The Present Day
The sun shown through the windows of the kitchen as Katana slowly lifted her head up. Blinking a few times she squinted as she looked at the clock. Her eyes were on fire from crying most the night, but she didn't think twice about it as she felt the gun still in her hand. Looking at the gun her face grew cold and she rose from the chair she had passed out in. A half glass of wine still set in front of her and there were pictures of her and David thrown about the table. She held onto one most the night of the two smiling as they were at a party a month before. She sighed as her fingers traced his face in the timeless photo.
"I will save you.." Katana picked up he glass of wine and threw it at the sink watching the glass disintegrate as it hit the wall above the sink and wine splatter the area. She didn't even think about cleaning it up as she walked past the living room towards the bedroom. Slowly she stepped to her drawer holding back her tears again as she pulled out her outfit of the day. Nothing was even pretty about it just plain jeans and black sweater and she grabbed her older shoes. "Comfy." The words lingered on her tongue as she slipped out of her skirt and slid her jeans on. She found a hair clip and pulled her hair back clipping it in place. After dressing she glanced back at the clock and sighed. "Two more hours. This waiting is going to kill me." She didn't know what had already become of him, and suddenly dropped her shoes to the floor she held at the thought of getting there to him already being dead. She knelt down and grabbed her shoes and slid them on.
Walking over to where he slept every night, she let her fingers slide across his pillow and then she laid her picture that sat beside the bed face down. Sliding open the dresser draw she slid out his gun and clutched it in her hand. Then walked back through the house to the kitchen and grabbed her gun off the table that had a bit of wine from the night before splattered on the barrel. She turned and walked out the door not knowing if she would ever be back.
"Damn car." She finally got the door open and plopped down in the drivers seat. She briefly just stared at the front door halfway expecting to see David open it and wave her bye, but she knew that wasn't going to happen. "Would it ever again?"
Katana started the engine and reversed out the driveway. Putting it in gear she glanced at the house one more time. "You were suppose to be my home damn it." She pressed heavy on the gas pedal as she sped down the street. Looking at houses she flew by she watched as some opened presents and some were having what seemed to be Christmas lunch with all those they loved. She screamed realizing she couldn't do that today, and then glanced again at the clock as she turned towards the city.
Reaching the docks she slowed her car as she watched the vacancy of the place. Nothing there. No birds no sounds no nothing. Katana then turned off the engine as she sat back in the seat hoping to catch a glimpse of something rather then the nothingness that surrounded her. A tap on her window startled her as she was met face to face with the barrel of a gun pointed at her. She slowly opened the door as the man motioned for her to and stepped out. She was careful not to turn her back to him in case he would see David's gun in the back of her pants.
"I know you have a gun give it to me." The man took a step closer to her unwavering with his gun pressed to her head as she slowly handed him the gun that was in her belt. "There we go. Good girl." She watched him not saying a word in response. "Follow me I believe we have someone your wanting to see."
The ground crunched under her feet from the rocks she stepped on as they walked towards the small abandoned warehouse. The man pulled the door open and held his hand out to show Katana the entrance. The rotten smell of the place hit her nostrils as soon as she took a step in and realized the place smelt of nothing but death and decay. She shook the thought of picturing David there dead as she was met suddenly with a bright light that filled the room.
"DAVID!" Katana screamed as she saw David's near lifeless body tied to a chair. She could tell he was breathing and then she saw him look up at her. His blood smeared his face, and his hair was matted from where it looked he had been hit from behind. Katana rose her hand to her mouth as she started to run to him and was met with a hand firmly on her arm.
"You go nowhere Katana." Michael held her arm tightly in his grasp as she reached for him with her other hand and smacked him. She tried to get away and failed miserably as she turned back and saw a man standing where David was at in his hand was what appeared to be a bat and he glanced her way as she watched him raise it in the air.
The sound of the bat on David's body was sickening as Katana nearly fell over. Hearing Michael's laughter she thought for a moment of anything she could use. She couldn't reach her gun but there had to be something she could say to distract him to cause his rage to be directed towards her instead.
"Michael I remember that night.." She spoke softly choking back her tears. "I saw her standing in front of your house a few grocery bags in her hand as she rang your doorbell. I didn't want to pull the trigger but I had my orders. Our boss wanted her out of the way said she was a snitch." Katana turned and faced Michael as he stood cold and silent his arm digging into her skin as she continued to speak. "I remember I swallowed hard as I pulled the trigger. Hear the sound of the bullet leaving the chamber sliding down the barrel exiting the tip of the gun then watched as that women collapsed right as you opened the door. I watched as you tried to catch her already lifeless body, and I saw you stare right at me."
Michaels hand suddenly met Katana's face as she stopped speaking. Free from his grasp she stepped back and pulled her gun. Quickly she shot the man that was immediatly in front of David. Then she turned her gun to Michael who already had his out and pointed right at David.
"You really think you can kill me Katana?" Michael walked over to David and released his ties as he picked him up. David's body was heavy and nearly limp but Michael made use of him as a shield. Katana's hand froze as she knew she wasn't familiar enough with this gun to be able to just hit Michael, but she stood in horror as she watched Michael press the gun against David's head. "Your move Katana. I will kill both of you in one shot and you know that." She heard the click of him drawing the cock of the gun back.
"Fuck.." She pulled the trigger as she heard her shot fire and everything went dark at the sound of a second shot which she knew was going to be the fatal blow to her heart. Finally regaining her vision she stared horrified at the scene unfolding before her. "NO!!!" Katana screamed out as she watched David fall to the ground and tried to simply reach for him. Then she stopped feeling a pain in her stomach and looked down. She saw the blood trickle down her sweater and drip to the floor as she pulled her hand up and touched her wound. Staring at her hand covered in blood, for a moment she looked back up she saw David laying on the floor still breathing badly beaten but no blood oozing from his body. Looking to the left she saw Michael laying in a pool of blood his head nearly blown apart from the bullet that pierced him straight between the eyes.
"I did it." Katana said as she stumbled a few steps and then fell to her knees. Her pants were drenched with the red that looked as if she spilt her wine in her lap as she softly whispered to David hoping he would hear. "I love you." |
