I lean against the wall and place a cigarette between my lips. If anything, smoking helped my thoughts flow. Apart from it? I really hate smoking, I don't know why the fuck I keep buying these things.
It's funny how your world is put upside down when you less expect it to happen. Four days ago I was just another small-time thief operating out of the Queens, robbing all I could to make just enough money, so I could afford to pay another night in a cheap dirty motel and two meals a day.
But then I randomly stumbled into a guy who was going to change it all.
I needed to cool my heat down cos the cops were all over me in back in NY. You only know you fuck up after you make a mistake right? How else you gonna know? This time apparently I fucked up big time by robbing the wife of a big shot in the bureau.
So I bought a ticket to Philly and here I was. A brand-new life for a few days. Except, and I didn't know that at the time, I'd end up spending more than a decade in these streets.
The days went by and the nights were no different. I spent them on a known local speakeasy, mostly by myself. That was just until a guy sat next to me and told me that people were watching me and that they knew what I was doing. When I said so what, he said to me I had two ways out — either I paid my taxes to local bosses, or I had to leave town.
Once again.
Looking back I am glad I made the right choice because weeks later I realized the second option would imply leaving town in a body bag. Swimming with da fishes.
But hey, I don't know what I really said to him, but it must have been good cos the next day I was driving this very same guy around town.
The guy´s name was Eddie Stobart.
Life´s funny at time, isn't?
So here I was, still leaning against the wall and still smoking my cigarette. A few steps further there were three made guys I didn't really know discussing about a shipment they were supposed to collect later tonight.
Inside the building all the big guys were discussing business. My orders were simple — being around in three hours to collect Mr. Stobart.
I robbed entire houses in less than that, I thought to myself. I guess I could grab the car and leave the place for a while. You never know when you're gonna find the opportunity to make money or cross someone worthy of calling a contact.
Unless you look for it. Better than staying here looking at these guys anyway. I started the engine and hit the gas.
