Bulldog enters the streets from a dark ally, pulls down his sleeves, and straightens his tie. As he walks down the street he waves to Freddy the fruit vendor and grabs himself and apple and continues down the street towards one of the most busy sections of the city He stands and watches as new immigrants get swooped away by associates and other... well known members of the community What a wonderful sight to see the streets moving and people much like myself being taken care of. As he continues to pace towards his home he notices an newer fellow being beaten down by an old lady whom's purse he attempted to grab He laughs to himself and continues on to see a guy dealing drugs right in front of the police All humble beginnings and all can grow threw it and be better for it. What can we all say, when my feet first landed on these mysterious shores I had similar problems and Now look at me, I have the police on a regular pay schedule and dealers look for me to get what they need instead of my tireless searching for them. As for the time my family has been on these shores they have made a small name for it with its pros and cons. But unfortunately the family lines here are deep and are part of a group of their own which seems to be hopeless to become part of. I know people right now are ignoring my speech this moment because they don't recognize my face. I have all understanding for the reasons for these friendships and i am completely able to except that it maybe short comings in my family to find its way into this group. But could it be more then these inabilities in my family but the lack of desire of the elite group to accept newcomers as equals? Is it not the responsibility of the community to take in new members? Now I don't ask these things on behalf of myself, I have found my place I believe but I say it only to raise an issue which I believe important to our communities growth. |

You don't make perfectly clear what are your expectations. I'll try to point out a few things to you, which might help you understand the way things are. First of all, to put things in a proper perspective from the beginning, the word "community" isn't really a proper term to describe La Cosa Nostra. A "society" might be more proper. Community describes a group of people living together and working together with a utilitarian ethic. That is not what we are. We live in different cities, and work for different families, each (ideally) with their own characteristics and goals. Do not expect our society to function as a singular community. It never has and should never do such a thing. Diversity and competition are what motivate people to work. It is also unrealistic to expect acceptance into any particular circle of mobsters. You work with a group of other mobsters and grow close to those people. Perhaps your children play together. These relationships are built over time. It is not like a fraternity where you can hand out memberships. Building relationships with others must happen naturally over time. I don't know how you view the social dynamics in any particular family or city, but if my perception is correct, you believe that there is less than a handful of groups who maintain working relationships. This is not true. There are many circles, and many mobsters actually have connections to several social circles simultaneously. Again, this happens naturally over time, as a result of working together. Are you envious of certain mobsters who are close with each other, who you view as the "cool kids"? If that's how you view things, there isn't much you can do about it. I can only reassure you that at the end of the day, it isn't about how hip you are, but about what you are able to accomplish in your line of work and the amount of respect you can garner. You will develope relationships with those you work with, and those relationships will expand to include other mobsters, and grow tighter-knit as dependence and trust developes. Over time you will work with more and more mafiosi, and your social connections will expand providing you with both social capital and satisfying relationships. |
