whim.

Another important set of qualities that a leader should have is patience and discretion. Leaders have been seen picking fights they can't win fairly often recently. Men who have demanded things they had no business asking for or even trying to push for power that they didn't have the capacity to take on. In both cases it led to their ruin along with the rest of their city. While what they did caused their death, it can be called the cost of doing business too aggressively. A good leader can judge the capabilities of their city and their employees and come to the realization of where their operation's limits are and would take steps to gradually expand their capabilities over time instead of reaching too far too soon.

Also, as we are all well aware of, there are those people who can't properly lead because their family doesn't have the discipline necessary to exist in this thing of ours. Families full of unpunished rule breakers just don't make money and are bad for business in general. There's no telling when someone who breaks the rules will fly off the handle and do something to harm others who are relatively innocent. None of us are completely innocent of course but the friends and family of those who get randomly shot because some no name C had a bad day are not going to sit by idly and let it happen repeatedly. A good leader had better be able to maintain crew discipline or their family will be testing out a new pair of cement shoes far sooner than they thought they would be.

Those who become known as rogues, people who can't holster their guns and feel their opportunity to gain power is best served by causing chaos, are people who don't have the majority of the qualities I mentioned above. Specifically, they don't have the patience to lead a family in a respectable way, the discretion to know how best to use their gun, and they also don't have respect for the lives of others because their goals are only selfish and serve no purpose other than to satisfy their own need for destruction.

These aren't the only qualities of a good leader, however, with a strong, responsible leader, people who work for them continue to grow and become important, highly respected, members of this thing of ours. Those leaders have the patience and the discretion needed to know which fights to fight, the intelligence to put their family in a position where they have the maximum chance to improve, and get their family to respect their rules and ideology have the best chance to be successful over time. Sometimes good leaders fall despite making all of the right moves due to the circumstances in which they live and the uncontrollable actions of others but finding a good leader is the best place to start when starting in this place of ours.

RoRoG looks around and finds a good place to sit and listen to the replies of various members of the community. He then pours himself a glass of whiskey and awaits the words of his fellow Mafioso.

There are no guarantees in this world. If your family has been to these shores before or for a long period of time you may know what family suits you best but that doesn't mean the boss of that family wont make a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.

If you are knew to these shores then all you have is to believe the people harassing you into joining their family or get lucky and hopefully fit into a functioning family. Still, no promise that family's boss wont make a mistake.

Though, is there any family or any life that is promised? No. There isn't. That is, in my opinion, what keeps many family lines here. The chance. That one percent of the time. The thrill that you may live or die but along the way will make as much money as you can.

With that said. I believe that as a thug looking for a family there is no easy choice, no guaranteed choice, and especially no easy choice on which family to live and die with.

On the other hand, when it comes to being a family head. I think everything that you said is correct, which stirs a few feelings up. When a GF auths a family shouldn't that GF also be responsible for the actions of that family? Even if that family is based in a different city, does that family still no longer serve that GF? If it does, shouldn't its mistakes also be the mistake of a GF? I think they should be if they aren't. Anyone in the position to put someone else in power should also be held responsible for that persons mistakes. It would make people think twice before putting someone into power. Which, in theory, should make the world a better place. Right?

By your opinion, TheDean should be held accountable for Magua's actions then. What, in your opinion, should happen to the Godfather of New York? He authed Magua, he's responsible for him in this scenerio you have painted?

Good point. Well said. I put my foot in my mouth on that one.

Really no one is responsible for the action of someone else unless they ordered that person to do the action. No one can read minds and no one can know what's going through another person's head for sure. All you can do as a leader it give a fair estimation on your people and try to put the best people in your estimation in the right positions and try to guide people on the right path.

A leader can, however, be held responsible for his or her reaction to what someone under them has done. This is where leaders tend to get into trouble. I'm a believer that communication is key to quick and peaceful conflict resolution. It turns a possible bad situation into a chance to help build a bond and create good will between leaders if both leaders are willing to communicate openly and mitigate their expectations by the severity of the action.

People are responsible for their own actions, however leaders are responsible for promoting their button men and when button men act silly it is usually a bad reflection on the leader as they have promoted someone to Made who has then fucked up. We don't say they are responsible for their actions but they were definitely responsible for promoting a fuck up.

GrapeJam, we can't keep passing the blame up til it goes no higher. If leaders fuck up, they should be responsible for their actions, not the people who put them in power, unlike my first point becoming a leader is a totally different kettle of fish, becoming a leader means you must be responsible, so we can't pin their mistakes on the GF's. Unfortunately for you GrapeJam you chose a poor time to use this example, however let's alter the scenario.

No offence intended to Joey or StLouis but they are the only example I can use right now as they are the least powerful city with a GF residing in it, at least from an outsiders point of view. Say Joey authed someone in a different city, that auth then fucked up a few months down the line, should we then blame Joey for this? I should hope not. At least not unless that auth fucked up more or less immediately after setting up. As I said before, we are all responsible for our own actions, especially leaders.

It disgusts me when leaders fuck up without any thought for their members, this is why as you say RoRoG, finding a good leader is the best way to begin your life, but of course this is easier said than done at times.

Whether you are the Godfather of a city with the responsibilty of the entire city on your shoulders, you are setting up captains beneath you or you are simply sponsoring someone. It matters not how well you think you know these people and it sure as hell doesn't mean what was good yesterday, still holds any water today. It is not unlike having a child really. Sure that kid is your child and you have molded and educated that child to the point that you would never not trust them. But I dare any of you to leave a 4 year old child in a room with a kitten for an hour. You won't like what you came back to and it isn't something you expected either. The same can be said of friends, family and allies right here in our world. Ego's, hurt feelings and jealousy will shatter the foundations of any relationship here and make for bad business decisions.
