When the intermission was called, Sarah hurried to the edge of the gallery. She was beaming from ear to ear when Will got to her. "I tried, you know. Guess you just gave me too much luck. Maybe I could use some more. Want to take a walk on the deck?" "If it's with you, Will Byrne, I'll walk anywhere." Glancing behind her, she gave a sly grin to Raini, who was comfortably behind them. With a voice that was above a normal volume and below a yell, Sarah pointed at Will as she spoke to Raini with a careless grin. "I'm gonna walk out on the deck with him, and I'm going to kiss him- a lot." Undaunted, Raini rolled her eyes, but smiled. "So long as the two of you keep your clothes on." Grinning back at Will, Sarah took his hand and tugged him toward the door leading to the deck. |

"Might need some bonus pay for this one, Raini." Gavin materialized behind her, whisky in hand. Raini watched the two young people leave with an ironic grin. "He reminds me of-" "Don't say it. I know. Go follow them anyway. For all I know, they'll try to escape on a lifeboat... and if they wind up rocking the boat I have to explain this to Bella." Raini sighed, and Gavin chanted "bonus pay, bonus pay" as he watched them leave. Fifteen minutes later, the final ten were sitting at the table. It was a back and forth affair, with Gavin and Will both vacillating between winning and losing. But they both made it to the final six, the final four... and eventually, as the ship approached the harbor, the final three. They dispatched the young woman from Vegas, and the Byrnes were the final two remaining. Will had more chips at first, and Gavin's stack was bleeding... but over time, Gavin recovered- and eventually prevailed. Grinning, Gavin shook his son's hand. "I'm proud of you, son. You showed some real talent tonight. Not as much as me, of course, but you've still got some learning to do. And I hear the second place prize isn't too shabby either." The Byrnes accepted their winnings and soon everyone was exiting the ship to return to the shore. |

"That was so exciting!" Sarah was nearly twirling along beside Will as they moved down the dock toward the waiting car. A mix of excitement and several glasses of champagne had taken a slight effect on the young woman; but not so much so that she forgot to conduct herself like a lady. Mostly, she held Will's arm and giggled. "You both were magnificent! I've never seen anything like it. Oh, you two would have had a ball playing my father. I'm not sure even he could have beaten you!" As they climbed into the car, Sarah looked back across the dock to the ship they'd just disembarked. "I want to do that again some time- go on a ship like that. But for longer, to some place I've never seen." Of course, financially Sarah could do anything she wanted. The thought had already crossed her mind, but was suddenly interrupted by another, more worrying thought. What was she supposed to do now? She quieted down as they rode to the hotel, keeping her hand in Will's but seemingly lost in thought. |

Gavin grinned, resisting the urge to tell stories of some of his vacations. Better to save some of those details for later. "We'll be at the hotel tonight, of course. Sarah, have you considered your next move? Perhaps it would be wise to spend some time in Philadelphia? While Burke is dealt with, there may be other elements here in New York who'd try to take advantage of you. For a modest fee, we can provide you some security in Philadelphia while you plan your next step. I know you mentioned a business, back when we met on the pier. Perhaps that's something we could discuss?" As Gavin was speaking, Will traced his finger lightly on Sarah's forearm. |

Will's finger playing up her arm slowly drew her out of those thoughts, just in time to hear Gavin bringing up the same subject. She'd almost forgotten the conversation they'd had the afternoon Sarah had come to Gavin for help. Still, for a girl that could see anything in the world, all she could think about was already sitting right beside her. "I want to come back to Philadelphia." She blurted it out rather hastily, but never more sure of anything in her life. Not wanting to sound too terribly impulsive, she added. "New York was my home, but there's nothing left for me here. I don't think I could trust anyone, after what happened. I'm ready...to move on. To find my own way, and make my Dad proud." Smiling softly, she returned her gaze to Will, then nestled herself against his chest for the remainder of the ride back to the hotel. |
