In the northern end of Central Park, Detective Irwin walks down the pathway while drinking from his flask and enjoying the morning air. A large sized envelope stands out from his overcoat pocket. Further down the path, a fountain appears from around the corner of the thick shrubbery and trees. As he approaches the public artwork, the detective sees MarkHanna standing perfectly still, observing the statues that are mounted on the sides and middle of the fountain. Detective Irwin walks up next to Mark and looks forward at the statues, "You know, my captain almost pinched me while I was trying to get this for you." Detective Irwin pulled the folded envelope from his pocket and handed it MarkHanna. "The Three Dancing Maidens," Mark said as he pointed his arm toward the statues. "Yea, real nice. You got some cash for me? This ain't part of our arrangement with the Cocaine drops." Mark took the envelope from the detective and tore it open. From inside the package, a scarf is removed to reveal a symbol on one of the ends. Mark puts the scarf back in the envelope and hands it back to Detective Irwin. "You said, 'get you the scarf and you give me some walking-around money." "Are you sure you got this from that shootout at the New York Harbor last night?" "Yes! This was in the evidence locker, along with a bunch of bullet casings and the clothes that belonged the deceased. This is the symbol you described to me!" Mark pulls a stack of hundreds from his inside coat pocket and hands it to the detective. The detective stands for a moment and flicks through the stack of money. "You can leave now," Mark says as stares at the statues in front of him. The detective tried to give the scarf back to Mark before it was rejected with a simple hand gesture. When Detective Irwin left, Mark's assistant Linda comes from under the dark tunnel on the north side of fountain. "My cousin is operating from Afghanistan again," Mark says. "So it was your cousin's bandits at the harbor. How do you know he's in Afghanistan?""The New York Police Department seized over 120 pounds of high grade heroin after they cleaned up the bodies. He should have contacted me," Mark says as he begins to walk down the path toward his car. Linda follows along. ----- Two days later, MarkHanna and Linda walk down the stairs from a plane. "Why did we have to fly all they way around the world?" Linda asks as he carries a small bag. "I've been put in a tight spot with police commissioner over my cousin's little event at the harbor. We flew to Afghanistan to sort this problem out." "If you can even find him, you think he'll listen?" Mark opens the door to the airport terminal saying, "I know where he is and if he doesn't listen to me, he'll have to answer to the bosses." The two walk through the airport to the parking lot and bus station. Mark rents a car for the day and drives to the market district in the Kabul city center. Mark's assistant parks the car and they both get out and walk around the market. Peddlers, beggars and merchants pepper the market scenery as the district traffic flows like the heart of a big organism. After some moments of browsing, Mark and his assistant walk up on a fabric merchant that is selling clothing with custom alterations in cotton and wool. Mark notices a sign on the roof of the market hut depicting the same symbol found on the scarf. Mark walks up to the merchant,"That's an interesting symbol. What does it mean?" The merchant scoffs and says,"I don't speak English." "Okay. I'll try this again. Where is Martin?" Mark says to the man with sinister growl in his voice. The merchant says nothing and looks away. A voice interrupts Mark's focused gaze, "Mark! Back to shaking down my employee are we?" Mark's cousin Martin walks up to Mark and pats him on the shoulder. "We need to talk. Is there somewhere we can go?" Mark replies. Martin walks with the two men to a medium sized tent. Inside the tent is a table with a bottle of 12 year old whiskey and some shot glasses. Mark and Martin sit down. "It's been a long time Mark. What brings you to this part of the desert heat?" Martin asked as he poured two shots. "New York is a place where things have to be done with a certain finesse," Mark says before he drinks from the glass, "Earlier this week, some heroin smugglers got into a shootout with the police and now they're breathing down my neck because 3 of their 'best guys' got clipped." Martin's face changed slightly, "I lost some good guys too you know." "All I'm saying is, you need a way to get your product in without the cops hassling ya; and I need things to be calm on that side of the island. I could talk to the bosses, they might be able to get something through to the commissioner so he'll get off my back and make sure no one bothers ya. But I need something to work with." Listening to Mark's offer, Martin sits and thinks for moment. "I'll give up 3% and I consider that big," Martin replies. Mark takes another shot and says, "15%. Small things seem big to small minds." "12% and that's as high as I'm going!" "Deal!" Mark replies as he raises his glass in toast. The two share a drink before Mark and Linda leave. |
