The streets passed by with a blur as the car kicked over into high revs and paced at high speed through the streets of Philly. It let off only to take a corner, and then it was back on the throttle. She hummed along with a rambunctious note. The kind you found in the liveliest of dames. The ones you wouldn't think of taking home to your mother, or even your father.

The legs kept galloping. Turning. The white walls of the otherwise blackened Maybach rolled around like the innards of a vinyl. 78 RPMs. Fitting, as the car slowed to about that in miles as it took a long bend at slightly higher speed than allowed. The taxi had been done away with at the mouth of Race Street Pier. Where they were going, only similar tastes were received. It would be an interesting occasion. And one Adonis hoped @Itachi_Uchiha could handle.

Adonis slowed their approach to a roll. It started down the long alleyway with a drop in power, which sent the girl screaming a high pitch before Joe was able to bring her to a steady, but very slow roll. He flicked off the headlights as they continued down. What were once faces, turned into hazy silhouettes, a production line either side of the car. Some were smoking this or that, which gave their otherwise shadowy appearance a twilight glow.

After about a ten second procession, Adonis brought the car to a halt. He turned the key in the ignition as the Zeppelin drew silent. The alleyway was a place of seedy wonderment. A place only some ventured down if they had the balls, and the money. The balls, because of the women who made themselves a living off of the money the balls had to also be carrying.

Slowly, the car began to take on more and more energy, as the figures they passed on the way in began to circle it, like they were feeding off the life that was within it. Like they needed that fix, something other than their mundane vice ridden hellbent on fucking themselves up shot of turps they called staying afloat. Most that came down here were much like them. Most, warped souls adrift in the currents of Purgatory.

Adonis looked over at Itachi. He hadn't even told him his name yet. Just practically dragged him into the Yellow cab on account of some work that needed done. Work did need to be done. And he'd hopefully be the one to do it. The apprehensive hand on the gun he'd noticed as they met would come in handy. He took a good, hard look at the new face. He needed to. In this life, you had to know who you were dealing with. Who, you were fucking with. And as he got a sense of the guy's current emotional state, the back of a hand rapped on Adonis' window.

With a continuous effort, Joe brought the glass pane down fully. His own smoke was still lit, and wafted up and out through the opening. And as it did, another chain smoker leaned her head in.

"Got a light, sugar?"

Joe, darting his eyes back at Itachi, and as if on queue, flamed the end of the lucky strike snipe. He then turned his head ever so slightly to the side, speaking out the corner of his mouth in a response, saying the words she needed to hear.

"Got us a place in hell, doll?"

Her face showed a troubled soul. Her eyes, a deep crimson drop of 'show me a good time or get goin'. The kind of women you only met to entertain her lavish lifestyle of shallow palmed tips as she engrossed yours. She was one of the soldiers on the front line, in a sense. The ones working the streets, and this here alley.

"Oh you know I do. You always know I do." She said as she further leaned against the car, sighing passionately as she did. She was a women of the night. A worker for another, and that became obvious with what she said next.

"She's waitin' for ya, Joey. Best not keep her waitin'."

"She loves me early, or late, Bee."

The crowd that had gathered around the car seemed to disperse and just as Bee sauntered off to a more familiar spot, one she'd earned through pure blood, sweat and tears. If you didn't know any better, you'd take her for a bare knuckles fighter on account of how she held down her spot.

With room to move, Joe glanced over at Itachi. He didn't ask. He didn't tell. He simply expected the new face to follow. They were here. The job was at hand. What else was he going to do? Joe popped the handle and stepped out. He glanced around at the immediate environment. Those same shadowy figures were still about, albeit further away and conversing in small groups. Some huddled around fiery drums. All keeping company, their lowly spirits somewhat alight in this otherwise deadened zone.

Joe then looked up at the stars as he fixed at his attire. It was a full moon out. It always was when he came here. When he made sure to pack his lunchbox of a colt revolver and a Winchester pump action, the latter in the trunk of the midnight black car. He buttoned up his jacket and turned toward where there was a door.

The light broke through the crevices around the wooden entrance at the end of the alley, and in front of where the car was parked. They would be going in there next, but first, Joe awaited Itachi. He had a few things to say to him, yet waited till he got himself out of the car and up to speed with what was going on. He seemed a smart one, if you could pick it on first appearances. He'd hopefully already be aware the job wouldn't be like the shit he'd been fed through job boards. This, was to be a fateful night indeed.

Report Post Tip

Weird wouldn't even begin to describe how the night was going. When Itachi took to the streets to wander throughout the night, the last thing he expected he'd be doing was riding through the slums of Philadelphia. If you asked him he couldn't even remember really why he ended up in the state, but it sure wasn't to be here. Yet, here he was. With a man who's name he didn't even know.

Here in this slummy looking place Itachi couldn't quite describe the feeling he had when he looked at it. He felt at home and uncomfortable both at he same time. He was sure if he voiced that out loud it wouldn't make much sense, but given his circumstances and his background this is where he felt like he belonged. The bottom of the bottom, he wasn't much for luxury, but his parents did do the best for him. He was a pretty big deal back where he was from. A prodigy, a heir, he wasn't used to having to deal with slummy places like this. But he had seen much worse all the same.

Itachi shook off those dark thoughts as a woman had come to the window and was now talking to the man. He didn't fully understand the contents of the conversation they were having, but he understood they were talking cryptically and with enough familiarity that the two of them have some kind of relationship. Itachi briefly wondered if he just started randomly shouting at her one night and dragged her along for a ride down here too. With this guy next to him, and his seeming impulsiveness, he wouldn't be surprised if such was the case. One look at the woman and her state of dress told Itachi that she was a woman of the night. In his village they had the same thing in the red light district. The woman there took better care of themselves but that kind of stuff didn't really interest him. He only made trips to the red light district when on a mission or running a favor for someone.

Itachi was snapped out of these thoughts when the man who had dragged him here was now moving to get out of the car. It would seem he was being led around again. Itachi was wondering if he shouldn't have ignored that urge to continue walking when this man started shouting him down, but he couldn't ignore the feeling that something big would come out of this interaction with this man. Something life changing. Itachi didn't much believe in faith or destiny, he'd seen and done too many things to believe that he was meant to follow some script, but it felt like the world was directing him to deal with this man.

Itachi also stepped out the car. He looked up at the sky and noticed the moon was full. It was full, the same as it was the night his life took a turn for the worse. The night that EVERYTHING had changed. Again shaking off dark thoughts Itachi followed after the man, if nothing else he had shown him a new place Itachi felt he should come to hang out at. It seemed like the streets version of hell, a place where someone like him belonged. Ohhh well, he figured he'd better find out what exactly it was this man wanted.

Itachi followed the man to a door where it looked like the strange man was waiting for him. He gave the man a blank but serious stare to see if he could find any indicators of what this man was thinking by reading his facial features. He didn't come up with much so he settled for waiting there for the man to just outright say something to him next.

"They call me Joe Adonis." The nearly done cigarette wobbled around between his lips as he spoke.

"Among other things."

His smirk raised the shortened snipe in the air a little, as his chin also lifted slightly. He was a proud man, sometimes maybe a little too proud. Vanity flowed through his veins like the Delaware, and aggressive to a fault line that ran under it. But he got shit done and he needed people that could do the same.

"This is where it all begins, pal."

Cryptic, maybe. Was he talking about the simple job he'd dragged this poor soul off the streets to possibly not come away the same from? Or something more? Joe was always looking towards the future, and beyond. Off the Race Street Pier, over the horizon, into territories he believed only the God's dared to tread.

But more likely, their devilish counterparts. As all needed an adversary. All needed an opposite. And he was hoping the one before him could do what others had failed to do, to meet their shadow self within these walls and come back to the light of the outer doorway. To bridge that gap, and to hand him what they'd also come for.

"In there is a package." Joe's eyes had a fiery blue glaze, like it was reflecting the likeness of what may be found shortly.

The Purgatory overseer positioned himself in front of the entry. The shine bursting out of the cracks behind him told of a storied opening, one that had the door itself off its hinges on more than a few occasions, and the newest slab of oak not properly fitting its mold.

"I need you to bring it to me." Joe sucked in the very last the cigarette would offer. The amber end was out before he gripped it between his sometimes imperious fingers and flicked it away.

"Simple, no?" He said as he stepped to the side of the entrance where the hinges were struggling to do its single solitary job. He hoped Itachi would be different. Able to do what was required and meet his request.

But it wasn't at all simple. As Joe opened and held the rickety door from closing, a downstairs lobby was revealed. It was the starting point of a two story bordello. In the furthest room on the second floor is where Itachi would find what Joe's last associate was unable to. A payoff to Purgatory in the form of protection money, and the means to a life with the ever thriving locale in Philadelphia thereafter.

As you went through, it got darker and darker. More and more sinful. The sights and sounds resembling those of the deepest darkest desires come to life in the physical. One could lose themselves in there, possibly forever. If not their physicality, at least their sense of what was right and wrong, siphoned to the underworld of vice and illicit happenings. If, you weren't ready.

As the new face approached the entrance, Joe shot out a piece of advice between his well-accustomed nefarious lips.

"Don't let it consume you, what you see in there. It's just a part of this other world we live and work in. If you can handle meeting this hellish mirror and return with your wits about ya, the rest of what we do is a cake walk. Accept it. Become it. But don't get completely lost to it. You need to come back, yet. And with that package. Then maybe there's more a pal could offer ya."

Adonis was being leading, again. But if the guy could pull it off, he'd be looking at more than just a hefty paycheck. Race Street needed people the likes doing the dirty work wasn't a problem. They just had to keep their center, their sense of self as they went about it. And that wasn't always the easiest thing to do. And sometimes being tossed right into the fire at the start was the best avenue, to see if they had the strength of character remain as the rest of their bullshit went up in hell-fire; to step into the ring like the others before and after them and become another legend in the making.

Report Post Tip

Itachi tried his best to understand what it was that he was seeing before him. A place that apparently took the souls of men who entered and caused them to lose themselves. The Red Light District back in his village wasn't this intense, but he grew up in darkness, he was surrounded by despair and darkness since he was four years old. The way the man who had introduced himself as Joe Adonis was talking, this was some kinda test to see if he could keep his head, while getting the job done. Itachi wasn't new to being given tests of character or mental fortitude. If he was the arrogant type he'd be laughing in this man's face, if he was the emotional type he'd be the angry type. Luckily Itachi was neither so he kept his face impassive as he took in the sights before him.

His task was to go collect a package from somewhere inside this place. He was missing the exact details from his minor debriefing of where exactly it was and who was supposed to give it to him. This irritated Itachi but he had undertaken missions with less information before as well. Itachi guessed that this could be part of the test as well.

The man Adonis, also gave him advice to not lose himself or allow what was going on inside to consume him. He took the advice and warning serious as all information was to be taken seriously. He continued to look forward as he addressed the man.

"Very well, Adonis-san. Wait here, I shall go retrieve your package." Itachi declared as he disappeared inside.

The first thing he needed to do was head down to the lounge to gather information. He could've asked the man Adonis for more information, but to be honest the man had a way of talking in enough circles to even make Itachi confused and slightly irritated. He decided his quickest course of action would be to go and reclaim this package on his own power. He'd be slightly at a disadvantage but he was sure he'd be able to make due as long as he kept his mind focused on the mission.

He entered the place feeling more of that conflicted feeling. There was drinking, smoking, drug use, fornication and other things going on down here right in the open, and others were either paying it no mind or acting like it was the most normal thing going on. This place definitely was different from where he was raised. He blocked it out though and focused on finding someone who could supply him with the information he was looking for. He had two options, there were more working girls down here or there was the bartender. Prostitutes were a good form of information, he learned that from back in his time seeing people of his kind work over the geishas back home.

He decided to go the bartender route. Bartenders were one of the most useful with trading information with. It had been a bit but he'd have to work this man over. He was a rugged man with a beard, not one of those overly talkative bartenders but more of the ones who'd serve you your drink and move on like that had better things to do. The man looked over Itachi as he approached the bar and Itachi maintained eye contact. Good, that would make all this much easier. He'd give the man a chance first though.

"What are ya havin'?" The man gruffly asked Itachi.

"Nothing to drink, but I would be willing to pay for many of them if you could supply me with information." Itachi replied.

The man looked back to Itachi like he was considering it and weighing his options, if this deal was acceptable or not. He gave Itachi a hard stare while he thought about it, like he was trying to see if he could break him or sway his mind to back off and just pay for drinks instead. Itachi just stared back unflinchingly, almost like he was bored with the man's attempt.

"What kinda information are ya lookin' for?" The man asked.

"Simple information really. Who runs this place, what is it really about? Also I was sent here to retrieve a package from a man named Adonis, who do I go and speak to about that?" Itachi asked.

The bartenders face seemed to show a range of different emotions at the mention of the name Adonis. Intrigue, fear, respect, and anger. Itachi couldn't blame the man, as he himself had felt most of those emotions upon meeting the man himself. It would seem he just had that affect on people. Getting back to the bartender it would seem that he decided to let anger win out. He formed a scowl on his face.

"I don't know what the fuck yer talkin' about. I suggest you get the fuck outta here." The man replied.

"I can't do that bartender-san. I sugget YOU give me the information I seek before something unfortunate happens to you." Itachi replied, not missing a beat.

That seemed to get the man's full attention as it only further fueled his anger.

"The fuck did you just say to me?" He asked angrily and took a few steps toward Itachi.

Itachi had to act fast and discreetly. The bartender's rising voice was drawing attention and eyes to him. That's not something that was ever good in Itachi experience. Itachi stared the bartender directly in the eyes, making sure most people were watching the man's movements and not Itachi. Itachi's eyes flashed red very briefly, if you blinked you would've missed it. In that brief second it took for that to happen, the man halted completely. His face was frozen in fear and his body was stuck only slightly trembling. Itachi continued to look impassive and all the eyes who were watching these two men seemed to flicker back and forth between the two of them, trying to understand what had just happened.

"Now, tell me, who do I go see about that package for Adonis-san?" Itachi asked in a bit more forceful voice.

The bartender shook slightly again, before he was able to point to some stairs that were hidden over to the side of the lounge leading up to some hidden area. Itachi glanced back to the bartender before he bowed his head slightly.

"Thank you." he said as he quickly stuck two fingers up out of sight and finished his bow.  He then turned to the stairs that the man pointed to and headed towards them. He heard the bartender ask around in confusion about what was happening and why everyone was staring at him but he didn't pay it too much mind. He also didn't pay a lot of mind to the eyes who were now paying him some mind. One of the women were brave enough to approach him and ask him if he wanted to have a good time, Itachi paid her no mind either, until she grabbed on his arm.

Itachi narrowed his eyes before he turned to face her, his hand sneaking back to the pouch on his back hip where his knives were contained. He gave the woman a glare and reigned his automatic reflex to defend himself.

"Relax sugar. I think I can take you to the person you seem to be looking for." The woman said.

Itachi continued to glare at this woman and read her facial features looking for any hint or sign that this woman was lying or a trap for him. She only showed amusement on her face like she knew exactly what he was trying to do and like she wouldn't give him anything. This irritated Itachi, it would seem many people were taking him for rides that he didn't control on this night. Figuring resistance would only delay this night more, Itachi relaxed himself a bit.

"Good, about time you stop tensing. We'd never get anywhere with you being too tight. That's my job." The woman said jokingly with a wink.

Itachi just continued to stare at her showing her that he wasn't interested in joking back and forth with her. She was the self amusement type though and as long as she found the stuff funny she was pleased. She then began to pull him toward the stairs leading up to the hidden area, the bartender had pointed out.

She led him to a hallway where more fornicating could be heard. This made him feel slightly uncomfortable and like he had taken the wrong course here. He guessed he must've tensed a bit in the woman's hold as she turned back to him with a smile on her face.

"Don't worry sugar, as much as I'd like to, that's not what I'm guiding you toward tonight. Maybe next time." She added with another wink.

Itachi gave her a look and then quickly looked away, which was the only sign of his embarrassment. He was used to being flirted with but not in positions where he couldn't escape. The woman who was pulling him just giggled in response, it seemed his shift in mood didn't escape her notice either. She was quite the perceptive woman.

"We're here." She suddenly said as the stopped in front of a door that had no noise coming out from it.

The woman knocked two times before she opened the door. She walked in like she was quite comfortable in the room. It was a small little office setting with a lavish set up. The woman pulled Itachi up to the desk before she walked around to the side and spoke to the woman seated in the chair behind it.

"Joey sent us some more fresh meat for the pickup this time. Must be testing this one too. Think he hit on a different gem this time, this one seems to be more interested in fighting and conflict than he does with the other kinda physicality." The woman who brought him here informed.

"I can see that." the woman in the chair replied. "If you don't mind next time lay off the bar man downstairs would you dear? He's a bit gruff sometimes but he's not entirely unreasonable." She said to Itachi as she reached into one of the drawers in her desk and pulled out an envelope.

"I believe this is what you're here for isn't it?" The woman sitting at the desk said.

She then gave a nod to the other woman in the room who picked up the envelope and brought it over to Itachi. Itachi looked at it suspiciously before taking it and looking at both the woman who brought it to him and then the woman who was seated at the desk.

"Tell Joey, next time, don't be a stranger. And if he's gonna continue this little routine of sending his hopeful recruits in here he's gonna be cleaning up the messes they make if he doesn't fully get them ready before sending them in here. I got a feeling this won't be the last time we meet. I'm sure my number one girl wishes that to be true as well don't ya?" The woman asked to her employee.

"Damn right. Hopefully Joey makes him a regular when it comes to collections." The other woman added.

Itachi begun to wonder if this came to past, how much trouble he would be in for plotting Adonis' murder if he continually sent him to this place. He snapped back to the mission, and gave a full bow to the women in the room for both cooperating and for helping him. He couldn't deny the fact that he was grateful that he didn't have to get violent here as that was the biggest thing he was worried about.

"Thank you for your cooperation. I greatly appreciate it. I shall take my leave now." Itachi said and turned to leave.

"Ooh, a respectful one too. That's new. Don't be a stranger." The lady in the chair yelled after him.

Itachi closed the door behind him as he left the office and let out a very loud sigh. The sounds and smell of sex prevented him from fully escaping the scene and feeling truly relieved. He quickly made his way back down the stairs and to the entrance of the bordello, doing his best to fully avoid the bartender completely. He was sure what he had done to the man's mind would cause him to forget about him but he wasn't ready to fully gamble on that.

As he arrived back at the entrance he seen Adonis with a new cigarette in his mouth. He gave the man a flat stare as he handed him the envelope, it was the best he could do to hold back the glare he wanted to shoot at the man.

"I assume this was the package you wanted me to retrieve? There was no problems in my quest to go about reclaiming it. Well none worth mentioning anyway. Does this suffice to pass your little test, Adonis-san?" Itachi asked, carefully watching the man for a reply.

"Well, well, well." Joe said as he placed the snipe in his mouth and clapped his hands together a handful of times. He took a long drag before taking it away from his lips again and keeping it between his fingers as his arm dangled at his side. The ash naturally fell off from the end and onto the ground.

Adonis received the much anticipated package, nodding a few times as he slid it out of sight, inside his overcoat.

"Pass. Fail. It doesn't matter. What matters is who you are, and what you want from this life."

With a pat on the shoulder, Joe left his hand there and moved them both back towards the car, speaking as they stepped along.

"I wouldn't usually do that to a stranger. But I was desperate. And you were, well, the first face I saw that I thought could handle it. Not everyone comes back from in there, you see?"

Joe stopped them after they'd trekked a short distance. Arriving back at the Maybach, he let his gentle but secure grip go from Itachi's shoulder.

"Not everyone can handle themselves like you just did. And having shown that, I owe you one."

His demeanor had changed. No longer so forceful, so adamant on getting the job done. His eyes, those fiery blues, were a soft hue. Even the alleyway they were down seemed to have a different feel to it, like the bodies there weren't as haunted. Weren't as lost, as troubled. Like as if through an experience of deep inner work, it made the shadows seem not so, shadowy. Like the silhouettes had more life to them. Because they really did. You just had to become them for a time, step into their shoes, to truly see their worth.

"So, let me do something for ya." Joe said with a wide, warm smile.

"Let me help you get some proper work around here. No more of this shit. Who the fuck wants to go in there?" He let out a chuckle.

"You think I only send guys in there to test them? It's a fuckin' shit hole. But, they need our protection too. Everyone in this world needs everyone else. Even the ones who decide to live lives that we may not agree with. We're all from the same spark. Same God's above. Same us below. Everyone has a place, we just tend to sit higher up in the food chain. Which means we are responsible for their well being, as well as our own."

The car door was popped open by Joe. He nodded a few more times as he let his soft gaze rest on Itachi.

"Maybe I can learn a lot from someone like you. Maybe, you can learn a thing or two from me too. How bout it, pal? How's bout we get down to Race Street and introduce ya to the crew. We could do with a guy like you. And maybe, your legend could do with the likes of us. Cause what's life without someone having ya back? Let me show you what we're about. I'm sure you'll fit right in."

Itachi's eye twitched as the man talked about the place not always being the testing ground but it just being him that was specially selected. Itachi never wanted to be less special than he did right now. He could also understand what the man was saying. It was just funny to hear him waxing on philosophically. He didn't seem the type, but maybe he was judging this man on preconceptions. The one thing that Itachi could say was that the man was interesting. He couldn't help but want to follow him and see what he was about.

Itachi was guided back to the car that they took here and was offered to be brought to some place called race street. The name sounded interesting enough and it grabbed his attention. He couldn't help but be curious about it. He got back in the car and looked to the man who brought him on this journey in the first place.

"Sure, take me to this Race Street place. It's about time I found someplace to settle in and work together with." Itachi replied.
