"Here, take a seat" Witchy patted the space on the park bench beside her and the young man that was passing sat down. "Cigarette" ? she offered her packet across, taking one out for herself and lighting it. Taking a deep draw on the cigarette, she held it for a second before puffing out the smoke. "Funny old thing is Chinese Whispers, wouldn't you agree" she smiled at the totally confused looking young man "Let me tell you a funny thing that happened this morning. I was having breakfast, listening to the radio and reading the morning paper, when there was a knock on the door. I opened to door to find a young man standing there. He leaned in close and whispered, "Mute Don". Well I can tell you I was more than a little taken aback. He started to leave as quickly as he arrived and I shouted after him. As he turned the corner he turned his head, smiled and said, "Chinese Whispers pass it on". "Having played this game many times as a child I set out to find out the original message" I came across 'Brute Ron', 'Fruit Bun', and many others until I finally reached the source and the message was 'Cute Hun'" She turned to the young man and smiled "So the moral of the story is, if you have something to say to me, cut out the Chinese Whispers and come say it to my face or I may get the wrong message" |

Ah yes, the old "Mute Leader" whisper. Gotta love it. Because we all hail the need for street presence in our leaders. They must be out on the street to host debates, or give out personal policy, or just to make an appearance to piss off the fibbies and the media photogs. Makes me wonder how much work is getting done in the headquarters when leaders area always out on the streets making grandiose announcements only to be lauded by sycophantic followers. I'm not a family head, and I'm a relative nobody in this thing of ours, but it seems to me that if you've got a family, your first priority is communication with them, and work belongs inside of the homestead. You've worked hard to get your place at the top, and it seems counterintuitive to be mandated to show for public appearances. You did that well before you got your authorization, or else you wouldn't be there, right? So to all the people who whisper "Mute Don" or the equivalent, let them whisper. If they want to end the cycle of muteness, let them be the first to make their voice heard. |

While the debate about Mutes will always disgrace our streets, I'd like to point out that what I saw my crew leader just post is that if anyone has a problem or a matter of conduct to discuss with her, please come to her and not whisper about it behind back and closed doors. Spreading rumors is the function of our tipsters.... others most likely will just bring about misunderstandings and confusion. |

Perhaps I'm not as young as I used to be, but I'm quite baffled by this entire quandry placed before me. You say if people have a problem, they should say it to your face. Yet surely the fact that someone could have been construed as having said "Mute Don" to your face given the context of the tale makes the entire speech redundant? Unless you are telling a charming fable of course, in which case I stand corrected. If not though, surely you have taken the words of someone unknown stranger to heart, given that you have come out here to make a speech with no real meaning; if we take the point of speaking to your face as moot considering it has already been done by the individual who inspired the speech. Again, I'll eat my words if this was all an exercise in allegories. But what do I know? I'm just a Goomba. |

Sure, your first priority should be your family, of course it should. Let's not dismiss the importance of public activity, though. Being the head of a family does not consume your every waking moment, if it does, you aren't doing it right. The streets are IMPORTANT, I have lost count of the amount of times we've had to have this conversation over the generations, and still it doesn't sink in. For the most part, if you're not out here at all you will be labelled a mute. People that aren't in your family will consider you a "shit leader" for being a mute. Then they will shoot you for it... that's not a threat, it's not even my opinion (close, but not exactly) that is just what history teaches us will happen. Yes, way back when there were some silent leaders that went on to greatness, Father John being the most obvious example. These days, it just doesn't happen. As for openly telling a Don CL to their faces that you believe they're a mute/bad leader/ have bad breath... that rarely ends well, so I can see why people wouldn't. If you're hearing the whispers though, that is enough. Congratulations on the intelligence network, it's not always easy to find out what's being said behind your back, and these are often the most important things to listen to - that and finding out who is saying it. I apologise for the somewhat superior tone of this speech, I am unwell and far too tired to go back and rephrase it. He retires to his comfy armchair with a Lemsip (patent pending) |

i for one believe a Crew Leader should be mute. They should only come ot the street when they have something important to say. not just to spam or please an audience. Our streets are filled with crap by all ranks from gangster to capo. Very little of it is useful. A CL runs a family or a city. Gangsters in LA shouldn't give a shit about what a capo in NY does. If he nees to know, his CL will tell him. There are avenues for CL's to discuss things among themselves. The whole world doesn't need to know every little thing that happens. If crew leader A whacks crew leader B, Then CL C, D and E should find out why and formulate some plan to deal with it. Hell they may have been on the decision. That is their call. And if they want Joe Gangster to know they themselves will tell them. There is no reason for a public announcement. Since when Does a Made man, capo, boss, consig or a Don have to explain to a gangster why they did something. Maybe if families were run like families are meant to be in this thing of ours, these street would not be so cluttered with litter and everyone would know their place in our society. The less crap in the street, the better our world is. A silent CL gets more respect from me than one that talks just to hear their voice. |

Exactly what I was thinking Signore Canine. The Don of a family should not be told anyway what they have to and have not to do to be a good crew leader. There is nothing set in stone as to who things should be run. The Don has enough things to worry about without having to create a public profile for themselves. They should be silent, talking only to those they trust to be near them. Those then should be known to be the ones whos word the Don carries, and it is them who will make announcments for him/her. |

Ahhh, that old chestnut. My favourite. He sighs mournfully Can you tell me then, gents, what the point of the streets is exactly? Surely none of us as mafioso should be out here discussing anything at all - Omerta, right? There is no mafia and even if there was I wouldn't talk about it outside the HQ. THIS place is built upon the streets, they are the heart and soul of the world - or they should be. He readies the OOCitis vaccination kit... We give up realism in favour of gameplay almost all the time. Since when do mobsters commit a crime every 3 minutes? A felony every 12? Since when do we murder the homeless in their droves? Since when do we bust someone out of jail every 20 seconds in frenzy's of antiauthoritarianism? We don't, that is the game play. Why is it okay to fall back on "it's not RP" when we're defending the right to be lazy, when we're pushing the game further and further toward IRC and button clicking while the heart of it is left stagnant. He stabs himself in the thigh with the needle and depresses the plunger, shuddering slightly he snaps back to reality. Where was I? Oh yes, imagine a scenario, if you will. Johnny Short-Pants arrives here one day, a veritable mafia virgin. He looks around, picks things up quickly; he wants to find a family to join... how is he to judge? How is anyone to know the personality of any of the CLs unless they come out here and interact? Oh wait, he could always swing by the coffee shops for a chat, I guess. |

Most presidents by the age of ten, knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew older. And having made that decision, they started on a long and arduous path that would eventually lead to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They became leaders in their schools, graduated to becoming activists in college, rallied in their neighborhoods, ran for local seats and made their way up the chain of elected offices all the way up to the big Oval one. During this time, they gladhanded constituents, campaigned for financial contributions, made speeches about their policy, and were seen on every street corner in every small town of America with gaudy posters adorned with red, white, and blue. And then... they became President. And the majority of the public appearances stopped. Instead, these men met with their cabinets, entertained and talked policy with other leaders, worked on treaties and agreements, and occasionally planned wars. Their days of stomping the pavement were almost, if not completely done. Once a year they'd come out, and give a brief account of the State of the Union. Once or twice they'd make public appearances while on the way to a summit, or utter a few words after a conference of world leaders. Even today, we rarely meet with our elected officials out on the streets unless there is some national disaster, or if the nation is involved in a conflict. Where am I going with this? Most crewleaders, when they succeeded at their first petty crime, knew exactly where they wanted the life of crime to lead them. And so the campaigning began. The speeches, the talks of change... the plans to build a strong foundation of support. And then their authorization came. And many of the public appearances stopped. Some lessened in frequency. Now, these men met with their underbosses, discussed policy with other leaders over coffee, developed racketeering rings in their cities, and occasionally planned wars. Their days of stomping the pavement were almost, if not completely done. Some people believe religiously that our leaders must be in the public face each and every day saying something. There's comfort apparently in seeing them walk down the streets, spouting off conversations about the weather and arguing the definitions of words. But not all people. There are some who feel that the leaders have more important things to do, and they should leave the every day conversations to the next generation of up and coming mob politicians. When they have something that needs to be said, they'll make their way out to the streets. And when they do... people will listen, because they'll know that it was important enough to warrant a personal appearance. |

And 3 years after being elected they get out there again to ensure they get re-elected. Furthermore, they aren't seen in public only occassionally at all, they are giving press conferences and blowing their own trumpets as often as they are physically capable of - such is the modern world. You vote for a President based on what he has done so far, and what he promises to do once elected. Should he then change his personality completely, hasn't he just conned you? Hasn't he just effectively lied to you to get to where he wants to be? Most CLs can find the time to get out here. It is only a few that don't, if everyone else can do it and run their family, why can't they? As I said in my first response, if running your HQ and talking to your family takes up your every waking moment, they you aren't doing it right. |
