"Jack Mezzo. Philadelphia." The words escaped from the lips of the man she knew as padre. What followed was his last breath. ... PacciorettiOne of the most curious aspects of her childhood was that she never once questioned who she was. Typically, it is expressed or expected that misfits have an intuition about the nature of their circumstances. 'I didn't feel like I belonged' or 'There must be more to my story'. Not for Connie. No, her mind was utterly convinced she was the daughter of an olive oil mogul, powerful, wealthy and destined to marry the offspring of the Cassaro branch of La Costa Nostra. Connie would soon learn that the agenda of destiny can never be assumed. The two most powerful men in Cassaro operated on drastically differing sides of the law. Intertwined by a historical business loan, a young Genco Paccioretti and his olive oil empire would be built on an investment negotiated from another rising face in the settlement. Stefano Sommatino prized himself on the idea of a 'perfect life'. Pristine, immaculate, virgin. A blatant contrast to the gritty, underhanded dealings he made from various rackets across the town. It was from these gains he was able to make a start up payment to Genco Paccioretti, who in turn purchased the land for an olive grove and began to harvest his fortune. Genco paid a terrible price in return. Stefano's desire for a perfect life extended to the future life of his infant son, Marco. He wanted Marco to be prepared for the world as it should be for him. Wealth, education, notoriety, no detail was omitted. His obsession extended as far as his future bride, who in his mind, would be well educated, well mannered, intelligent, wise, cunning and submissive. She would endure a lifetime of shaping in preparation for her role. The decision to surrender his unwanted adopted daughter, smuggled out of the United States to apparent safety, would be the single most deplorable move Genco would ever make. Constanza Paccioretti. Years came to pass. Constanza's intense upbringing executed by doting house staff and a reluctant mother, she grew up unaware that her life was not her own. That mother was not her own. Her sisters and father were not her own. Approaching the age of sixteen, introductions were made to a pampered young man called Marco Sommatino. Events began to fall into place. ... CassaroA remorseful Genco eventually attempted to repay his debt to Stefano, sparing the girl he had grown to love. It was rejected, Genco furthered his protests, preparing to hide her, if need be. It was on a warm Tuesday afternoon in the olive gardens, Constanza Paccioretti would flee from her adoptive family. Her mother, who lay dead. Her sisters, who lay dead. Her father, who lay dead. She would flee from the Sommatino's, flee from the life she was carved into, and flee to find the name uttered to her through blood and gore. The journey from Sicily gave the young girl much time to contemplate her trauma. She processed experiences logically, however, and logic was presently moving forwards. A new life. Following a difficult interaction with immigration, her name was butchered to Connie Cassaro. It was of no real concern to her, knowing her entire life had been planned to fulfill another's left her feeling with little she could call her own. Was her name event Paccioretti? Chance meetings with various operators within America approached her, however there was only one city she was drawn to. Philadelphia. It was there she would meet a number of individuals, each presenting her with new lessons and opportunities. Her focus swayed from the man she sought, and instead allowed herself to indulge in a life she was in control of. She soon learned Jack Mezzo was dead, as was his daughter. His grandson however appeared to be at the top of the pyramid she now scuttled beneath. A chance meeting with him taught her all she needed to know. ... MezzoSee, Jack had the same idea as his mother. Following the death of Wednesday, his daughter, and the eventual loss of Artie Bucco, her suitor, something had to be done about the infant girl. She could not follow in their footsteps, he could not allow her to step so innocently into her own grave. Arrangements were made with a contact in Sicily, she would be hidden from the seven cities strewn with murder and loss. Fate would bring her back to Philadelphia though, back to her brother and back to her name. Back to Race Street. |
