It was funny how a solid blow to the face had a way of clearing your thoughts in a way nothing else quite could. For Edgler, it had been just another day. Money goes in, money goes out. Deals are made. Protection is paid. Bribes are handed out. It was almost like the tide, regular and reassuring. Like the sound of the tides, it had a tendency to lull you to sleep.

That’s when you get sloppy. That’s when things go bad.

Edgler staggered back, trying to wipe away the stream of blood that was flowing free from his nose. There were three of them. He didn’t recognize them, so he figured they weren’t with any of the families. That meant they probably weren’t there to kill him, just rob him. Edgler didn’t think for a moment that they wouldn’t kill him, just that they weren’t a hit team. That meant no guns. Edgler did have a firearm, but he didn’t have a license. Besides, the last thing he needed was to start shooting a gun less than a block from a police station.

The leader swung again, but he was no fighter. He telegraphed his punches and Edgler cut him off with a jab to the jaw. Edgler was no boxer, but he’d lost his fear of getting punched a long time ago and this guy sucked. No defense at all.

He was rewarded with a blow to the ribs from the thug to his right. Edgler knew he was being worn down. If he let this thing continue, he’d wind up on the floor. He needed to end this and get out of here before the advantage of numbers did him in.

His hand strayed to the small, single edged blade he wore scout style at the small of his back. With a quick, fluid movement, he drew the blade and sunk into a defensive position.

“You said he wasn’t armed!” the thug on the left complained to the leader.

Edgler forced a cold smile that he hoped was intimidating. The three backed up slightly. Cobb glanced over the shoulder of the lead thug. His ice cream truck lay just across the street. If he could get to it, he could get out of there. Then he could find out how they knew his schedule. He could find out who’d sold him out. Then, he could kill them.

Good plan. He just had to get past three large thugs. The thugs had gotten over their surprise at the appearance of the blade. The leader took a small step forward.

Edgler yelled and threw himself at the leader, flipping the blade over in his hand. He impacted with the larger man, leading with his left shoulder. Despite the size difference, the impact made him stumble a bit. That provided all the opening he needed to drive the blade into his belly and pull it up savagely. Releasing his grip on the knife, he let it fall along with the thug. He felt a hard blow to his left shoulder and something grabbed his right arm. He shed the jacket of his ice cream man uniform and sprinted toward the mouth of the alley. The thugs were larger and stronger, but Edgler was faster. Besides, he doubted they’d attack him in broad daylight on the side of a main street. No, they’d know just where to hit him. They’d had inside information.

Edgler crossed the street in a few long strides. Relieved, he collapsed against the side of his truck and looked back toward the alley. Just as he’d suspected, the thugs weren’t pursuing.

Taking a few deep breaths, he slicked his hair back from his eyes. Slowly, relief gave way to anger. Only a few people knew his routine. It wouldn’t take long to find the leak. Edgler climbed into the driver’s seat and started the truck. He turned on the radio and let it play for a moment before he reached to put the truck into gear. That’s when he heard it. It was the sound of someone eating ice cream from just behind him. Suddenly alert, he started to turn and saw a dark figure looming behind him. Before he could face the intruder, a sharp pain stabbed him behind the right ear.

Darkness quickly claimed him.

When consciousness returned to Edgler, it brought a splitting headache along with it. Still groggy, Edgler found himself in a cold, metal chair. Trying to sit up, he realized his hands were tied behind his back with rope. He sat bound in a simple metal chair in the middle of a darkened room. The only light was a crudely wired overhead lamp. Somewhere nearby, he could hear the faint sounds of a radio.

Slowly, the memory of what had happened returned to him and the fear of uncertainty was replaced with cold anger. He’d been sold out. While he had lost his blade in the fight in the alley, he still had his wristwatch. Running his finger along the inside of the wide watch band, he found the razor blade he kept taped there intact. Grasping the blade between the index and middle fingers in his right hand, he began to saw slowly at the rope.

Suddenly, the door flung open and a large, muscular man with an impressive mustache walked into the door. He carried a crowbar

“Look who’s awake. Now you can answer a few questions,”

“If the question is ‘Would you like something to drink?’, the answer is yes. I’m parched,”

The only answer he got came from the crowbar

“When I ask a question, you answer. Otherwise, keep your damn mouth shut,”

Edgler said nothing and bowed his head.

“You’re a quick learner. That’s good. Maybe you’ll get to walk out of here alive,”

Too bad I can’t say the same for you, Edgler thought, reveling in what he was about to do

“Now, you’re going to tell me who you work for. Then, you’re going to tell me all about your little operation. I want names. Spill it!,”

Edgler mumbled something incoherent

The giant leaned in, tauntingly.

“What’s that, asshole? I can’t…”

Edgler quickly tore free from the mostly cut ropes. His left hand grabbed the bigger man’s right wrist and and turned the man’s hand palm up. As he did, he made a pair of deep incisions along his wrist and forearm, severing the tendons into his hand. The crowbar fell from his grasp as the strength fled from his fingers. Before the larger man could respond, Edgler drove his knee as hard as he could into the man’s groin. With a whimper of pain, the man blacked out.

He was awoken by a hard slap to the face. To his surprise, he was tied to the very chair Edgler had previously escaped

“See? That’s how you tie someone up. Hands tied separately and feet secured. Much better. Not to mention the fact that I did a much more thorough job of searching you for weapons,”

“Listen to me, you twisty little fr…”

The crowbar flashed into motion, impacting into the thug’s left kneecap with a sickening crunch. He cried out in pain. There goes his ballet career, Edgler thought

“When I ask a question, you answer. Otherwise, keep your damn mouth shut”

“Motherfu…” the man began only to be cut off by his right knee cap being destroyed as well.

“A slow learner. Yeah, you’re probably gonna die,”

“Listen to me, dumbass. I work for some very scary people. People that you don’t want to….”

“You work for a Sicilian wiseguy name Massimo Torrini who just came in on the boat. He’s trying to set up operations in Philly and decided the best way to do that is by striking at the existing gangs and framing other gangs for the attacks. Yeah, I know the guy’s name, where he lives, and I know who it was that sold you the information you used to ambush me and how much you paid him,”

“What… How the fuck do you know all that?!” the thug asked, dumbfounded.

“While you were lying in your own urine, strapped to that chair, I was getting answers from the guy in the next room. I cut off a couple of his fingers and told him that I’d let him live if he told me everything,”

“That fucker Eddie! I’m going to kill him!”

“No. You aren’t,” Edgler said calmly.

“Nobody screws with Torrini. Even if you kill me here, he’s still a dead man,”

“Yeah. He’s a dead man. Because I killed him. I said I told him that I’d spare him. Forgot to mention that I lied. Then, I stabbed him in the guts with that bowie knife you had on you. Nice blade, by the way. I think I’ll keep it. In remembrance of our time together,”

“You’re going to fucking kill me too…” the man said numbly.

“Yeah. Obviously,”

With that, Edgler opened up the man’s belly with his new favorite knife and watched impassively as he bled out. The large man tried in vain to work free from the ropes, but Edgler tied a much better know than the dead man had. Soon, he joined his partner.

Whistling a jaunty tune, Edgler looked around the house where he’d been kept. It was a smallish, single story home. Apparently, nobody lived there and most of the furnishings were absent. The only thing that was there was a stove and icebox in the kitchen. To Edgler’s delight, the stove was gas. Another quick search of the house found a few things that the men has with them. Most of it was junk, but Edgler took a book of matches and a can of gasoline.

Leaving the gas to the stove on, he left a trail of gas from the kitchen all the way to the foyer. As he walked out of the house, he lit a single match and let it drop. He’d just reached the car parked in front of the house when the fire reached the kitchen. It made a lovely explosion that brought the neighbors to gawk. Using keys he’d been kindly gifted by Eddie, he started the car and headed out.

Edgler hadn’t lied when he said he was parched. Hungry too. Fortunately, he knew a really good deli and, as fate would have it, he had business with the owner.

He’d let that old fool go before, but his time he was going to lose more than a hand
