I've been thinking about the effects that leaders have made on our game, and I wanted to throw it out to the community because I'm curious to hear what people have to say. Many leaders talk about wanting to make an impact- but who has actually succeeded in making this happen?

Please note here that I'm not asking about who everyone thinks are the best leaders. A leader can be excellent, but still entirely conventional.

Who are the leaders that changed our game/world? What were these changes? Did they start a new custom? A new policy? What revolutionary new things did they implement?

Very curious to hear the responses here.

(To further clarify, I'm not looking for who made the best the suggestions forum questions; instead, I'm asking about players who changed the game by playing it a particular way and/or implementing new ideas.)

I’ve been in this game a long time, been through several leaders and many of them are not memorable as they’ve come and gone. A few I had issues with because their methods for game play went against what I considered to be the code of the game but three leaders stick out sharply against the rest. Three excellent leaders for many reasons.

I’m talking communication, they talk and listen to their players, their rules are fair and firm and their discipline is swift but warranted. They have worked to bridge gaps and cities, often reaching out across cities to make strong bonds with other players as well as powerful allies. They value the player over the game every time, they are clear in their expectations, and two of them especially really focused on bringing the player into the game through role play. I’m talking made man ceremonies, attention to historical accuracy, and immersing their players in a world that felt real.

Another thing that happened was that their hands were also well versed in rules and expectations, were ALWAYS there as a side along, and even helped correct small problems before they became big problems. They valued hard work and were often there to send out notes in game or irc to see how their players were doing.

All three of these leaders have made me want to play, encouraged me to stop out of my comfort zone and do things I ALWAYS said I couldn’t or wouldn’t do. The three I’m talking about are Deimne/Brick Pollitt, Kate’s/Keats, and Ralph. Their help and influence and kindness has translated into something outside the game, a friendship that STILL checks in on me from time to time whether I’m playing or not. To me, that is the mark of a great leader.
