I ran fast. Little legs on an almost childlike frame as I dashed through alley ways trying to avoid getting rumbled. I had only arrived in New York City late last night after a tip off from an old associate Vincent-Alo about the endless possibilities of making money, making fame and making his bones. I was young, though not as young as I looked. I had a habit of making myself younger than I needed to be to elicit certain sympathies. And I often needed it Getting pinched as an adult? That would equal hard time, but as a kid? Get the fuck outta here. Go bother someone else. And I often did. Soon I had a reputation in some circles in the mid-west, which meant the phone call from Vincent was serendipity in its most delightful form. Get out of dodge and move out here to the city that never sleeps. Before finding work through the official channels I decided to do a bit of scoping out of my own. Get a real feel for the place at street level. Unfortunately the flight had taken it out of me. It was early morning and I hadn’t slept yet. A sluggish grab of a purse slipped into a firm grab of a pert behind. A pert behind belonging to a 6 foot tall 300lbs man who looked like he belonged in a wrestling ring rather than a market place. He was quick too for a man of his size. Him and his goons had me panting and out of breath he ran into a dead end. I laughed in the face of danger and had a sudden vision in my head of a Lion cub roaring defiantly at a hungry pack of hyenas. Shaking my head to clear the image I turned and faced. In a Pinch you had two options. Shoot everyone twice or you talk fas and try evade the heat. I had been here 12 hours and didn't even have a gun. Besides I was never a violent man. I turned on the charm. “I wasn’t trying to rob ya, sir” I said making my voice smaller and shrinking into myself. “That was me paying you a compliment! Do you work out? You must do look at you. You must spend all day at the docks loading and unloading…” my talking was getting me nowhere. I was on the verge of getting fucked up and wished I had a guardian cloud Lion watching me ready to step in. I flashed a smile and waited for the beating that would surely come. |

“Alright, alright, for fuck sake stop breaking my balls will ya” It didn´t even have business running for longer than 24 hours and she was already asking for a raise. That she did more than most, better than most and what others denied. I couldn´t fight that argument. She was the best horse in my stable, and now she was threatening to leave me unless I added a zero on her pay. “Johnny, fucking deal with her. I can´t bear this any longer” “But, but...” “Don´t fucking but me Johnny, I thought I had hired a manager to manage this shit, so do your job and free me of the headaches, alright?” “Just give her what she wants and make sure she shuts up and goes back to work, there´s three guys downstairs waiting for her” Patience was not a virtue of mine. I was the kind of guy to win an argument with a gun pointed to someone´s head. All my life it´s been like that. Through experience I figured it saved a lot of my time. That was gonna probably be the outcome if I came back tomorrow with the same stone on my shoe. Behind the counter I kept the shift´s money on a small box. I looked at it, and despite I was not as surprised as I thought I would be, I couldn´t say either I was disappointed with the revenue. I arranged the money in small rolls of it and placed them on my pocket, and then I left through the back doors. Before I could even sort my smoke, I started hearing screams coming from the alley. There was no light over there but I could say by the shapes Ray was one of the four men over there. “Hey, hey, HEY, I don´t want this kinda shit around here Ray, didn´t we agree on this? You wanna do this you take em to a river, or into the woods, or you want the cops to fucking close the operation Ray?!” As I come closer I realized the guy getting beated up on the floor as a known face of mine. “Wait, stop fucking beating that guy. I know him! Stop, stop” “Locke? What da fuck? We just spoke on the phone and next thing I know you got yourself in trouble?” “Fucking shit. Ray, help the guy pick himself up. Compose yourself for fuck sake, look at you” |

"Brutal, my friend. Absolutely brutal." I was talking to an old associate of mine who had helped bring me over here. "Did you see what happened? Guy was a rookie - never pick on the guy twice your size and three times your weight. I bet he thought he would get away with it. Smile and a wave like he's some Madagascan penguin." I chuckled and idly threw away the apple core that I had been munching on. A dishevelled and clearly frustrated gentleman returned. A man I knew as Vincent-Alo. "Too late then?" I asked raising an eyebrow. I could see the anger and tension steaming off him and I thought maybe I'd overstepped my mark. I hastily took a step back "Not your fault. I saw the whole thing - grabbed the guys ass right out of no where. Was only ever going to end one way in this line of work..." I ran my hand threw my hair before wiping the grease onto my faded white shirt. "Name's Teddy. Teddy Rollins. Perhaps we could talk?" |

A guy talking to me just three steps away while I ignored him. I was impavid. The worst was not the fact Ray had splattered the guy's blood all over the alley, no. The worst was me thinking the coke Locke was meant to bring me would buy me a ticket to get my button, and now I was back to square one. What the fuck I was gonna tell Joe now? What about Jack? Guy would just get me whacked for losing his product. Three minutes ago I was making money out of a whore house and now all of a sudden I was either facing a pop in the head or some time in the can. Take your pick. Ray was shrugging like a puppy as if he had no ideia about the effect of a brass knuckle and his massive hand hitting a breadstick of a man's forehead about a dozen times. I am getting paranoid or those are sirens coming from the distance? How the fuck they know anyway? Shit. Mother fucker. Cocksucker. Cunt. I'll deal with Joe later, now I need to avoid going to jail. The funny guy was still talking as if that was all entertaining to him. "You" I said turning to him "Stop talking and grab his feet, RAY? Open the trunk" |
