"The good thing about eight dead Godfathers and Godmothers, three vacant cities and an era of long-lasting peace shattered is that we have a whole lot to talk about." Kid looked around him. It was fairly empty in the speakeasy on 13th street, most likely because it was just a Monday night and people preferred some peace and quiet after a more demanding weekend. In a bar you could always count on the bartender though and Kid interpreted his raised eyebrow as an invitation to elaborate. "If what we had grown accustomed too for so long, so suddenly changed, it begs us to evaluate what we lost. Or even, consider what opportunities arose with the departure of the common. After the downfall of Chicago, both Spaceman and the late Salvatore Luciano aimed to answer some questions that people might have had after that event. I'm not sure how to interpret the eerie silence that happened after that speech, but I guess it's simply because people agreed that the shared insights were solid, which assumes recognition of the problems." Kid nodded at the bartender to slide another glass of water his way. The night was still relatively early and he had to meet people later, so Kid was aiming to stay sober today. "The devastating events of Sunday that touched everyone in each of the cities made room for a lot of additional questions. If I start with a more general one, I'd like to wonder about whether we should restore or progress after what happened?" "Since we can't actually restore the lives that were lost, we can only aim to recreate what those who died stood for. But with the initial argumentation about Chicago's removal, to me it's not so certain all they stood for was as happy as some of us might have thought, or have been told. The fact that large parts of the West Coast abandoned the pattern of peace on the next day as well hints that peace was as much a house of cards, as it was a solid foundation shared by the whole country. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as our hierarchical structures offer a lot of good things. But it's fair to recognise that it comes with risks as well. Most things beautiful are equally fragile." After taking a sip of water, Kid looked over his shoulder as the hinges of the door squeaked while two men found their way inside. He hadn't seen them before, but that was the beauty of these kind of places. The clientele was diverse and that used to make for more interesting conversations. "On the other hand," He continued, now facing the bartender again. "Progression means determining direction towards what's more positive than that where we came from. And even if we were to establish what that is, it'll take an effort to get there. Now usually 'something better' is easy to get motivated for. However it's something that people should believe is actually better instead of feel that it's a dangling carrot." Realising he wouldn't get much word out of this bartender tonight, Kid lowered his voice a bit. "Looking at yesterday, do we know what we want for tomorrow? Dare we tell?" |
