Trappings Of Death
Siobhan sits reading the newspaper, scanning through the obituaries and a question strikes her. Looking around, she stops one of the passers-by on the street, her paper still in her hand.
Pardon me, but I've a question about these funeral services ye have here in America. In Ireland, of course we have the Irish wake, which is both a happy occasion (celebrating the life of the decedant) and sad (for the loss of that life)
I've heard of strange burial customs throughout the world, but one that truly gives me the willies is that of the book of the dead: Taking photographs of the deceased and of the still living with the deceased. I, however, cannae for the life of me remember which nationality or religion does this. Would you happen to know? |

I read in one of my great (x3 or 4) grandmother's diary a woman she worked with in New York kissed the lips of the dead and pranced around the body. I can't remember her name, but she was ruthless. |

I'd like to clear up a little misconception. Not all Irish hold wakes, it's only a certain part of the community that like to display the body in a house and hold a party celebrating their life and mourning their lose.
Some of us, the smaller community that is tend to be more reserved about things hold the funeral and then have tea and crumpets after to mourn the dead.
Sorry to pick but being who I am and where I originally come from I hate seeing the Irish being labeled as just following one path. |

My family seems to think a death is the time to lament on how much of a terrible person they were and how it was a shame it ended the way it did.
Of course, thats for anyone other than the elders, who walk on water... |
