Rayne just finished her shift at the South Philadelphia cemetery, it wasn't the best job out there but it was about the only thing she could get that paid halfway decent. Surely there were other ways of making money, which she did have her hands in as well but being the lowest person on the totem pole meant her cut wasn't big. Mind you most of which were illegal, well all of it besides the cemetery gig. The times around these parts were a tough one, jobs were seldom and having a roof above your head wasn't a certainty. Luckily for her she had both. A steady income and a small room within the Labor Union down on Race Street, it wasn't much but it was home. The job at the cemetery took a bit to get used to and it wasn't for the faint of heart. It did take her a couple of days to get over the smell of death and the constant dirt under her finger nails, well... the dirt under her nails was truly an issue for her. It was definitely on the top of her list for her pet peeves. There were numerous times, she almost didn't go in or quit while she was on the job. That was until she realized the true potential each grave obtained, the treasures within that made it all worth while. A little bit of dirt under the nails wasn't such a big issue when there were hundreds of dollars worth of items in each box, it was more then her weekly pay. Did she feel bad? Maybe the first time but that quickly changed when she brought the first couple of pieces to pawn shop. She remembered it clearly, placing them on the counter. It was a pair of silver rings and an old pocket watch. She wasn't expecting much, really anything would have been better then nothing. The shop owner looked her up and down almost as if he knew exactly where these pieces came from. She remembered every word that came out of his mouth, like it was just yesterday. Well it wasn't yesterday but you get the point. He muttered a few choice words. "So you work at the graveyard, stole someones final possessions and are looking to fence them?" He looked around making sure no one was looking, satisfied that the coast was clear he slid her $500. The man took the items off the counter and tucked them into his pocket. She figured he would have just put them into his case to sell, so the whole putting them in his pocket threw her for a bit of a loop. She wanted to question him about it but didn't want to risk losing the wad of cash he had just given her. With a squint of her eyes and a shrug of her shoulders she remembered taking a couple steps towards the front door when she heard his voice. "Hey you!" She turned her head around to see a creepy smile on his face. "If you happen to come across more stuff like this bring it here, I'll make sure to pay you well." It was music to her ears and more importantly money in her pocket. Day in and day out or at least every time she worked at the cemetery, she visited the pawn shop with some sort of goodies. Was kind of a routine of hers; cemetery, pawn shop, home. It was always the same, that was until that one faithful day. As she exited the pawn shop, just outside the door stood a guy. She gave him a quick look up and down, he was good looking. The whole unbuttoned collar shirt and 5 o'clock shadow worked for him. Normally she would have stopped and flirted a bit but it was cold and she was tired, it was just time to get home, shower and raid her bosses liquor cabinet. It was kind of a hobby of hers, the raiding of the liquor cabinet that was. Without much more thought about it, she started her trek home. The thoughts of the first taste of booze after a nice warm shower was at the front most part of her list. That's when she felt it, the cold hand slide into her pocket. A hand that was not hers. She felt the money getting pulled from her pocket, all $7,500 of it. It was a good day, some very important people got buried today and seemed there was just about to be another. Without hesitation her hand became a fist as she turned around swinging as hard as she could. A swing that connected, instantly sending a sharp pain into her hand and up her arm. "WHAT THE FUCK! WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE????" The words spewed out of her mouth even before she caught a glimpse of who it was. Turning completely around and looking down she gazed upon the person, it was the guy that was just outside the pawn shop. He was now a couple feet back from her, on the ground and holding his lip with one hand and her money with the other. The rage was starting to take over, luckily for him she had left her gun back home. "You best give that back, if you know what's good for you!" |

Petah was hanging out in one of his favorite spots in Philadelphia, just outside the pawn shop in South Side. It was a great place to make some easy money. All day people desperate for cash would head inside to trade their valuables and then come back out with pockets full of cash, cash for Petah to take from those pockets. It was great, they did all the work and he got all the money. Usually, they were long gone before they even noticed they were missing it, Petah was pretty good at it... it was a skill he had worked on a lot. He'd just slide two fingers discreetly into the person's pocket and gently pull out the money they had just gotten, the only tricky part really was figuring out what pocket the money was in. Today had been a pretty slow day but there was a lady inside at the counter and Petah was gonna get her money before he took off for the night. She counted the money and stuffed it into her pocket as she headed out the door, she stopped for a minute turned to face him on her way out, she was an attractive lady for sure, but money is money. He smiled at her and as soon as she turned to walk away he reached over and swiped the wad of cash from her pocket. It didn't go so well this time though. She spun around and punched him in the face so quickly that Petah didn't even have time to react, he fell back on his ass and grabbed his now sore lip. She immediately began yelling... "WHAT THE FUCK! WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE????" Petah was just in shock that someone so little could pack such a punch and sat there staring at her on his ass, unsure what to say and still holding her money in his free hand. Now she was threatening him, he better give it back 'if he knows what's good for him'. He really wasn't sure what to do now, he could understand why she would be upset, he did rob her... but he also didn't want to return the money just because she said so. He sat there thinking for a few minutes while she glared at him all squinty-eyed holding her hand out for the money. As he was thinking he felt a sharp pain in his shin that snapped him out of his daze. She had kicked him in the shin, and again and again, and again. "Ouch ouch ouch, okay okay, chill!" He said as he stood back up and handed the money back. "No need for the kicking, those shoes are fucking pointy!" Petah said after he had handed the money back, making sure to stay out of leg range the whole time. "Soooo... sorry about that? Usually, people don't even notice. I am Petah, nice to meet you?" He said holding out his hand, unsure of what else to say or do at this point. |

Rayne glared down at his hand, was he really expecting her to reach out and shake it? Was he really now trying to be nice? She was a bit confused about this tactic: who in their right mind pick pockets someone, then gets punched in the face and kicked repeatedly in the shin, then is forced to give the money back, and then stands up to introduce themselves. Usually the normal person would get up and run in the other direction, well either that or say some choice words before tucking their tail between their legs and walking away. Not this guy though, it only meant one thing. He wasn't normal. He still stood their with his hand out, had been out for the better part of a minute. She was still pissed, there was no way she was shaking his hand. Looking him in the eyes then glancing down at his hand before redirecting her eyes back up to his. "You want me to now shake your hand? Are fucking insane?" She said in a rather nasty tone. He slowly put his hand down, tucking it into his pocket. Rayne made sure to keep her eyes trained on him, she realized she still had the money he had returned to her in her hand. In one motion she took the cash and shoved it into her bra. It was the safest place she could think of at the time. "Ah, the ole money in the bra trick. Clever girl!" "If you even think about it..." Petah threw up his hands in front of him and took a step back. "Whoa! Just whoa! I may be a pickpocket but I'm not a creeper." Rayne looked him up and down before smiling and commenting. "Are you sure about that, PETAH?" |

Petah glared back for a moment or two with some squinty eyes of his own at that last comment before speaking. "Hey now, listen you. First of all, I am a lovely fellow! Secondly, why did you say my name like that?!" Rayne could clearly tell it bothered him because she smirked before kicking him in the shin again several times. "PETAH!" She yelled at him each time her foot connected with his shin. Petah wasn't really sure what to do, he thought about kicking her back but decided just to keep backing up and hope the kicking would stop. Unfortunately for him, a wall got in the way of that plan. "Oh come on! Stop it would ya!" She paused and tilted her head as if she was in deep thought for a few minutes, but at least the kicking stopped. The pause and silence was starting to last a little bit too long though and Petah began to wonder if she was having a stroke or something. He began to wave his hand in front of her face to try and snap her out of it. "Hello!? Kicky lady!? Helllllooooooo?" The angry mystery woman straightened her head and smacked Petah's hand away from her face. "What the hell are you doing? She asked looking more puzzled than angry now. "Oh, you're okay I was worried about you for a minute there! I told you my name but you still haven't told me yours. If you're going to continue to kick me what shall I call you... Kicky? Or do you have a name?" Petah figured she was probably still upset with him when she didn't answer right away. He knew she didn't want to shake hands and thought he was a creep... hmmm. As he was thinking about how to fix this situation before his shin was gone completely he decided maybe food was the answer. He was still carrying a fresh muffin he was planning on eating, maybe she liked muffins? Petah decided that sacrificing his delicious muffin was worth it if it made her stop kicking him so he held it out in front of him and tried to put the friendliest smile he could manage on his face. "Muffin?" |

Rayne was still a bit pissy having to deal with this entire situation. She was tired, dirty and extremely hungry. He definitely caught her at the wrong time, that was until out of no where he pulled a muffin out of his pocket. It was his way of offering a bit of peace between the two. She debated on giving him one more kick but the muffin enticed her enough. "Give me that!" She snatched it right out of his hand and gave it a look over. "Is that fuzzy?" She brought the muffin closer to her face, giving it a closer look. "It is fuzz, what the hell! Why is there fuzz on this muffin?" Petah grabbed the muffin out her hand examining it himself. "Hmm... well seems you are correct. That's definitely fuzz, not sure how that got on there." He gave it a quick thought. "Well it was in my pocket, I must have had fuzzy stuff in my pocket." She watched as he picked off each piece of fuzz before holding it back out to her. "There you go, fuzz free muffin!" Rayne wasn't sure about this muffin but didn't want to be rude, she took it from him and stuffed it into her pocket. "I think I'm gonna save it for later but hey thanks. Oh by the way, the name is Rayne." |
