Ryan has been known to, on occasion, wander down to the spot where popular opinion is voiced. Normally he just watches and listens quietly to what is being said and more often than not is left less than motivated to contribute himself. Perhaps his own special brand of apathy is the reason he still languishes as an ancient Wise Guy in a world of Made Men and Capos. On very special and rare occasions like today he does like to share his thoughts with the masses. Ryan sees this act of selfless sharing as a treat for people. People who he assumes probably lead extraordinarily tedious loves in comparison to his. The stench of cider aerating from his mouth chokes the poor bastards nearest to his "podium". The sight is a surreal one. A tragic alcoholic perched upon an empty keg of beer about to give a speech. The emptiness of the vessel saddens him for a moment and he contemplates this in silence before beginning his rant... "I am sick to my stomach and it is not from alcohol poisoning this time. What ails me today is a worrying trend that seems to be crawling its way into our wonderful way of life. It is like a slimy little maggot wriggling its way to the forefront, defiling all in its wake. I am referring to the people I like to label under the following moniker; "Depressive Reprobates". You must know the type and I defy any one of you to claim otherwise. There is always at least one person in every circle of associates who likes to do nothing more than burden their woes on anyone who they can trap near them for more than two minutes. In a way it is a form of emotional cancer spread exclusively by these undesirables. The cancer is normally spread in the following manner:
If my message has been too subtle thus far I shall simplify it nicely now. There is a decidedly distasteful (alliteration baby) element consisting of people blatantly pretending to be in bad shape mentally to garner sympathy and favours from their peers. I am not prepared to even justify why I have decided this trend is unacceptable. Frankly I should not have to and if you happen to be sitting confused right now there is a whole bunch of freshly cleaned windows down the street that you can go and lick. Delicious. To conclude, if you have genuine feelings of deep despondency (two in a row!) then bottle them up tightly. If you really must get things off your chest find a parent or an extremely close friend to chat with; do not tell every passer by. I am going off on a tangent however, the people who have turned my stomach so are the ones who use contrived tales of anguish. May I kindly request that you stop preying on the weak minded with your tragic lies? Your vain attempt to get ahead in life using such an obscene stratagem is an affront to me. That is all." Ryan chuckles inwardly while maintaining his cold expression of contempt for all present. The look of sheer shock and disgust on some of the faces almost making him lose composure completely. 'What a wonderful afternoon's work' he decides to himself as he relaxes back against the wall. |

At some point in all our lives we are going to feel a little down. Thats one of the beauties of life, one minute we are on top of the world, the next minute we are in the gutter. While it can be hard to pull ourselves out of the gutter using how you feeling to gain yourselves some nice shiny gift from someone will not help you. While it might make you feel better for a while you will end up feeling low again. The best thing for people to do is talk things through with true friends, not try to use their depression to gain things like bodyguards or the like. It's a vicious circle like being addicted to nicotine. You get the crave, you have a smoke. Sometime later on the craving comes back and you have another smoke. Unless you actually try to do something to help yourself then your always gonna feel the same. To use feeling bad to get things well, let me ask you this if someone feels so crap about themselves they can't go on what right do they have getting things like Italics, Auth or bodyguards. |

While listening to RyanDelaney's speech Jordan smiled slightly from the bluntness of his words. It was rare to hear such honesty. Interesting topic, Mr Delaney. I hope people keeping track of other people's business give you a good mark for originality. I've been in a few public places around here and over heard people talking about personal problems. It always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, almost embarrassed for the person because I can't imagine blurting out personal things in a room full of people. I've always been suspicious of people who make a big production of their problems, make them well known for everyone to hear about. I assume they are either looking for a lot of sympathy or as you pointed out, they want things to make them feel better. The problems might be made up, big lies that are part of a con job. Sad stories are probably more profitable than con artist civilians asking twenty random people for 50k to buy drugs. If the problems are real giving anything more than advice is only enabling people to continue using their problems as a crutch and they will never get over them. |

Cathy Parks flips up the collar of her trench coat as she steps out of the coffee shop and into the Streets. Around the block she hears one of her employees Ryan Delaney speaking and so goes over to listen. When there's a lull in the conversation she steps forwards to speak. "To me, I really don't know what's worse, the person who is clearly abusing the good will of others or the mook that allows it to happen. "Obviously when you step into a bold suit, there is an incredible amount of pressure to get a handle on the situation. You must have made your choice for a right-hand man and even a left - depending on how you structure your organisation. From there it is really a race against time to build up the Head Quarters and to arrange the structure. Because of the pressure, I can understand how it is easy to make a mistake in the positions that are given out. We are really looking at a 2 week period to make sure the Family is up and running in some sort of order. Any longer and it becomes very difficult to make changes to what is already established. "However, even under pressure we leaders should not be so quick to hand out positions like we were dealing cards. Or if we do, we should be strong enough to remedy the mistake with prompt and assertive action. Most of these so-called "mistakes" tend to happen when we give out positions to friends or to those who try and box us into a corner whilst we are trying to fill in the obvious gaps. The truth of the matter every time is that it is only those who show the most promise and capability that will excel in a position of authority within the Structure of a family. "Some of us are lucky to have friends who also possess strong business-related qualities. But in the majority of cases we need to be looking to those who we may not know as well but who are clearly working for the family and not for themselves. Someone who uses their personal problems to manipulate others into obtaining status, positions or special favour are not working with the Family in mind. They are looking for personal glory, a quick-fix to make themselves feel better. "I for one would not even tolerate it even for a fucking second. Does that make me unfeeling and cold-hearted? Absolutely. But I did not become the Leader of Philadelphia to make friends. I did not become the Leader of Philadelphia to win a popularity contest. I did not become the the Leader of Philadelphia so I could molly-coddle or cow tow to the rest of the community. I am first and foremost a business woman. If your work is sub-par you're not good for business. If your trying to manipulate me to get auth, to get positions, to get special favour then you need to vacate my city as soon as possible - it's in the best interests of your safety. "I reward those who earn it. I give the positions to the people who deserve it. Undoubtedly, I still have a long way to go before I fully utilise the potential that my Family has, but that doesn't mean I am not looking for those who could fit into my future plans. If you're not prepared to work for it, then we're not going to make a good business partnership and I really don't want you taking up the space in my building that could be filled by someone ten times better." |

It is the nature of our world that there are a lot of people around with problems, real, serious, life and death problems. I would be hard pressed to think of a "normal" balanced person who would dedicate 12, 14, 16 hours a day to crime. Many have medical issues, serious diseases which prevent them getting out and leading a more constructive life. There's a LOT of mental illness walking these streets, depression, anxiety, some mild schizophrenia, borderline personalities and a whole host of others, no doubt - diagnosed and undiagnosed. It is the nature of human beings that we share our troubles, some more freely than others. There are some who frequent the coffee shops who know my personal issues, there are many who don't. Among the times I have spoken freely about that which troubles me, not once has it been from a "I am unwell, therefore you must do nice things to make me feel better" standpoint. I have had several conversations with others about their illnesses, their problems, and again, it's never come across to me that they were trying to engender sympathy, or get something from me as a result - merely that we've been talking about something which is a large part of their day-to-day lives. Should someone actually be doing this, then that is coldly cynical and more than a little sad... but I just can't see it happening. I can't see someone that has a serious condition, that keeps them awake nights in fear that should they fall asleep they won't wake up, using that condition to get ahead in this life. Perhaps I still have some last grains of hope for humanity, but I just can't see anyone sinking that low. |
