"Lisbon is a beautiful place", a foreign traveller would say after visiting the magical Baleal beach just an hour's drive north of Lisbon, or maybe after visiting the Museu de Artes Decorativas, the Museum of Decorative Arts. Visitors would admire Palácio Azurara and his brilliant collection of furniture, paintings, textiles, silver, and ceramics shown throughout the building. Portugal really was a great place for a vacation In fact, the best time to visit would probably be when the weather is warm. Not hot, but warm. Summer is when the local attraction spots are teeming with tourists, but if you book a hotel somewhere between March and May or September and October, then you will find that the hotel booking prices are way cheaper. Plus - crowded shores on beaches doesn't particularly sound nice. And then there is Artur Ivens Ferraz, the appointed Prime Minister by President Carmona after being promoted to General in 1928. It is now the year 1929, and Piper knew that it wouldn't be long before someone else will hold office. One can say though that he holds a ... very impressionable resume. From being a Portugese military officer to a Minister of Trade, Colonies and Finances, he has tactical experience. Although despite what the local residents say about receiving Ferraz in triumph, there are still many issues rooted in the city that cause one hell of a raging debate, that still have not been dealt with properly. Piper knew things, that even Ferraz didn't. You'd think he be more knowledgeable about what really goes on in his streets, after getting high distinction from the School of the Army in 1893. See for yourself. You could also ask Piper. She grew up living in fear of the many criminal organizations working in and around Portugal. Piper knew of the danger zones, actually. One of them being Fortaleza, just 5608 km from Lisbon. Piper will tell you of the insanely high level of violence and murder rate, which has raised a lot ever since Brazil had been established as a "decent" place for tourists to travel to. You know those big bad bullies hanging around in bars, airports, hotels and nightclubs? It is common underground knowledge that they are probably a part of the most notorious Brazillian mafia, PCC, founded by eight prisoners whose names are still unknown to this day. Nobody talks or approaches them unless you have close ties. So, in conclusion, unbeknownst to the many wanderlust-filled backpackers and rich tourists, the bloodthirsty gang has branched out to many regions and will continue to spread if their ruthlessness is not stopped. People have even moved from Brazil to seek shelter in Portugal, but what is the use if Portugal will end up being corrupted by the gangs too? There was a military crackdown where at least 14 members of a drug cartel were killed, but even then, justice couldn't be served because the damage had already been done. And they were dead. No time to rot in jail for all the times they enticed innocent young boys into their crew, claiming that they would give them a new and better life. But they were wrong. The worst outbreak of violence in Brazil had already been recorded and it would surely start to spread to Portugal. Brazil and Portugal, the two countries that Piper had lived in before she emigrated to the states. It's estimated that there'll be around one million Portugese Americans in the U.S before the 20th century. Luckily for Piper, she didn't have to worry so much about fitting in when there was already a Portugese community forming on the West Coast in California. So she is staying in Los Angeles until she can find another home to settle in. And before anyone should have to ask her why she would leave her birth city, she would simply tell them about her ancestry. Her 'papai' or dad, is Adriano Da Rosa. To others, he was known as "Shorty" because, well.. He was short. And stubby. Everyone knew not to mess with him though because he was a dangerous boss that strictly lived by the gun, and would die by the gun, which inevitably did happen when he was ratted out by one of his fellow soldiers. He was a good man, though. Adriano knew who he would follow and take orders from for the rest of his life, and his judgement was respected by many other mobsters in the business. And how could Piper ever be born without her own loving mother? Dores Da Rosa, and her name was quite true to her, which literally meant 'full of sorrow'. Always anxious, paranoid, miserable and stressed. Piper often found her mother tangled in her bed sheets, crying. Piper never had to ask. She already knew why. Being a mobster's wife can be a good thing because it was guaranteed that you could live your whole life with your finances intact and you had countless protection rackets to look out for you, but she needed more than that. When Dores needed her husband, where was he? Probably out doing the usual. Committing murder, bribery, robbery, money laundering, casino skimming, bootlegging, you name it. Piper was not so emotionally disturbed as her mother. She was more headstrong, and if she ever felt upset, she would sneak out at night and visit the closest beach. She wasn't supposed to go anywhere without the guards, but the beach was unlike anything. It was beautiful. So serene. Peaceful. When it was finally time for Piper to move out of the manor, she did it as soon as possible. She couldn't stay in her birth country after what happened. When Adriano passed, so did Dores. It had to be understood that when Adriano went away, Dores was completely broken. He was her whole life and everything revolved around him. When Dores found out about his demise, she took her own life, leaving Piper on her own. The trauma got to her quickly. Just before she had left to America, Piper went to visit her parents at the Prazeres Cemetery, usually where many famous Portugese citizens and government figures are buried. To this day, Piper will never forget the last words she spoke out loud to them. Piper was standing over both of their graves, head down, a tear about to stain the handwritten, scrunched up note in her hand. "Papai and Mãe, I know we did not have the kind of bond that most families have, nor the love to strengthen a relationship, but what I do know is that I have two diligent and loyal parents. Your efforts will not be in vain Papai. And now that I think about it, I never talked to you about what I wanted to be when I grow up. I used to want to be a ballerina. But as I grew older and gained more insight about what you do, I have realized that my true purpose in this world is to follow in your footsteps and continue the legacy you have left behind. I will show the world Papai, that I am not just 'Adriano's daughter', but a wild flower ready to bloom. Rest well, meus amores." |
