Introduction
Clicking around I found the thread by Syn in the OOC forum about renaming Downtown for LA or DT. It feels like a suggestion, but it's also an inquiry so perhaps OOC warrants it. But I assume it's mostly there, because it might reach more people, which I think is a good idea to rally community input and gather enthusiasm for specific choices.
For this, and other cases, I think it can be made more practical. Hence the following proposal that exists of two parts.
Proposal 1.A - Polls
Introduce a create-a-poll functionality with forum threads. It would require a question and N options.
Benefit 1: It allows quantitive support for an idea. People might agree with something, but don't have the time to agree in a post, or they feel it's spammy to say "I agree." without reiterating the arguments someone else already said.
Benefit 2: If this would be available on each forum, not just OOC or suggestions, it can be interesting to gauge community sentiment towards initiatives and attitude by the roleplaying population. Imagine TylerDurden being the top gun that decimates all that close. If Person X calls him and his methods out in the streets, many might agree, but few would express that out of fear. Now anonymous indicative support won't change a thing directly. But it might inspire motivation to organise a revolution that benefits a majority. Or it might inspire a leader to reconsider their ways.
Con regarding Benefit 2: It doesn't fit in a RP setting. Ideally support is rallied through networking and being smart at it. It's part of the excitement of this game. Despite that, it might inspire action or beliefs that without the anonymous support would remain hidden. This con focusses on when the poll is used to gather anti-support for whatever happens in the streets/community of course.
Restrictions: Enable poll for N credits.
We,or I, don't care for every person with a rage, weird idea to launch polls that could be meaningless. If someone is genuinely interested to push their idea, they'd provide proper arguments and wouldn't mind the investment, assuming they believe in the case they are making. This promotes the use of the functionality for matters that ... matter.
Proposal 1.B - Trending Polls
If N people voted on a poll, it would be considered trending. It would be significant for the community (Suggestions, OOC, Street only).
This would trigger a dismissible announcement-box at the the top of the screen, similar like what happens when it's raining credits or the poker tourney starts.
Everyone in the community is talking about "Downtown District Renaming Options".
Visit poll
Extra benefit: Recently Squishy announced how he would divide his time. He will specifically allocate time to advance the game. Part of that is driven by what he deems necessary of course. But quantitative support through a poll could help him determine priorities in that area.
Disclaimer: The poll would serve as an indication of sentiment. This isn't a democracy, so poll-results are not equal to what would/should happen.
Well, that's it. It's something I had on my mind for longer, but got a push by Syn's post.
