The need to speak Started by: Fisk_Capizzi on Jan 24, '08 17:51
"There is a very thin line between what you can and cannot say these days"

Fisk sighs and stretches, the haul over from LA to Philly taking it's toll now. He watches the sky turn a deep blue as the sun sets and ponders ducking into a local tavern, before turning back to finish his speach

"Obviously you cannot speak ill of your family, nor disclose their business, but when it comes to public speaking, what is acceptable?

"I know it depends on the head of your respective families opinion, but it also depends what other bosses think.

"Is it right to start blathering on in the streets as a simple gangster about current state of affairs? Or should that be left to those who are probably more respected or higher up in the food chain? What is acceptable? Am I allowed to start some random talk about how our 6 cities have finally come together under individual rule? Will it be listened to? Will it be accepted?

"Should I be speaking now? Am I divuldging too much of my own character by making public apperances, when I could be silent, subtle and discreet?

"More to the point, should we care what people think?"

Mate, look at the streets at midnight, and I hope you and many else, will use the opportunity given, to speak about that, which you mention.

I won't explain more, so just look at the streets from midnight and on.

I don't in real life and I don't in this game. You can rant about me in good or bad ways, I will not care. But when I know something is true and somebody thinks it in another way, I will dispute it.

That is all I have to say about that.

Anyone else?

As people will know by now I dont speak that often, If i have something on my mind or a particular speech gets my attention then i will come along and give my opinions.

Personally my thoughts on speaking is it should always be encouraged, a lot of people nowadays think you cannot disagree with a respected persons opinion. I believe if the respected person is talking rubbish or being disrespectful then you have every right to disagree with them.

Another thing we hear about is people repeating speeches that have came up time and time again, this is always going to happen and to be honest I dont have a problem with it peoples opinions change and new people will join our world, what I would say is more of a problem is speeches about the same thing being said by two or three people around the same time, instead of replying to speeches others have made and joining in with them.

The foundation of our world is communication. The Streets are always going to be the focus of what we do here, or I certainly hope so at least. I know more and more we revert to the coffee shops and opium dens of IRC Avenue, but that is not the way life should be. It really isn't.

Over the last week, 164 people died because of a series of wars. A combined total of 6.71 YEARS work was wiped out... and almost nothing was said. An example, if I may:

X wars Y, and wins. The sons or daughters of Y's members come to the streets to talk about the injustice (as they probably see it) of their parents, and late bosses demise. They are told:

1 - Rank up and do something about it.

2 - Your opinion is worthless due to your rank.

3 - Stop crying, waah waah waah.

Should someone actually manage to not take one of those 3 options, and defend their boss, X:

1 - You are such a kiss-ass, your opinion is meaningless.

We have travelled so far down this road of abandoning debate in favour of personal attacks and dismissing the opinions of those talking that most people do not even bother starting them any more.

Another recent example:

JohnnyAxe shoots Oliver. A crew leader he grew up with, for a long time the strongest CL in the six cities, his friend! Only 7 people can muster a response, not one of them calling him on it. It's not hard to do so respectfully, it's really not.

I am not saying that every action needs to be debated and argued about, but damnit, something as momentous as that should surely be commented on. When we fall back on the old favourites of "Omerta prevents us from talking about it" then there is no coming back. Allowances are made all the time to move away from the old values in favour of making our experience in this life enjoyable (petty crimes, shooting, jail breaking, need I go on?) why do we stand so steadfastly in favour of Omerta when all that happens as a result is that our streets die.

It is the streets which drives us, it is here that the passion can be felt; it is here that the best of the interaction upon which our society is based takes place; this is the first place we look when something has happened; it is the first place newer bloodlines look when the reach our shores. When these streets die, so does our way of life. I know few of us are as passionate as our ancestors, but has all the intensity gone? If so, what remains?

I've always been of the opinion that anything can be said, any topic breached; provided, of course, that it is not to the detriment of erta. If you bring things up in a respectful manner, and talk about an actual issue rather than resorting to slights of character, you will befall no harm nine times out of ten. And for the other time? That's just an occupational hazard I'm afraid, we are in the Mob after all.

Having said that, Scotto has a point; it seems to the itinerant observer that we are in a rut, that too much is left unsaid perhaps due to fear, even for me, a constant variable to these streets, I find this one hard to call.

To raise another question, if the situation is as suggested, that we have somehow lost our way; on whose head be it? The leaders and their upper echelons for giving the impression that if one is outspoken, perhaps even respectfully so, then one will have a tragic accident. Or is it the fault of us plebians, where we have lost not our voice, but our fortitude and passion?

In my humble opinion, it is a little of both. As long as people get promotions and kudos for doing nothing but crimes and jailbreaks, why would they bother speaking out? Leaders must promote the idea that street activity is a major part of their role. The Gods have done all they can in rewarding us for it, there is a constant stream of competitions based upon it... and yet we see them in a slump, still.

Omerta is a funny old thing in our world. Were someone from, say, Moretay's family come out here and start talking about their plans to attack JohnnyAxe, that is clearly a breach of trust. This is just an example people, before you go getting your panties all bunched up. Talking about a family's future plans, especially something like that, would not go down well.

Were Johnny and Moretay to war, the obits would make it clear reasonably fast - so where is the harm in talking about it? Either while the war is still going on, or once it is over? Again, some common sense would tell you what's acceptable and what isn't, discussing a specific hitter's flight plans for example would be unforgivable, but talking about the reasons for it, and even how it is going in general from either side... I just can't see a down side.
