Adventures at Boss Hog's Started by: Nikolai on May 23, '19 16:38

Just across the county line and tucked back behind trees that kept the building obscured during daylight hours nestled the one and only Boss Hog's.  Boss Hog's had been established back in 1915 when Isaac Hogland had decided to convert his barn into a drinking establishment for his buddies.  After several long weekend and many hang overs, a subfloor had been constructed, the large doors of the barn sealed up with only standard sized doors proving access, and a bar constructed off in one of the corners.

Over the next two years, the reputation had grown to the point where large crowds of locals would show up every Friday and Saturday night to hang out, drink, and witness a fist fight between two of the young "bucks" that felt their need to prove their worth.  But due to the large number of people, the event became more and more daunting on Ole Hogland to manage, spending a good portion of his week cleaning up and repairing the damage done by the rowdy crowd.  Finally, on a summer evening in August of 1917, events would change everything.

As Ole Hogland sat up on his raised platform, rocking in his chair, taking drags on his cigar.  As two of the men began to pull off their shirts in preparation for a fight to settle who would get to date one of the ladies in town, it became obvious that something was brewing in the crowd.  As Isaac watched, he studied faces and saw that it appeared the crowd was divided into two distinct groups, one from the local town and one from a town on the other side of the county line.  As the fight started, within seconds, others engaged and a brawl ensued.  Isaac screamed at the top of his lungs for them to stop, but to no avail.  Glancing around, his buddies were completely out numbers and inadequately prepared for this situation.

With a crash, a chair was thrown and when it missed the man standing by the bar, it trashed into the shelves on the back side, toppling glassware to the ground along with a few bottles of booze that Isaac kept in his private stock.  Enraged, Isaac stood and glared down and the main two fighters, currently squared off and trading blows.  Striding to the corner of his platform, he reached behind a support column and pulled out his shotgun.  Walking to the edge of the platform, he looked up and aimed at a section of the ceiling directly about the two targeted fighters.  A loud "BANG" caught everyone's attention and everyone remained completely still as they watched Isaac as he kept his aim on the two fighter's.  Silence remained for several seconds until Isaac finally spoke, "Listen here you two son'bitches.  This is my bar and my land and you're trespassing.  That means I can kill you and the law says that's legal in this county.   Do you understand me?"  The two men, never taking their eyes off Isaac, nodded their understanding before the one from the local town said "Mr. Hogland, this guy has been talking bad about me and the...."  Before he could finish his statement, Isaac barked out "Can it you sniveling piece of shit!  Do you think I care?  This is a place for everyone to come have a few drinks and blow off some steam.  But bringing your cry baby drama here isn't going to cut it.  We are men, not sniveling little babies.  I should shoot you right now and save your momma the grief of knowing she raised a pansy!"

The room remained silent for several seconds as Isaac let his words sink in.  Then, he slowly raised his shotgun and there was an audible sound of individuals finally letting out a breath of air in relief.  Isaac, scanning the crowd, said "Don't bring your problems here.  This is my land.  And I will shoot you for trespassing if you cause me any problems.  I've been good enough to provide you a fine place to come and blow off steam, so don't shit on the hand that feeds you.  But moving forward, we are going to make some changes."  Turning his gaze on the two fighters that started this brawl, Isaac said "You two are in my debt.  Not only did cause damage to my bar, but you forced me to shoot a god damn hole in my own roof.  Both of you will work it off.  You understand me?"  The two men, looked first at each other, then back to Isaac.  Then the man from the local town said "Yes sir".  Isaac glared at the man through squinted eyes as he took a puff on his cigar, then said "Don't you call me sir.  I worked hard to earn this farm.  You will call me the boss.  Make it Boss Hog!"

Ten months later, June of 1918, Boss Hog, along with two familiar faces stood at the edge of the road and watched as a sign was being lifted into place using a rope and pulley system.  The sign showed the graphic of a pig smoking a cigar on one side and the other side said "Boss Hog's".  Boss Hog looked at the two men, which had put their differences to the side as they were forced to work diligently after work and on weekends to make repairs from the brawl.  Then, over time, Boss Hog had convinced them to accept employment with the bar, working in tandem, with one watching over security and the other focused on maintaining the stocked bar.  After the fight had happened, Boss Hog had shut down the bar for several weeks while he worked out the details of converting the barn to an actual business.  Shortly there after, just before Thanksgiving of 1917, they had reopened, offering cold drinks and now periodically had local musicians spend the evening providing tunes for tips.
