Five to One, Baby. Started by: Kurtz on Oct 03, '18 18:00

... One in Five.  No-one here gets out alive.

No-one here gets out alive...  That's true enough.  But this speech isn't about mortality; it's about what happens with the life that each of us is gifted from the Gods.

I just drove the Streets and counted how many members of this thing of our were hanging about; 63.  Not bad.  So, quite a lot of guys.  And then, I consulted some of my contacts to work out how many of them were alleged "Crew Leaders" (CLs).

14 CLs out of 63 members of this thing.  22% of the population, as present as the time of counting.

22% - close to Five to One.

And then, of course, there's the Hands.  I counted 9.

So, what I'd like to talk about is this:

Are there too many chiefs?  Can any CL really be supported by a Hand and an average of 5 guys?

Tops brings his preferred book on statistics with him, the book in which he always tries to find orders.. Orders on randomness.. As he walked, thinking about how random random actually was, he heard Kurtz talking numbers.. Tops stood and listened for a while, then opened his book on page 7 and stepped forward.

Sorry, Kurtz..

Tops pointed at the first definition on the first page with content of his statistics book

Population size = n

As he let Kurtz read, he said

I am confident that you should increase your n, would you want to have a representative sample. Tops made some quotation marks in the air with his free hand, as he said 'n', and continued

Also, I don't see any problems with the leaders being amongst the most active people around. I would even say that is a positive thing.. Don't you agree?

Is that what you deduced from my study?

Your focus on leadership is interesting, Kurtz. You appear to be in many places at once, all discussing some aspect of our current leadership. I don't know if I should be concerned or flattered. You've obviously spend some time considering these issues, if not to at least bring them up. What is your opinion on this topic? Is it a problem to have a large amount of active leaders? Is it only a problem when their underlings are less active? I feel like this ties into my point on your other discussion:

"Surely it is not an issue of people being denied, but rather an issue of people getting involved!"

I can't tell if you are putting the emphasis on leaders or the people being led. Either way, I'd like to know your opinion on this subject.

Having passed through the streets, he heard the voice of Kurtz, a wiseguy from the family of Midnight Society. Tyki had been running some errands and heard Tops shouting something about statistics, oh how he loved his numbers.

"Hang on a minute. Kurtz, weren't you the guy I saw down the street shouting about people not talking enough?"

He pauses from a moment, almost in deep thought, trying to recall exactly what he remembered hearing.

And now...  Tumbleweed.  Where are the Speakers?  The legends?  Those that realise how powerful a strong voice is?

Why have the Streets declined so harshly?

"It appears to me Kurtz that Tops just indulged your point raised regarding this 'issue', taking his time to give you a well addressed reply. Your response however, seems to be quite lacking. Was it not you yourself who questioned the decline of the Streets?"

"I had originally planned on answering you myself, however I believe I missed the 4 hour window you seem to have allowed before moving down the streets for your second discussion."

"Are you seeking an actual discussion? Or is this a clever ploy of yours to try and seek attention?"

Noticing Tops hovering over to the Casino, almost as if some unseen force was dragging him, he pulled him back. "Stick to the numbers I gave you to work on please Tops, we can visit the Casino a bit later."

Your findings were for people were "hanging around" at that time, why didnt you check the total population? Just curious.

ArturoStrigliori - my focus here was, rather obviously, that too many leaders could well be a problem.  I mean, it might not be, but that's what these Streets are for, no?

My thoughts are that There are too many leaders, that crews should be bigger, possibly even that cities should not have districts (but of course that would be City Hall).  And, whilst we are at it, I've also long thought that leaders should be able to control airports.

Tyki_Mikk -  "It appears to me Kurtz that Tops just indulged your point raised regarding this 'issue', taking his time to give you a well addressed reply. Your response however, seems to be quite lacking. Was it not you yourself who questioned the decline of the Streets?"

What was it lacking?

"I had originally planned on answering you myself, however I believe I missed the 4 hour window you seem to have allowed before moving down the streets for your second discussion."

There was no four hour window.  You know there wasn't a four hour window.  Why would you lie so egregiously in so public a manner?  What is wrong with you?

"Are you seeking an actual discussion? Or is this a clever ploy of yours to try and seek attention?"

Why do you think I'm not seeking an actual discussion?  Was asking me this a rather silly ploy to start an argument?

Cable - "Your findings were for people were "hanging around" at that time, why didnt you check the total population? Just curious."

Because that's what I wanted to write about.  Because I saw something and it made me feel inspired.  So I took action.

Do you have an issue with this?
