On the side of Los Angeles, Pasadena, there is a tavern-like building, but with full doors. Once opened, you enter a different dimension, one not seen anywhere else. You see closed tatami doors, however, it takes you a moment to notice the handle. You try to push, but it doesn’t budge. You try to pull, but it doesn’t budge. You stand there, thinking how to open the door, when it is slid open by a female in an exquisite oriental clothing (kimono), however, her features are American, not Asian. She slightly bows to you and gestures you to enter, without no sound coming from her lips. You look around the room revealed to you and it feels like you’ve been transported in some way from America to Japan. Tatami mat floor. Walls and doors look the same, only those with a keen eye can notice small parting in the wood with which’s help the door could be slid open. Three of the sides of the room had booths in which there were low tables and some pillows around them. By the fourth wall there was a sign of the Western world. A bar with three bartenders and seven high chairs by it. In the middle of the room was a small stage, around one squaremetre, covered in pillows. On those pillows sat a quite young Asian descent female with a strange musical instrument in her lap, which looked a bit like a guitar, but at the same time wasn’t (shamishen), while a lute was right next to her. In front of the stage were scattered many pillows around small round tables for guests to simply sit down and relax, and enjoy the uncommon sounds the Asian descent girl played. |
