Love Started by: Howard on Jan 30, '08 15:23
Howard pushes past a crowd of people when one looks at him

What the fuck you looking at?

The man looks away, Howard continues on his way. He grabs a crate and proceeds to stand on it. He clears his throat, lights one his cigars purchased from O'Rian Cigars. And begins to speak

So you wonder what I am on about? Well I don't mean love in the sense of loving your mum,dad or brother or even you girlfriend for that matter but love of familia. When does someone stop being just liked by you when do you start to 'love' someone.

For me itis when I have known a said person for a while and we have a strong friendship and I can trust them with my life. That is when someone stops becoming a friend for me but a 'lover' of my life, for example I 'loved' Nikkiphoenix, she was a great women and very nice to me.

Howard steps down and steps back and waits for the first response

I walk along the street and see a man standing on crates. I wonder and I decide to go over to that man. I'm listening to what he has to say. As he is done I start to talk.

"Dear Howard, this is a very difficult and also dangerous issue in my opinion. Love is one of the strongest - if not the strongest - feeling there are so I would be careful to use the word 'love' in our world."

"Love can the be the best thing happen to you, it can make you stronger and better than you have ever thought you could be and love can destroy you, completely. Love can bring down a human being. Love forces people to stupid actions, your brain is shut down. Very dangerous."

"I haven't experienced love in this thing of ours for now but who knows, I am very carefull with that issue but back to the topic. For me, love is a pure dedication to another person, you don't just trust this person with your life, the person is your life, this person holds your life in their hand. Love is stronger than everything else. Love starts where rational thinking ends, when your decisions made by your heart, sounds harsh but that's what it is to me."

"Well, that's my two cents on this one. Thanks for your time."

I take a step back and wait for other people to state their opinion.

Lost Priest over hears the word "Love" uttered in the streets and immediately comes to see what the hell has gone wrong
As he gets closer he can hear the mans speech about a concept he believes to be love

Sir I am most sure Love is not the word your looking for. The ideas i assume you are attaching to love are Respect of, and Loyalty to someone but i would like to point out that is not what love is.

And the point that you reach this sense of respect and loyalty can always depend on different things, as it has for me. I of course respect the leaders because they don't just give you a crew you must earn it. But to respect them as great leaders depends on their actions and how their crews handle themselves.

When it comes to loyalty, this is also a thing that needs to grow. Of course, you don't enter a crew for a short term stay and you are loyal to them for taking you in off the streets, but this can become more to where you defend their name in the streets and boast of their greatness to all ears. To get to that point is also takes development between the person and yourself.

As for other members of the family the these points remain valid but are more directly involve the person themselves.

Thats my half cent on that. If you wish to further discuss whether or not love is the proper term or not i would be glad to explain more in depth.

Lost Priest finds himself a curb and sits down to hear the other mumblings of the crowd.

47 stops for a minute to watch some sort of odd street perfomance about love. He throws a quarter into Howard's hat.

I can't say I'm a fan, but it takes guts to perform in the streets.

47 fades back into relative obscurity and walks away.

Cathy Parks is stood nearby when she notices Howard speaking. As she usually did when one of her ranks was talking, she slips into the crowd to listen. For the most part, business took up so much of her time, she found it difficult to join in the conversation. However, after all of yesterdays' events she wanted to afford herself some luxury time and decided she would join in.

"Love for the family Howard?

"Well for me, love and loyalty are two words that are intertwined. I don't believe you can have one without the other. And I believe that the moment you realise you have love for the family, is the moment when you stop thinking about your own personal needs.

"When we first take the decision to join a Family, we are stepping out of the normal boundaries and rules of what constitutes the civilian lifestyle. We now currently reside in an era where money is sparse - The Great Depression - where work is extremely difficult to come by, and where supporting your family if you don't own your own land seems like an impossibility.

"Therefore when most of us find ourselves on the shores of this world, we are penniless and disorientated. We have a choice of two paths: hard labour for pittance, or the path that deviates into the criminal world.

"I think the majority of us who are gifted the opportunity to bring ourselves out of poverty leaves us unapologetically grateful. But this gratitude is still not "love" or loyalty. This is merely a show of thanks for shelter and a chance for much needed cash.

"However, working for an organisation, is not an easy thing. A large proportion of the money you make tends to go directly into your Boss' pocket, your life too can easily be spent should your Family became engaged in a war time situation.

"So again we reach a crossroads, the path diverging into two unknown territories. The first we can take is to keep our own needs at the forefront of our mind, to do just enough to keep the Boss happy. This of course is self-serving behaviour. You look out for yourself and your own needs only. The minimal work pays for the protection you receive, but nothing more.

"And I think for the people that take that path, it is quite rare that you advance to a high level in this world. If you have a babu for a Boss, then you might fare quite well. But generally self-serving behaviour will never get you trusted. Self-serving behaviour will never win you respect or rarely gift you positions within the Organisation you work for because you will never become trusted. And ultimately, in my honest opinion, self-serving behaving will end up with you dead.

"So to the other path. The path of "love" as you put it Howard, or the path of loyalty. Loyalty in our world is largely based on trust. If you trust your leader to make the right decisions, to keep yourself and your city safe, trust them to work with the other Organisations in the Six Cities in a way that benefits your Family, then you will find yourself steadily becoming loyal.

"For many of us, it's a big leap of faith and I believe that loyalty or love is neither won nor given easily.

"But then again it depends on your mind state. I believe for you personally Howard, you were loyal to Nikki because she was nice to you. But being nice does not keep people alive. Being nice does not help your Organisation to rise to the top and slowly become one of the biggest powers in our Six Cities.

"So for me as a Leader, I reserve the niceties for few moments. I treat my members fairly, but the word "nice" does not often come into the relationship I have with everyone in my employ. I save "nice" for quiet moments and friends, behind closed doors. The external, the face I show most of the time, is that of someone who can be ruthless when it comes to securing the safety of her Organisation and that of an indifferent business mind.

"Though I may not be deemed as "nice" by many, and my behaviour will not win me loyalty from those who put that attribute as their top reason for evoking "love" for the Famiglia, the fact that I still retain the largest number of members of all the Families in the Six Cities and that I have not fallen in a war, my legacy spilled out into the Streets and quickly washed away by rain, should be testament to the fact that I put everything into keeping my people safe and alive.

"Surely that in itself is a good foundation for those who serve me to feel loyalty or love. That further feeling becoming only stronger with every day and every action I implement in the Head Quarters and in Philadelphia."
